New York CNN —Sam’s Club said Tuesday it will raise pay to incentivize workers to stay with the company — and not jump ship to Costco. Sam’s Club, the membership club arm of Walmart, will increase its minimum wage to $16 starting in November from $15 an hour. To keep and grow its membership, Sam’s Club must meet a higher bar for customer service than retailers open to everyone. “The thing that we’re trying to do here is create good jobs that turn into great careers,” Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas told CNN. Warehouse clubs have also boomed since the pandemic in 2020, and Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Club have added millions of new members.

A single-vehicle collision last month involving a Tesla Semi electric truck took 50,000 gallons of water to extinguish and required aircraft to dump fire retardant overhead, according to a preliminary report on Friday from the National Transportation Safety Board. The Tesla truck, driven by an employee, was headed to the company's battery factory in Sparks, Nevada, from a warehouse in Livermore, California, the report said. Tesla CEO Elon Musk first showed off the Semi truck design at an event in November 2017, promising it would come to market in 2020. "Preparation of Semi factory continues and is on track to begin production by end of 2025," Tesla said in its second-quarter earnings report in July. The NTSB report confirmed that Tesla's driver-assistance systems, which are marketed as Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the U.S., were not "operational" at the time of the Semi collision and fire.

New York CNN —Costco customers are now paying more for their annual memberships for the first time since 2017. The price of Costco’s premium “Executive Membership” also went up, by $10 to $130 a year. The company estimated that 52 million memberships will be impacted, a little over half of which are Executive members, Costco previously said. Last year, Costco earned $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees, an 8% increase from 2022. Freight solutions company Breakthrough, which focuses on sustainable transportation, conducted a survey of 500 shippers and carriers this year that revealed extreme weather was cited as the top transportation challenge. And rather than rely on large warehouses, it uses its stores as hubs, which helps it change delivery fulfillment quickly. In addition to closing warehouses in cases of extreme weather, Amazon is using algorithms to plan delivery worker routes.
