Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict on three federal gun charges Tuesday punctuated — but did not end — what has been a long and difficult saga. Instead, the president offered his family a warm smile, hugged Hunter Biden’s young son, Beau, and gave him a kiss on the forehead. Never before has a president’s immediate family member been found guilty of a crime during their father’s term in office. Instead of pushing him away, as some wary Democrats might prefer, the president has held Hunter Biden close throughout his ordeal. Farther out of town is the home on a lake the Biden family has returned to in moments of joy and times of pain.

Buhle, who was ordered to testify under a subpoena, told the court that she learned of Hunter Biden’s drug use in 2015. Hallie Biden, who was dating Hunter Biden at the time he bought the gun, was another key witness for the prosecution. Hallie Biden took the gun Hunter Biden is accused of illegally possessing out of his car and tossed it in a dumpster near a Wilmington, Delaware, grocery store. If Hallie Biden was the prosecution’s star witness, the defense hoped that Naomi Biden, Hunter Biden’s daughter, would help blunt the impact of her testimony. President Biden wasn’t in the courtroom, but made clear where he stood as the trial began.

The next rate decision from the Federal Reserve coupled with May inflation data, both on Wednesday, will play key roles in how stocks perform next week — quite probably lending added volatility to an already jittery market. The Fed's rate decision All eyes are on the Fed next week and its rate decision that's set to come down at 2 p.m. Wednesday. But investors have tempered expectations since then amid a spate of stubborn inflation data. That makes May's consumer price index report due out before the bell Wednesday another key focal point for investors. Economists polled by Dow Jones are bracing for the consumer price index to rise 3.4% year over year and 0.1% on a monthly basis.

"They know how to put on a tight gun case." Biden's trial is not necessarily a lost cause. This arrangement has perversely allowed Weiss to politicize the proceedings unchecked, Hunter Biden's lawyers argued. There's no evidence that Biden even loaded or used the gun before his brother's widow, Hallie Biden, threw it out. "Obviously, the conduct that the government ought to be addressing is whether somebody is on drugs and high while they're shooting a gun," Levin said.

forward — rose in a Delaware courtroom to declare that the Justice Department’s sweeping immunity deal with Hunter Biden was not nearly as sweeping as the defense believed. His transfer coincided with efforts by congressional Republicans to portray Mr. Weiss — a Trump appointee held over by President Biden’s aides — as offering “a sweetheart deal” to the Bidens. In early 2023, he published a memoir covering the police trial, describing himself as “the prosecutor who took down Baltimore’s most crooked cops.”Mr. But he was passed over because it was believed he might clash with prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, they said. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to charges of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while abusing or being addicted to drugs, a violation of federal law. Another question probed whether potential jurors or their close associates had ever sought treatment for drug use. During their, at times, emotional answers, prospective juror after juror described how drug use had afflicted people they knew. About 42% of adults in the United States say they personally know at least one person who died from a drug overdose, according to survey findings published earlier this year by the nonprofit research institute RAND Corporation. In addition to illuminating the sheer number of Americans impacted by addiction, Hunter Biden’s trial is also creating critical awareness around the very language used to describe drug use.

Four days after presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump was convicted on 34 counts in his hush money trial in New York, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter will be called to answer for federal gun charges in Wilmington, Delaware. But a CBS/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that Americans believe 57% to 43% that the Manhattan jury reached the right verdict. His inflammatory remarks did not reflect the fact that his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and his demagoguery are far more reflective of developing-world banana republics than a fair jury trial. Hunter Biden is entitled to the same presumption of innocence and a trial by a jury of his peers that Trump was. “I’d rather be on President Biden’s side of that contrast than on the extreme MAGA Republican side,” he said.

Opinion | Hunter Biden Should Take a Plea Deal. Quickly.
  + stars: | 2024-06-02 | by ( Sarah Isgur | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on three felony gun charges in a trial that is set to begin in Wilmington, Del., on Monday. In the meantime, his father is behind in many polls, his financial benefactor is reportedly “tapped out” and his best legal arguments require gutting federal gun control laws. An early plea agreement — in which he agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enter into a deferred prosecution agreement on the gun charges — fell apart last summer. But a criminal defendant can accept a plea deal from the prosecution anytime before the jury returns its verdict, which means that he might still have a chance to avoid a full trial. In practice, this means that once the Department of Justice has indicted you, they believe they will win.

Hunter Biden will go on trial on gun charges on Monday in Delaware within walking distance of his father’s campaign headquarters in Wilmington, less than a week after former President Donald J. Trump’s felony conviction in New York. But a plea deal, which offered him some immunity from prosecution and did not include prison time, imploded in July. Still, it is the son — not the father — who will be on trial twice during an election year. On Monday, he is set to report to the fourth-floor courtroom of Judge Maryellen Noreika when jury selection begins at 9 a.m. in a trial expected to last three to five days. The other, set to begin in September, involves a series of tax offenses related to his failure to file returns for a number of years.

More than a million borrowers who were defrauded by for-profit schools have had billions of dollars in federal student loans eliminated through a government aid program. But people with private loans have generally been excluded from any relief — until recently. Navient, a large owner of private student loan debt, has created, but not publicized, a program that allows borrowers to apply to have their loans forgiven. Navient, based in Wilmington, Del., has not publicized the discharge program that helped Ms. Maynard. When asked about the program and the criticisms, a company spokesman said, “Borrowers may contact us at any time, and our advocates can assist.”

The Delaware College of Art and Design is set to close, the institution announced on May 23, citing low enrollment numbers for the upcoming school year, due in part to issues with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Experts have continuously warned that ongoing problems with the new FAFSA form have resulted in fewer students applying for financial aid, which could contribute to already declining enrollment. That page was not accessible Wednesday, but can still be viewed through the Internet Archive. Enrollment at DCAD fell to 129 students, a loss of nearly 10%, between 2017 and 2022, according to federal data. "The Board of Trustees has worked diligently to find other funding solutions, but none allow us to overcome the longer-term problem of too few students," Dahlgren added.
