But a new report suggests we don't know whether organized retail crime is a big problem or not. "Organized retail crime," "retail theft," and similar terms don't correspond with categories that local police departments use to categorize crimes, Hanna Love, a fellow at Brookings, told Business Insider. It's unclear what makes organized retail crime "different than, say, other instances of shoplifting" from a data perspective, Love said. The NRF has said that it took back the estimate due to an error by an outside analyst who contributed to its report on organized retail crime. About fourteen states passed new laws on retail theft in 2022 and 2023, Stateline reported in December.

Be on the lookout for new packaging, shop store brands, and keep track of the unit pricing to avoid losing money to shrinkflation. Buy store brandsStore brands typically have cheaper prices than the major brands that you find on store shelves. Think Kirkland brand at Costco or the store brands in Walgreens or Walmart. Because store brands are already generally the cheaper options, they will also be slower to repackage or downsize their products. For example, a 30-ounce jar of pickles that costs $8 would list a unit price of $0.27 per ounce.

Read CNBC's full investigation into the alleged organized theft groups that police say are stealing and reselling items from retailers including Ulta Beauty, T.J. Maxx and Walgreens. Faced with sophisticated organized retail crime rings that investigators say have targeted his company, Ulta Beauty CEO Dave Kimbell is laying some blame on e-commerce sites. "You used to have to sell stolen goods at flea markets or out of the trunk of your car, or maybe just locally. The 53-year-old mother of three and her husband, Kenneth Mack, were charged with conspiracy to commit organized retail theft, grand theft and receipt of stolen property in connection with the alleged crime ring. During a raid at her California mansion in December, California Highway Patrol and Homeland Security agents say they found $387,000 in suspected stolen goods, most of which had come from Ulta.

The situation was so dire last year at one Walgreens store in San Francisco, employees resorted to padlocking frozen foods. The effort to undo some aspects of Prop 47 comes amid a broader check on some other liberal crime enforcement policies in America. Police data shows that larceny theft, which includes retail theft and car break-ins, is down 37% from this time last year. The two largest pharmacy chains in the United States will start dispensing the abortion pill mifepristone this month, a step that could make access easier for some patients. Officials at CVS and Walgreens said in interviews on Friday that they had received certification to dispense mifepristone under guidelines that the Food and Drug Administration issued last year. The chains plan to make the medication available in stores in a handful of states at first. Both chains said they would gradually expand to all other states where abortion was legal and where pharmacies were legally able to dispense abortion pills — about half of the states. Walgreens will start providing the pill within the next week in a small number of its pharmacies in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California and Illinois, said Fraser Engerman, a spokesman for the chain.

CVS and Walgreens will start selling the abortion pill mifepristone this month at certain pharmacy locations in states where it is legal to do so, spokespeople for the companies told CNBC on Friday. Mifepristone is the first pill used in the two-drug medication abortion regimen. Before the FDA's regulatory change, only a few mail-order pharmacies or specially certified doctors or clinics could distribute mifepristone. The regulatory change will potentially expand abortion access as the Biden administration wrestles with how best to protect abortion rights. Medication abortion is the most common method of terminating a pregnancy in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When done right, DEI programs not only give companies a competitive edge but also can be the very means of mending a broken America. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange during morning trading on January 31, 2024 in New York City. On Monday, Amazon officially becomes a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average , replacing Walgreens Boots Alliance . The Dow is a smaller average than the S&P 500, with just 30 components, and it's weighted by the share price of the individual stocks rather than the companies' total market value. That makes some investors view the Dow, begun in May 1896, as a poor representation of the American stock market. The three largest tech stocks in the Dow by market cap as of Friday were Apple , Microsoft and Salesforce , while key companies such as Nvidia and Alphabet were excluded.

If history is any guide, Walgreens Boots Alliance may fare better after getting tossed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average . In fact, data shows that betting on a stock that's leaving the Dow is often a better trade for investors than buying shares of a stock that's entering the 127-year-old average. What history shows Alcoa was the best-performing stock among the last 10 outgoing Dow members. For example, Honeywell International surged more than 40% one year after joining the Dow, while UnitedHealth rallied nearly 28%. General Electric , the last of the original 12 Dow stocks, plunged about 58% one year after leaving the average in 2018.

Get ready for a more volatile Dow with the Amazon addition
  + stars: | 2024-02-26 | by ( Robert Hum | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Will a more volatile Dow Jones Industrial average follow suit after Amazon's addition? Amazon joins the Dow Monday, as the 127-year old index adds a much higher-beta stock that could bring some bigger moves with more frequency going forward. Remember, that for every $1 any Dow stock moves, the index moves roughly 6.5 points. But contrast Amazon's moves to even Walmart, which had essentially the same share price pre-split as Amazon (WMT $175.56, AMZN $174.99). Apple had a share price of about $127 when it was added in March 2015 (price based on pre-2020 4-for-1 split levels).

Can Your Personal Medical Devices Be Recycled?
  + stars: | 2024-02-26 | by ( Ted Alcorn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Most of the plastic in your medicine cabinet is high-quality, medical grade — and devilishly difficult to safely dispose of, let alone recycle. Some at-home medical products, like needles that have come into contact with bodily fluids, should not even be relegated to household trash. They also sell special containers for shipping used, discarded needles and medical waste to sites for safe disposal. But when it comes to recycling plastic devices, from asthma inhalers to insulin and allergy pens, people may find themselves ping-ponging around without a solution. Some states recommend inquiring with local pharmacies, which in turn recommend checking with municipal recycling facilities.

About 62% of analysts covering the stock have assigned it a buy rating, with the average analyst predicting a potential upside of 14%. Our generation came of age during the ’90s toxic diet culture. Millennials weren’t taught to fear aging; we were taught to fear fat. And if you had a mother who internalized diet culture and projected it onto her children, the damage could also happen from within the family. Researchers have found that mothers who encourage weight loss or food restriction or even express dissatisfaction with their body weight may lead to their daughters’ becoming more likely to have eating-related problems. As my generation grew up and became more conscious of the impacts of diet culture, we began to openly celebrate and encourage body positivity.
