Over the last year, a growing number of cinnamon products have been recalled in the U.S. due to high levels of lead. That prompted Consumer Reports to test brands such as Badia, McCormick and Morton & Bassett, along with smaller brands, across 17 mainstream and niche grocery stores. Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday it has yet to identify “a clear source” of infection in a Missouri patient who tested positive for the bird flu virus despite no known contact with poultry or dairy cows. Since March, there have been 13 bird flu infections in poultry and dairy workers amid an outbreak of H5N1 spreading rapidly in dairy cows across 200 dairy herds in 14 states, according to the CDC. The patient was hospitalized, officials believe, not because of the infection but because of the patient’s underlying medical conditions. They’re also asking about the type and source of meat and dairy the patient consumed, including any raw dairy. No bird flu infections in dairy cattle have been reported in Missouri, state health officials said in a release Friday.

More than a half-million children in Gaza have received a first dose of the polio vaccine, the World Health Organization said Thursday. In a Phase 3 clinical trial, 99.9% of participants who took a twice-a-year injection of lenacapavir for HIV prevention did not acquire an infection, according to data from drugmaker Gilead Sciences. There were only two cases among 2,180 patients – effectively reducing the risk of HIV infection by 96% and proving 89% more effective than Truvada, a pill taken once a day. It’s a “significant breakthrough in HIV prevention,” according to a news release from the World Health Organization in July. The findings bring the phenomenon — and the controversy — of the latest new and powerful weight loss drugs to the youngest age group yet. CNN —The Israeli military detained a convoy of United Nations vehicles for several hours in northern Gaza on Monday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement they were acting “following intelligence that a number of Palestinian suspects were present in the convoy” and delayed it to question them. The IDF said the convoy was not involved in the transport of polio vaccines but was being used instead to exchange UN personnel. A person in Missouri has been infected with bird flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. The adult, who didn't have known contact with poultry or dairy cows, was hospitalized on Aug. 22 and has recovered. At least 196 herds of dairy cows in 14 states have confirmed outbreaks of the H5 influenza virus, according to the CDC. There has been no evidence that H5N1 — the H5 virus spreading in dairy cows — has been spreading from person to person. The Missouri State Public Health Laboratory was sent a sample from the patient, Missouri health officials said in the release.
