Entain (ENT.L), owner of Ladbrokes and Coral brands, said it saw "exponential growth" in betting on the sport and a record number of women globally placing bets. The first three England games saw one-fifth of bets placed by women, it said. Betting on the co-host and semi-finalist Australia saw a 200% increase, fuelled by the Matildas strong run. Soccer leads the way in terms of the number of people betting and placing bets, and the number of women betting on women's soccer has doubled annually, the study said. Entain did not immediately disclose the number of bets placed on the World Cup.

Detail of the portrait of W.H. Hudson by Frank Brooks that hangs above the fireplace at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds headquarters in Sandy, England. A beanpole of a man, decked out in tweeds, waistcoat and laced boots, looking more British than the British, he kept himself cool by carrying a moist handkerchief inside his hat. Some believed that Hudson, sharp-eyed and constantly on the move, was like a wild bird himself—a hawk, perhaps, or an eagle. His laugh sounded like that of the green woodpecker, reports Conor Mark Jameson in his new biography, adding that he could no longer listen to that bird without thinking of Hudson.

But further scrutiny revealed distinctive features: legs slightly longer than those of most domestic cats, and a striking black-tipped tail. I explored this question in my book "The Cat's Meow: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa." But tomb paintings and sculptures show that by 3,500 years ago, domestic cats lived in Egypt. Or you can measure the length of its intestines – longer in domestic cats to digest vegetable-based food provided by or scavenged from humans. William H. Dilday Jr., a Boston TV executive who moved to Jackson, Miss., in 1972 to manage the city’s NBC affiliate, becoming the country’s first Black person to run a commercial television station, died on July 27 in Newton, Mass. His daughter Kenya Dilday said that he died at a hospital from complications after a fall. The inquiry came after eight years of litigation by the United Church of Christ and a group of Black citizens against the station, which was owned by a local insurance company. Like many TV stations in the Jim Crow-era South, WLBT had given scant coverage to the civil rights movement, or to the lives and concerns of Black Mississippians in general. It refused to use courtesy titles when interviewing Black people, and once cut off a segment with Thurgood Marshall, replacing it with a sign reading, “Sorry — Cable Trouble.”

Read Your Way Through Maine
  + stars: | 2023-07-26 | by ( Lily King | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Maine is where you send a character you want to get rid of, someone who goes off to raise goats, farm oysters, prep for the apocalypse — or write a novel. I was in my mid-20s, waitressing on an island off the coast of Rockland, Maine, when the actor William Hurt — ultrafamous, at the height of his career — sat down in my section. Our shoreline is vast, over 3,000 miles of it, with hundreds of peninsulas and more than 4,000 islands. But Maine is not all coast.

In the case (of a serial killer who) is a psychopath, their brain functions differently than a normal human brain. Are all serial killers serial sexual murderers?

July 21 (Reuters) - Alabama executed a man early on Friday for beating an elderly woman to death two decades ago, the state's first execution since Governor Kay Ivey lifted a suspension on capital punishment in February following a review. Barber argued to the United States Court of Appeals that his execution should be halted because he is at substantial risk of serious harm and "torture" under current protocols. Legal and ethical questions have swirled around capital punishment in the United States after several lethal injections have been botched in recent years. The number of executions in the United States has drastically fallen since 1999, when a record 98 executions were carried out. Capital punishment was reinstated in the United States in 1976.

Bank of America made at least $80 million by repeatedly charging customers a $35 fee, the CFPB said. The bank would sometimes push the fee multiple times on the same transaction, per the CFPB. "Over a period of multiple years, Bank of America generated substantial additional revenue by illegally charging multiple $35 fees." The regulator ordered the bank to refund customers $80.4 million, and to pay a $120 million total fine. In May 2022, the bank was also made to pay $10 million in civil penalties for unlawfully garnishing its customers' wages.

Bank of America was issuing credit cards to people without their consent for years, the CFPB said. The CFPB did not say how many current and former bank staffers were accused of submitting false credit card applications. "Bank of America wrongfully withheld credit card rewards, double-dipped on fees, and opened accounts without consent," said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra in the statement. The bank was also ordered to pay $727 million in 2014 for misleading consumers in marketing for its credit card add-ons. In 2016, Wells Fargo was similarly fined $185 million for secretly issuing credit cards to customers without them knowing.

July 7 (Reuters) - Warm and cuddly are adjectives that seldom spring to mind when one thinks of rattlesnakes. The findings challenge the notion that reptiles are solitary hunters that display little in the way of complex social behavior. Ethology, the study of animal behavior, has long recognized that birds and mammals, including humans, find comfort from being physically close to their own kind. To measure stress levels in the snakes, Martin used a heart-rate monitor designed for humans. "It lets us know as humans that, hey, we're not that different from these snakes," Martin said.
