Aug 29 (Reuters) - A University of North Carolina graduate student has been charged in the fatal shooting on Monday of a professor at the school's Chapel Hill campus, the university said on Tuesday. A university website showed Qi was a doctoral student who had joined Yan's research group in January 2022. It was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting in a campus lab on Monday afternoon. "We know that the wounds of this tragedy will not heal quickly," Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said in an email announcing Yan's death to the campus community. He said the university would ring the campus bell tower and hold a moment of silence on Wednesday afternoon in Yan's honor.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was under a shelter-in-place order on Monday afternoon after the school warned that an “armed, dangerous person” was on campus. The university sent an alert just after 1 p.m. that advised people in the area to go inside and stay away from windows. A witness on campus told CNN they were locked down in their building and saw armed officers searching campus. The UNC Hospital also has received no patients from the scene, a spokesperson told CNN. The American Alliance for Equal Rights sued Perkins Coie in Dallas and Morrison & Foerster in Miami two months after the Supreme Court sided with another group founded by activist Edward Blum and rejected affirmative action policies used by many colleges to increase enrollment of racial minorities. In the latest challenge to the role race may play in school admissions, a legal activist group asked the Supreme Court on Monday to hear a case on how students are selected at one of the country’s top high schools, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.
