Amember of staff hands flyers with picture of Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba before his election campaign speech in Tokyo on October 26, 2024. Voters delivered a "harsh judgement" to the LDP, in the words of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Following that result, parties have 30 days to try to form a coalition government and pick a prime minister. It's still unclear what the exact makeup of a coalition government could look like, clouding the outlook for both economic policy and Ishiba's fate. Thong predicted there will be no significant changes to the country's defense policy, although he pointed out that "a major increase in [defense] exports may be challenging."

Washington had pressed its ally in the hopes of ending the cycle of attacks and avoiding escalation into a wider war. Blinken said the U.S. is tracking the aid deliveries very carefully and “absolutely essential” that Israel comply. "Israel has achieved most of its strategic objectives when it comes to Gaza,” Blinken said in Tel Aviv. (It also signed off on $9.5 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza, as well as the conflict zones of Ukraine and Sudan.) But far-fetched as it might seem, it came up during Blinken’s meeting with the Saudi crown prince during this trip.

CNN —It’s been more than six years since Irvine, California, banned short-term rentals — and the city’s mayor hasn’t looked back. “I certainly don’t think it’s a major driver of the housing affordability crisis,” Nieuwerburgh said. “The reality is that there just simply aren’t enough short-term rentals out there to really make a difference,” Yedinsky said. CNN —Prince William has opened up about how a powerful childhood experience with his brother and late mother helped shape his work in combatting homelessness. In the Prince of Wales’ forthcoming documentary, “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness,” the 42-year-old heir to the British throne recalls visiting The Passage, a British charity for the homeless, alongside his late mother, Diana. “My mother took me to The Passage; she took Harry and I both there,” William says in a newly released clip from the two-part documentary. The series, directed by BAFTA winner Leo Burley, features stories of those currently facing homelessness or who have experienced it. Speaking at an awards ceremony for the Centrepoint homelessness charity earlier this month, the prince said homelessness is”a complex societal issue” but that he “passionately” believes it can be eradicated.

A NASA astronaut was flown to a hospital with an unspecified medical issue on Friday shortly after returning to Earth from a nearly eight-month mission on the International Space Station, the space agency said. The astronaut, who NASA did not name for privacy reasons, had splashed down off Florida’s coast at 3:29 a.m. ET on Friday aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule with three other crew members — two NASA astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut. Their 235 days in space made it longer than the usual six-month ISS mission duration and marked the longest stay in orbit for SpaceX’s reusable Crew Dragon spacecraft. The Elon Musk-owned company remains the only U.S. option for NASA astronaut trips to and from the ISS.

A federal judge on Friday granted a Department of Justice request to block Virginia from systematically removing alleged noncitizens from the voter rolls this close to an election. "All of the eligible voters who were wrongfully purged from the voter rolls will now be able to cast their ballots," Snow said. The Justice Department said in a previous filing that 43 people removed from rolls in Prince William County were likely U.S. citizens. States are barred from systematically removing people from voters rolls within 90 days of an election under the National Voter Registration Act. A lawyer for the state of Virginia, Charles Cooper, defended the program in court Thursday, arguing, “There are going to be hundreds of noncitizens back on these rolls.

For the vast majority of Americans, it’s pretty smooth.”Across the country, election officials are also vowing voters will be able to safely cast their ballots. This year’s crop of election observers is set to include people who have denied Trump’s 2020 election loss. Hilby stressed that it’s often important for poll watchers to understand what they’re seeing. “The best way to combat it is to just be as transparent as possible, and election officials really are committed to doing that.

New York CNN —Over the past three years, Elon Musk has met dozens of times with presidents, prime ministers, lawmakers, government officials and political candidates from around the world. Other meetings, such as a recent conversation with Argentine President Javier Milei, the world only glimpses through the billionaire’s social media posts. Recently, Musk’s political activism has begun to have a tangible impact on his companies: Brands pulled their advertisements from X, tanking its value. CNN’s analysis also suggests that Musk has, in particular, worked to develop influence among a set of right-leaning world leaders, including Modi, Bolsonaro, Milei and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. A federal judge on Friday blocked Virginia from purging its voter rolls of alleged noncitizens and ordered the state to reinstate more than 1,600 people who had already been bounced from those lists. Judge Patricia Giles in her ruling agreed with arguments by the U.S. Department of Justice, which said that the purge ordered by Gov. Federal law bars states from systematically removing people from voter rolls within 90 days of an election. The DOJ said in a court filing that 43 people in Prince William County who had been removed from voter rolls were likely U.S. citizens, and lawyers earlier this week confirmed that 18 American citizens were removed from voter rolls. Giles said it was "not happenstance" that Youngkin had issued his executive order to purge the voter rolls exactly 90 days before Election Day.

Doctors have long urged people ages 50 and older to get a yearly shot to protect against pneumonia. On Wednesday, an independent group of advisers to the CDC voted 14 to 1 to lower the age for routine pneumococcal vaccines to 50. “The peak in serious invasive pneumococcal infections occurs earlier in the Black population” at about 55 to 60, he said. According to the CDC, 1 in 6 older adults who get either pneumococcal bloodstream infections or pneumococcal meningitis will die from the disease. A quarter-million hospitalizations from pneumococcal pneumonia are estimated to occur every year in the United States, according to the CDC.

LOS ANGELES — Dueling lawsuits against UCLA each describe a rise in antisemitic and anti-Palestinian bias since protests erupted on campus last year over the Israel-Hamas war. “UCLA has failed to provide Jewish students, faculty, and staff with the protection promised by such policies," the amended complaint says. Both complaints refer to task forces UCLA established to examine antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. The antisemitism report was released this month, and the one on anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim bias came out in May. Some pro-Israel students and faculty members said they did not feel safe walking to classes, and pro-Palestinian protesters said they were increasingly subjected to violence and suppression.

Former British nurse and convicted child serial killer Lucy Letby on Thursday lost an attempt to appeal against her conviction for trying to murder a newborn baby, amid questions over the fairness of her trials. Judge William Davis refused Letby’s application for leave to appeal against the conviction from her retrial. Letby attended the hearing by videolink from prison and sat impassively as the judge stated the court’s reasons for refusing her application. She can now only challenge those convictions if the Criminal Cases Review Commission refer those cases back to the Court of Appeal. Since her trials, Letby’s conviction has come under a spotlight, following criticism by some experts of medical and statistical evidence presented by the prosecution.
