Kohl's on Tuesday forecast a bigger drop in annual sales than previously expected, a sign the department-store chain is struggling to draw in shoppers as it navigates a CEO change ahead of a promotion-heavy holiday shopping season. "Our third-quarter results did not meet our expectations, as sales remained soft in our apparel and footwear businesses," Kingsbury said. The CEO's surprise departure comes as the company enters the critical holiday shopping period including Black Friday, one of the busiest times of the year for retailers and shoppers. It logged a decrease in comparable sales of 9.3% for the quarter ended Nov. 2, its eleventh consecutive quarter of decline. This is Kohl's third straight quarter with a lowered sales forecast.

Now, VCs say many digital health startups are cutting their valuations to live another day. As of mid-November, PitchBook data shows 327 digital health startups that grabbed funding in 2021 but haven't raised since. Not even the AI boom, which has brought back-to-back fundraises for hot healthcare startups like Abridge, can make up for the discrepancy. "There are more digital health companies that are selling assets, selling people, or whatever they can," said Greg Yap, a partner at Menlo Ventures. AdvertisementVCs told BI they're pushing the next generation of healthcare startups for better discipline in balancing growth with profits.

Walmart on Monday confirmed that it's ending some of its diversity initiatives, removing some LGBTQ-related merchandise from its website and winding down a nonprofit that funded programs for minorities. Those companies include Tractor Supply , which said in June it was eliminating DEI roles and stopping sponsorship of Pride festivals. Among the changes, Walmart will no longer allow third-party sellers to sell some LGBTQ-themed items on Walmart's website, including items marketed to transgender youth like chest binders, company spokeswoman Molly Blakeman said. It's also moved away from using the term "diversity, equity and inclusion" or DEI in company documents, employee titles and employee resource groups. Walmart's DEI changes were first reported by Bloomberg News.

BBY YTD mountain Best Buy YTD These were not the results we wanted from Best Buy, but they are the numbers we had expected. Best Buy stock below $80 would push the dividend yield up to just under 5% — a nice payout for our patience. We still believe in the stock because Best Buy should benefit once mortgages drop and housing turnover picks up. Nordstrom on Tuesday beat Wall Street's quarterly sales expectations, as revenue grew about 4% year over year from shoppers buying clothing, shoes and activewear at both the company's namesake department store and its off-price chain. Compared with the second quarter, women's apparel, shoes and men's apparel sales in the fiscal third quarter also grew sequentially. Comparable sales increased 4% across Nordstrom's two brands, its namesake and its off-price chain, Nordstrom Rack. That easily topped analysts' expectations for 0.7% gains in comparable sales, according to StreetAccount. Nordstrom's sales growth, while modest, is notable at a time when sales of discretionary merchandise and the luxury category have been under pressure.

Every four years, the holiday season is a little more challenging for retailers as consumers get distracted by the selection of the next U.S. president. Citigroup analyst Paul Lejuez expects consumers will spend an average of 13% more this holiday season based on the findings of the bank's consumer survey. "Consumer wallets remain constrained, macro/geopolitical uncertainty persists and the shorter holiday season (five fewer days and Christmas on a Wednesday)," will weigh on spending, analyst Christopher Horvers said. You may not know it by looking at sticker prices in grocery aisles, but Thanksgiving dinner is more affordable than it has been in years. “If your dollar had the same overall purchasing power as a consumer in 1984 … this would be the least expensive Thanksgiving meal in the 39-year history of the AFBF Thanksgiving survey, other than the outlier of 2020,” the authors wrote. Target is offering a $20 Thanksgiving meal for four, including a small turkey, canned vegetables and stovetop stuffing mix. Walmart is promoting an “inflation-free Thanksgiving” meal of 29 items that can serve eight people for $56. “Don’t be afraid to check out multiple retailers.”Some Thanksgiving meal packages offer more ingredients, but that could mean preparing more dishes from scratch.

Currently, individuals and married couples can gift or bequeath $13.61 million and $27.22 million, respectively, before a 40% federal estate tax kicks in. AdvertisementThe heirs don't own the trust assets but rather have lifetime rights to the trust's income and real estate. Any payout is also protected from estate taxes, even if the insured's estate and death benefit exceed the exemption. AdvertisementThis tactic can also be used to save on estate taxes by ultra-rich entrepreneurs who have already used their exemption but have less-wealthy parents who haven't. When the children inherit the assets, the federal estate tax doesn't kick in as long as the grandparents' estate does not exceed $27.22 million.

Those travelers need to get their gates fast and the moving sidewalk wasn’t doing it. The economics of airport moving walkwaysSome experts point to high maintenance costs for removing the moving sidewalks. A group of German economics professors released an extensive study earlier this year about airport moving sidewalks. “The design of Denver International Airport is such that our moving walkways run where our gates are located. Aleinikoff said that while he doesn’t think moving sidewalks are inherently unsafe, they do require regular maintenance, and he says the “teeth” at the end of the moving sidewalks can be “pretty sharp.” Gow has, Aleinikoff said, made a full recovery.
