From coast to coast, the minimum wage is falling short of how much Americans need to comfortably afford average rent prices in major cities. The federal minimum wage has sat at $7.25 for the past 15 years. Fair market rent is based on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's fair market rent standard. Under this model, around 40% of similar units in the area rent for less than the listed fair market rental price and 60% rent for more. Here's how the minimum wage in 15 large U.S. cities compares with the hourly wage you'd actually need to earn in order to comfortably afford a one-bedroom dwelling at fair market price, per Clever Real Estate's data.

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's Llama 4 AI models are training on the biggest GPU cluster in the industry. During Meta's earnings call, he said the cluster is "bigger than 100,000 H100s." A lot of computing power is going into training Meta's forthcoming Llama 4 AI models — more than anything currently offered by the competition, according to Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg added in the earnings call Wednesday that Meta's Llama 4 models will have "new modalities, capabilities, stronger reasoning" and be "much faster." Meanwhile, Musk tweeted earlier this week that xAI will soon double its cluster size in the coming months to 200,000 H100 and H200 chips.

It is clear what Russia stands to gain from an influx of some 10,000 North Korean troops to aid its war in Ukraine. North Korean troops are expected to help with that. North Korea, for its part, needs a partner that will shield it from the United Nations Security Council as it pursues its nuclear ambitions. “North Korea is trying to get as many benefits as it can from this relationship,” said Edward Howell, an expert on North Korea at the Chatham House think tank. “If thousands of North Korean troops learn how to survive on a battlefield full of drones,” Gabuev said, “that is a lesser problem than North Korea having quieter nuclear-capable submarines.

Investors have been focused on Big Tech AI spending and returns. That's a worry at Microsoft partly because feedback on the company's Copilot AI has been mixed. Others have been concerned that Big Tech spending on artificial intelligence is outpacing results. Goldman said Microsoft has been counting on its AI Copilot and other generative AI efforts at Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365 to draw enterprise clients. When I learned how to really cook, Trader Joe's frozen meals became less useful. I made frequent trips as a college student and after I graduated, but eventually, shopping at Trader Joe's became impractical for me. As someone with ADHD, I'll also admit there were plenty of times I forgot about Trader Joe's frozen meals until they were freezer-burned anyway. The crowding at Trader Joe's is oftentimes too much for meI've shopped at Trader Joe's in many larger cities, including Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama, and found a similar experience in each — crowded aisles and long lines. Trader Joe's doesn't have sales, and there are no rewards programsLoyalists shop at Trader Joe's because they love the store's products, and I get that.

Meta has been so quick to build out its massive data center and computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence projects that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is even a bit surprised. In a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta's third-quarter earnings report, Zuckerberg explained to investors how Meta's rising costs for the year are tied to the speed at which employees are able to get data centers, servers and chips for AI up and running. AMD aims to close the gap with Nvidia, which holds 80% of the GPU market. AMD still has a large gap with Nvidia, as it lags behind in GPUs or graphics processing units. Su responded that AMD's road map "actually closed a good part of that gap" with Nvidia's products and that AMD holds an advantage in data center retrofitting. Advertisement"As much as we still believe NVDA will be hard to shake from its 80-85% AI share, AMD still has done an enviable job from virtually zero to ~5% market share," Arya wrote in a note released on Wednesday. Even if this share remains unchanged, the underlying AI growth will still provide AMD "the chance to participate," he added.

Bottom line The main part of our AMD thesis — fast-growing sales of its MI300 AI chips — is still on track, so we view the post-earnings pullback as a buying opportunity. Given how integral these AI chips are to AMD's growth, we were pleased management on Tuesday night raised its full-year sales projections to exceeding $5 billion. Another factor: AMD's chips passed some performance milestones with customers, Su said. We believe Su's AI roadmap — outlined at its AI event earlier this month — will lead to significant sales growth in 2025 and thereafter. Quarterly commentary Sales in AMD's all-important data-center segment came in $3.55 billion, exceeding estimates and more than doubling year over year.

Major equipment suppliers in Europe say that U.S. chip designers are calling on them to lower their water temperatures to accommodate the hotter AI chips, according to Herbert Radlinger, managing director at NDC-GARBE. Energy efficiency is high on the European Commission's agenda, as it seeks to reach its goal of reducing energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030. The EU predicted in 2018 that energy consumption of data centers could rise 28% by 2030, but the advent of AI is expected to boost that number two or threefold in some countries. Many of the recent discussions have focused on different ways to source "prime power" for AI data centers and for the potential for more collaboration with utilities, said Steven Carlini, chief advocate of AI and data centers and vice president at Schneider Electric. Liquid cooling will require a "reconfiguration," Gunen explained, adding that new data centers are already coming ready with this technology.

AMD shares are up about 20% so far in 2024, although rivals such as Nvidia and Broadcom have had much greater gains during the same period, driven by the increasing demand for AI chips. AMD is the second-largest vendor of data center graphics processing units, or GPUs, which are used to train and deploy large generative AI models. AMD's AI chips are reported in its data center segment, which more than doubled on an annual basis to $3.5 billion in total sales. Overall data center revenue was up 122% year over year. AMD's gross margin expanded to 54%, which the company said was because of higher data center revenue.
