An 11-month-old baby died after being accidentally shot in the head by a toddler inside a parked car in San Antonio on Monday, police said. A federal judge on Friday blocked Virginia from purging its voter rolls of alleged noncitizens and ordered the state to reinstate more than 1,600 people who had already been bounced from those lists. Judge Patricia Giles in her ruling agreed with arguments by the U.S. Department of Justice, which said that the purge ordered by Gov. Federal law bars states from systematically removing people from voter rolls within 90 days of an election. The DOJ said in a court filing that 43 people in Prince William County who had been removed from voter rolls were likely U.S. citizens, and lawyers earlier this week confirmed that 18 American citizens were removed from voter rolls. Giles said it was "not happenstance" that Youngkin had issued his executive order to purge the voter rolls exactly 90 days before Election Day.

Doctors have long urged people ages 50 and older to get a yearly shot to protect against pneumonia. On Wednesday, an independent group of advisers to the CDC voted 14 to 1 to lower the age for routine pneumococcal vaccines to 50. “The peak in serious invasive pneumococcal infections occurs earlier in the Black population” at about 55 to 60, he said. According to the CDC, 1 in 6 older adults who get either pneumococcal bloodstream infections or pneumococcal meningitis will die from the disease. A quarter-million hospitalizations from pneumococcal pneumonia are estimated to occur every year in the United States, according to the CDC.

LOS ANGELES — Dueling lawsuits against UCLA each describe a rise in antisemitic and anti-Palestinian bias since protests erupted on campus last year over the Israel-Hamas war. “UCLA has failed to provide Jewish students, faculty, and staff with the protection promised by such policies," the amended complaint says. Both complaints refer to task forces UCLA established to examine antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. The antisemitism report was released this month, and the one on anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim bias came out in May. Some pro-Israel students and faculty members said they did not feel safe walking to classes, and pro-Palestinian protesters said they were increasingly subjected to violence and suppression.

☆ British nurse Lucy Letby loses bid to appeal single attempted murder conviction

Former British nurse and convicted child serial killer Lucy Letby on Thursday lost an attempt to appeal against her conviction for trying to murder a newborn baby, amid questions over the fairness of her trials. Judge William Davis refused Letby’s application for leave to appeal against the conviction from her retrial. Letby attended the hearing by videolink from prison and sat impassively as the judge stated the court’s reasons for refusing her application. She can now only challenge those convictions if the Criminal Cases Review Commission refer those cases back to the Court of Appeal. Since her trials, Letby’s conviction has come under a spotlight, following criticism by some experts of medical and statistical evidence presented by the prosecution.

London CNN —Britain’s government and King Charles III are bracing for a heated conversation about reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, as the issue looks set to overshadow a summit of Commonwealth leaders in Samoa. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters on his journey to the Pacific island nation: “I think we should be facing forward. Successive British governments have resisted calls to formally apologize for the slave trade, or to entertain the prospect of reparations. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, at a state banquet opening the summit on Thursday.
