CNN —United Nations Secretary General António Guterres issued a stark warning as he gathered world leaders for a high-level summit on the climate crisis: “Humanity has opened the gates to hell.”“Horrendous heat is having horrendous effects. Sweltering temperatures spawning disease,” he said in a speech to open the Climate Ambition Summit, happening alongside the UN General Assembly in New York. The aim of the summit is to increase ambitions on climate action, Guterres said. Selwin Hart, a special adviser to the UN Secretary-General on climate action and just transition, said there has been “massive backsliding” on commitments. “We must make up time lost to foot-dragging, arm-twisting and the naked greed of entrenched interests raking in billions from fossil fuels.”

Britain is tossing aside its last green trump card

Ahead of a likely national poll next year, the British prime minister is considering watering down the country’s targets for electric vehicles and energy efficiency. Yet the weaker targets would come at a time when the Conservative government’s lackadaisical environmental approach means that green transition momentum is stalling. Faced with these obvious policy gaps, the government’s bold targets at least gave industry and consumers a clear signal that the green transition was inevitable. Weakening them will probably lead manufacturers to delay investment in new car or battery plants, and consumers to put off buying green vehicles. I am proud that Britain is leading the world on climate change.”Editing by George Hay and Oliver TaslicOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Elon Musk is a "jerk," his biographer Walter Isaacson told Quartz. He also drew comparisons between Musk, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos' "hardcore" leadership styles. Isaacson told Quartz that "caring and emotional" executives could hold back a company because "they aren't going to fire people, they aren't going to be tough, they aren't going to be rough." The author compared Musk with Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos and said they'd also taken a "hardcore" approach to running Microsoft and Amazon. The biographer, who followed Musk for two years, told CNBC in July he " does not have a fingertip feel" for emotions.

London CNN —Rishi Sunak has just under a month to answer the most critical question he faces as British Prime Minister: why does his Conservative Party deserve another five years in power at the next election? London CNN —Birmingham — the biggest British city after London — is in dire financial straits. “Local government is facing a perfect storm,” Sharon Thompson, Birmingham City Council’s deputy leader, said in remarks broadcast Tuesday. How Birmingham went bustThompson blamed Birmingham’s financial troubles partly on an outstanding £760 million ($950 million) legal bill pertaining to the equal pay claims, which resulted from a Supreme Court ruling in 2012. The original case was brought by 174 former council employees, all except four of whom were women. They argued that this breached the equality clauses of their employment contracts under the Equal Pay Act of 1970 — and the court agreed.

London CNN —Britain’s second-biggest city effectively declared itself bankrupt on Tuesday, shutting down all nonessential spending after being issued with equal pay claims totaling up to £760 million ($956 million). Birmingham City Council, which provides services for more than one million people, filed a Section 114 notice on Tuesday, halting all spending except on essential services. The deficit arose due to difficulties paying between £650 million (around $816 million) and £760 million (around $954 million) in equal pay claims, the notice report says. The city now expects to have a deficit of £87 million ($109 million) for the 2023-24 financial year. Sharon Thompson, deputy leader of the council, told councilors on Tuesday it faces “longstanding issues, including the council’s historic equal pay liability concerns,” according to the United Kingdom’s PA Media news agency.

UK is in danger of becoming the Nigeria of wind

LONDON, July 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Britain is supposed to be the Saudi Arabia of wind power. Vattenfall’s decision on Thursday to halt the 1.4 gigawatt (GW) Norfolk Boreas project is just the latest sign that Britain’s most appropriate fossil-fuel comparator may not be the biggest and most efficient producer. Vattenfall, a state-held Swedish power company, has gone cool for reasons that are well-discussed in the wind sector. The obvious move for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would be to allow developers to charge more for power, to make up for higher costs.
