US stocks traded mixed as investors looked ahead to the central bank's meeting minutes. Traders are anticipating a quarter-point rate cut in November. Monetary policy is in focus after an unexpectedly hot job report in September, fueling doubt over whether the Fed will issue another jumbo rate cut this year. "The tone of the Fed minutes should not change expectations of further rate cuts—the Fed is still scrambling to catch up with inflation slowing in the US, and started cutting rates late. AdvertisementAccording to Pantheon Macroeconomics, the Fed is more likely to begin cutting rates in 25-basis-point increments rather than issuing another 50-basis-point rate cut.

A divide exists about reaching financial goals between confident and uncertain savers. Inflation and market volatility are major obstacles to achieving retirement savings goals. AdvertisementThere's a divide in America between the savers and investors who feel confident they're on track to achieve their financial goals and those who think they're not. Respondents cited inflation as the biggest obstacle to reaching retirement goals, followed by stock-market volatility, expenses, credit card debt, and child education. For example, if you're 35 with an income of $100,000, you should have between $100,000 to $200,000 set aside for retirement.

CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. October, then, is truly living up to its reputation as the most volatile month for stocks. But investors should keep in mind the uncomfortable swings in markets aren't always a good signal for the underlying health of stocks. In fact, when stocks dip because of mild repricing or a correction, that's a good opportunity for investors to swoop in, according to Johnson.

Without action from Congress, trillions of tax breaks enacted by former President Donald Trump will expire after 2025, including lower federal income tax brackets, among other provisions. Higher rates after 2025 could impact some brokerage accounts since investors pay annual taxes on earnings, experts say. If you sell investments that you have owned for one year or less, the profits incur "short-term capital gains," or regular income taxes. Generally speaking, it's good to avoid short-term gains as much as you can. Actively managed mutual funds often trigger capital gains payouts, even when investors haven't sold shares, which can be a costly year-end surprise.

The tech trade lost some of its steam over the summer, and that could create opportunities for tactical trading in the fourth quarter, several investors told CNBC. The Nasdaq Composite rose 2.6% during the third quarter, lagging behind both the broader S & P 500 's gain of 5.5% and the small Russell 2000's jump of 8.9%. Still, many investors are cautious of abandoning the tech trade completely even after a few bumpy months. Even after the recent slump, those stocks still account for about 31% of the S & P 500, and even more in many funds focused on tech or growth. What a hot job market means for inflation
  + stars: | 2024-10-06 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —The US job market is still piping hot. That comes after the Federal Reserve last month cut interest rates by a jumbo half-point, signaling that it is turning its attention from tamping down inflation to keeping the job market steady. But some warn that a still-strong labor market could make it more difficult for inflation to continue cooling. That’s because a low unemployment rate and hot job market underline a strong American consumer, whose spending helps drive up the cost of goods and services. Consumer inflation eased to its slowest annual pace since February 2021 in August, continuing a trend of cooling down in recent months.
