China e-commerce is one of Goldman's top preferred sub-sectors — and there will be six key themes coming up in 2024, the bank said. The themes are: Consumers' focus on value for money — for which e-commerce platforms are well positioned. Goldman said that despite slowing consumption growth in China, e-commerce and e-commerce advertising is still one of its top preferred sectors — thanks in part to global expansion and attractive valuations. Goldman also expects its global e-commerce arm Temu to continue its growth momentum as a result of its global expansion. Goldman expects its third favored name — Kuaishou — to continue outpacing the industry.

That's quite similar to what investors can get on government bonds, while high-quality corporate bonds yield more nearly 6.5% in the U.S. and U.K., and 4.6% in Europe. Here's what the pros say on how to invest within the fixed income space — cash or bonds — in the next two years and beyond. Schroders' Head of Strategic Research Duncan Lamont also stated his preference for bonds, saying that putting your money in cash means being exposed to interest rate fluctuations. And those rates are higher than cash — at 6.2% for corporate bonds with an average maturity of three years, and 6.5% on high-quality U.S. corporate bonds with an average tenure of 10 years, noted Lamont. "Fixed income is experiencing greater inflows than equities in the US and the same trend relative to cash in Europe.

In a Nov. 22 note, Citi gave the stock a buy rating and a price target of $90, representing potential upside of around 818% from Tuesday's price. Tesla is a hot favorite when it comes to investing in the electric vehicle market. Brian Arcese, portfolio manager at investment firm Foord Asset Management, said he has a "far less convicted view" in Tesla retaining its dominance than in his preferred investing route in the EV market. He told CNBC Pro Talks last week that he's taken two "slightly untraditional" approaches to investing in that space. He names one U.S. stock, Edison International , as one such U.S. regulated utility company to play the EV trend. But he says that within that space, he's focused on companies that are the lowest-cost producers.

European growth stocks haven't been doing as well as their U.S. peers this year. Growth stocks in the region have underperformed value stocks by 13% since the start of the rate-hiking cycle in 2022, according to Goldman Sachs in a Nov. 20 report. Bond yields appear to have peaked — a positive for growth stocks — and economic growth should speed up in the first quarter of next year — a positive for value stocks. The bank recommends an overweight rating for pure growth companies, namely those in its growth basket. Goldman said "pure growth" companies are more cyclical than quality stocks or stocks with stable margins.

One part of artificial intelligence will have an increasing role to play, according to Morgan Stanley. The theme, which it called "Edge AI," involves running AI algorithms directly on a user's device, be it a smartphone, laptop or wearable, among other things. Edge AI can help save costs, reduce latency (or lag time), among other benefits, Morgan Stanley said. MediaTek Morgan Stanley said MediaTek , the largest chip design house in Asia, is gearing up for Edge AI. Much of the gains in the S & P 500 this year can be attributed to the "Magnificent Seven" stocks. The S & P 500 has rocketed nearly 19% in the year to date. His 2024 price target for the S & P 500 is 4,500. But, he said, "There's going to be … a very good stock picking opportunity, probably away from those seven [stocks] … where there should be more opportunities in the 493." Contrary to popular perception, falling inflation and interest rate cuts won't necessarily be good for stocks, according to Morgan Stanley's Chief U.S. Equity Strategist Mike Wilson. And falling inflation is bad for stocks because rising prices are what drives earnings, he explained. "Whenever inflation is falling like it is today, it's typically not good for the average stock because it's not good for earnings growth," Wilson explained. The bad news is that "it's pretty clear" that inflation is falling, he said. "So now that inflation is coming down, and they start cutting, just be careful what that means for stocks.

Which economic giant should emerging markets investors go for: China or India? India is the "best structural growth opportunity" in emerging markets, according to Malcolm Dorson, head of emerging markets strategy at Global X ETFs. LPL Financial's chief technical strategist, Adam Turnquist, added that India has emerged as an increasingly attractive alternative to China. Where and how to invest in India Investors could go for the "booming areas" in India — renewables such as hydrogen and solar energy, as well as agricultural tech, according to Sharma. But both Krosby and Dorson would advocate active management in emerging markets such as India, given political and economic complexities, among other reasons.

The bond bear market is the worst in more than 200 years, according to BNP Paribas' global chief investment officer. "This represents the biggest US bond bear market in over 200 years," Shing said. But, he said, one corner of the bond market is an opportunity for investors: U.S. "fallen angels" in the high-yield credit segment. "So actually, you can still capture 8% plus gross yield of these fallen angels, but at a much lower default risk at a time when the economy is slowing." That breakthrough could arrive by 2027 with the commercialization of SSB batteries, Bernstein said. Market volatility looks here to stay: Yields are still rising, a war is raging, and it's uncertain whether interest rates will stay higher for longer. Go for bonds Though volatility in the bond market has led to losses, some fund managers are saying that it's time to get back into this asset class, given that yields are high. Money market funds typically include short-term Treasurys. Bond yields move inversely to prices — that means a peak in interest rates may signal that bond prices have bottomed. When interest rates rise, bond prices typically fall as existing bonds with lower yields become less attractive.
