London CNN —The European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates Thursday, lowering borrowing costs for the second time in recent months as inflation slows and Europe’s economy stumbles. The ECB cut rates for the first time in five years in June, but kept them unchanged at its last meeting in July. However, it marginally downgraded the outlook for economic growth in the eurozone to 0.8%, from 0.9% projected in June. “Financing conditions remain restrictive, and economic activity is still subdued, reflecting weak private consumption and investment,” the ECB said. Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell said Friday he expects the central bank will cut its key interest rate in the near future in response to slower economic growth and cooling inflation. "The labor market is no longer overheated, and conditions are now less tight than those that prevailed before the pandemic. Starting in the spring of 2022, the Fed raised interest rates to a level not seen in nearly two decades as it worked to combat soaring inflation. CNN —US wholesale inflation slowed as expected in July, easing after an unexpected flare-up the month before. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.1%, a slower pace than the 0.2% increase seen in June. Economists had expected that prices would increase 0.2% on a monthly basis and slow to 2.3% annually, according to FactSet estimates. The modest monthly increase in the overall PPI was attributed to a 0.6% jump in goods prices, according to the BLS report. When stripping out energy and food prices — categories that also tend to be volatile — core PPI prices were flat for the month, bringing down the annual gain to 2.4%, its lowest since March.

PARIS — Two-time WNBA champion A'ja Wilson scored 21 points as the United States survived an unexpectedly close contest from host France, winning 67-66 for their eighth straight Olympic gold medal in women's basketball on Sunday. The U.S. women last lost in Olympic play when they failed to bring home gold in 1992. But after France drew a foul and Cooper made both free throws, a last-minute shot by Williams was not enough. "The dynasty we've built here at USA Basketball has been incredible," Wilson said in a postgame interview. For the first time in Olympic history, the gold medal games in both the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments were between the same nations.
