The next round of filings for spot ether ETFs with the SEC is due today, part of the ongoing regulatory process required before spot ether ETFs can be launched. One thing's for sure: the launch of spot bitcoin ETFs this year has been a success. That's still true for this year, but two of the top 10 ETF inflows year to date have been into spot bitcoin ETFs: iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) at number four, and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust (FBTC) at number eight. Would 50% of the inflows of the spot bitcoin ETF be a win? We'll talk about this with Matt Hougan from Bitwise Asset Management, one of the applicants for a spot ether ETF.

The U.K.'s center-left Labour Party has won a substantial parliamentary majority in the country's general election, unseating the incumbent Conservatives after 14 years. Manthey and her team picked the FTSE 250 index , which can be traded through exchange-traded funds such as iShares FTSE 250 UCITS ETF or Vanguard FTSE 250 UCITS , over the large-cap index FTSE 100 , as their "preferred post-election trade." The strategists, however, cautioned that historical data pointed toward lackluster returns immediately after the election results. More broadly, the investment bank's economist Anna Titareva said U.K. markets remain "heavily discounted" since after Brexit. After the election results were confirmed, they reiterated their stock preferences: Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon .

Yet, in a year of elections around the world, politicians are largely ignoring the problem, unwilling to level with voters about the tax increases and spending cuts needed to tackle the deluge of borrowing. In France, political turmoil has exacerbated concerns about the country’s debt, sending bond yields, or returns demanded by investors, soaring. “Many (politicians) are not willing to talk about the hard choices that are going to need to be made. Despite growing alarm over the federal government’s debt pile, neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump, the main 2024 presidential candidates, are promising fiscal discipline ahead of the election. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss triggered a collapse in the pound in 2022 when she tried to force through big tax cuts funded by increased borrowing.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe U.S. stock market has become dominated by about a handful of companies in recent years. Some experts question whether that "concentrated" market puts investors at risk, though others think such fears are likely overblown. The so-called "Magnificent Seven" — Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — make up about 31% of the index, it said. Why stock concentration may not be a concernThe S&P 500 tracks stock prices of the 500 largest publicly traded companies. When there were big market crashes, they generally don't appear to have been associated with stock concentration, he added.

Now, investment advisors are finding new and expansive use cases for AI in financial management. Vanguard is using AI to aggregate information from earnings transcripts and research reports, and has recently begun using AI to manage four of its stock funds. State Street is adding a generative AI feature to its platform which will answer customer questions about their portfolio and run analyses on portfolio data. There are some risks to using AI in investing, especially when your money could be on the line. Congress has pushed back on the rule, but Crawford is confident that AI regulation is in the cards, given the technology's far-reaching nature.

The bad news: account balances for the median 401(k) of a person approaching retirement (65+) remains very low. Higher returns, participation rates, savings ratesWhy do we care so much about 401(k) plans? Thanks to a change in the law several years ago, a record-high 59% of plans offered automatic enrollment in 401(k) plans. By switching to automatic enrollment, participants were automatically enrolled and had to "opt-out" if they did not want to participate. Plans with automatic enrollment had a 94% participation rate, compared with 67% for voluntary enrollment plans.

Americans' workplace retirement account balances are growing — but they're still lower than what people say they need to be on track for retirement, new data reveals. The median account balance in the U.S. is now $35,286, according to Vanguard's annual How America Saves report, which tracked the performance of 401(k)s and similar plans in 2023. Some of the lower balance totals have to do with age, too: People often make and save less money earlier in their careers. "People tend to accelerate retirement contributions as they get older because they tend to earn more, but also because they're getting closer to retirement age," says Michelle Gessner, a certified financial planner in Houston. Compound interest is interest that's continually earned on both the principal amount and any accumulated interest, leading to exponential growth over time.

But retirees and full-time caregivers have been unable to take advantage of a strong job market. Now, consumers are largely left with the same buying power they had four years ago rather than having seen real income gains over that time that would have helped bolster their financial picture. The outlook for the job market also varies by race with the unemployment rate at 5.6% for Black workers and 5% for Hispanic workers. Food prices have risen around 25% over the past four years while Biden was in office. The rise in food prices has disproportionately impacted lower-income households, which spend around a third of their discretionary income on food, according to a 2022 Agriculture Department survey.

The average 401(k) savings rate — including employee deferrals and company contributions — has maintained historic levels as plan designs make it easier for workers to set money aside. In 2023, the average combined savings rate was an estimated 11.7%, which matched a record high from 2022, according to Vanguard's yearly analysis of more than 1,500 qualified plans and nearly 5 million participants. A separate Fidelity report also found record savings with a combined rate of 14.2% for the first quarter of 2024. And 43% of employees increased their savings rate that year, Vanguard reported. In 2023, an estimated 14% of participants hit the 401(k) deferral limit, which was $22,500 for savers under age 50, Vanguard found.

Though municipal bonds generally offer income that's free of federal income taxes – and state taxes if the investor resides in the issuing state – they also come with lower yields compared to other bonds. When it comes to muni bonds, the higher your tax bracket, the more valuable the tax-free income is. A tax-conscious approach to fixed income You don't have to bulk up on municipal bonds to get the best yield for your tax scenario. Municipal bonds are good contenders in taxable brokerage accounts, where investors can benefit from their tax-free income. Some fund families offer "tax-aware strategies" either in mutual funds or ETFs, which can include some exposure to municipal bonds, as well as equities.

Some Trump allies, including another veteran of his 2016 campaign and the Trump White House, former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, have downplayed the former president’s comments. Earlier this month, Conway noted that Trump’s Justice Department did not try to prosecute Hillary Clinton despite the chants of “Lock her up!” at 2016 campaign rallies. But other allies have responded more forcefully to Trump’s conviction in his New York hush money trial. He was sentenced to four months in prison, and a federal judge earlier this month ordered him to report to prison by July 1.
