Wall Street’s glum rainmakers deserve more love

Morgan Stanley’s (MS.N) investment banking revenue in the third quarter was its worst since 2009, at just over $1 billion. The rapid rise in interest rates, which makes traditional lending more lucrative for so-called universal banks, adds to the glum aura around investment banking. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsInvestment banking isn’t the biggest part of any bulge-bracket firm’s revenue, but it’s disproportionately profitable. Goldman made nearly $8 billion more from investment banking in 2021 than in the last four quarters. Declining volatility in markets is great for deals, but it’s nowhere near as good for banks’ trading desks, which tend to thrive on choppy conditions.

One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

Wall Street will be closely looking at Tesla's gross margins to gauge if the trough has passed — or if there's more downside potential ahead. Ahead of Tesla's quarterly release, several Wall Street analysts have pulled back their performance forecasts. Wells Fargo cuts target price Wells Fargo trimmed its price target by $5 to $260 on Oct. 9, leaving its investment recommendation at equal weight. However, we doubt either will be enough, and therefore more px cuts, particularly globally, may be needed in Q4 to hit the delivery target." The broker has a sell rating on the stock and a price target of $125 which, if reached, would send Tesla 49% lower.

For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

Ackman, in his initial tweet about Harvard, said that "a number of CEOs" shared his desire to publicly out the Harvard students who condemned Israel. Other business leaders were quick to echo his calls, winning plaudits on social media. In a visit to Harvard, Insider spoke with a range of students about the backlash to the statement on Israel. It's ironic, of course, to accuse students of silencing dissent when Ackman and other business leaders are seeking to do exactly that. But now, some Harvard students fear that the backlash from the business community will have a chilling effect on student speech.

Lots of Wall Street firms are getting out ahead of this week's earnings from Constellation Brands (STZ) with price target increases. At the time, we were optimistic and increased our price target on the Modelo and Corona maker to $270 per share from $260. All these factors "drive solid beer growth even as the macro environment gets worse," Falorni said. REUTERS/Jim Bourg/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. securities regulator on Friday said it had fined 12 companies, including brokers, investment advisers and credit rating firms, for record keeping failures. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said the companies, including Interactive Brokers Corp, Fifth Third Securities and Nuveen Securities, agreed to pay a total of $79 million and admitted they violated the record keeping rules. Credit rating agencies DBRS Inc. and Kroll Bond Rating Agency, LLC also agreed to pay civil penalties to settle SEC charges related to the record-keeping failures, the regulator added. Employees at both firms failed to preserve electronic communications, including off-channel messages on personal and work-issued devices, the SEC said. To settle the charges, DBRS agreed to pay $8 million in civil penalties and KBRA agreed to pay $4 million in civil penalties, the SEC said.

download the app Email address Sign up By clicking “Sign Up”, you accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy . I'm fascinated by Hollywood's interpretation of finance, from "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Margin Call" to "The Big Short." The depiction of hedge fund managers Ken Griffin (Nick Offerman), Steve Cohen (Vincent D'Onofrio), and Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen), whose firm's GameStop short position put it in Reddit traders' crosshairs, came across as too over-the-top and cartoonish. But if satire was the direction the movie wanted — à la "The Wolf of Wall Street" — it should have pushed harder. Instead, Gill's stoner brother (Pete Davidson) has to carry the comedy load, but most of his jokes come up short.

EquiLend generates 12-month earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of more than $25 million, two of the sources said. One of the sources added that EquiLend may fetch about $700 million in a sale. ORLANDO, Florida, Sept 28 (Reuters) - The 'dollar smile' can be a blessing for Wall Street, or a curse. But the speed and extent of the move in the dollar and Treasuries, and tightening of financial conditions, warrant vigilance. According to Goldman Sachs, U.S. financial conditions are the tightest this year. This is not dissimilar to other major economies and regions, some of which - the euro zone, China and emerging markets - are feeling an even tighter squeeze. It might be too early for that to appear in third-quarter results - many big Wall Street firms will have hedged their currency exposure over the near term - but if sustained, fourth-quarter profits could be affected.

This momentum is turning into bookings, and that gives me the confidence that our annual revenue growth will continue to accelerate moving forward." These bullish comments — taken together — made the softer fiscal second quarter guide all the more puzzling. But for now, we're chalking up the revenue growth softness to some lumpiness around one quarter to the next. Guidance Oracle's weaker-than-expected fiscal 2024 second quarter guide caused shares to drop a second leg lower after the closing bell Monday. Within that figure, Oracle expects cloud revenue to increase 29% to 31%, which at the midpoint is about stable from the first quarter.

Now, however, some firms and experts are walking back those predictions, calling into question the validity of a once-trusted recession indicator known as the yield curve inversion. Nobody rational would argue that the yield curve could have predicted a global pandemic and the short recession that followed it. NABE's most recent survey shows economists are divided on what a yield curve inversion means for the U.S. economy. In normal circumstances, yield curve inversions have been a pretty good indicator of recessions, according to Jebaraj. While the yield curve inverted in 2019, that was not necessarily a predictor of the 2020 recession.
