CNN —A slew of viral conspiracy videos on social media have made baseless claims that the Maui wildfires were started intentionally as part of a land grab, highlighting how quickly misinformation spreads after a disaster. Still, conspiracy theories continue to circulate as nearly 400 people are still unaccounted for. It’s not uncommon for conspiracy theories to make the rounds after a national crisis. Social media platform X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. That means posts sharing conspiracy theories that spark fear and emotion may perform better in a crisis than those sharing straightforward, accurate information.

De Graaf, a 30-year veteran of the European Commission, was tasked with resurrecting the EU office in the Bay Area. The generative AI boomGenerative AI was a virtually foreign concept when de Graaf arrived in San Francisco last September. In June, the European Parliament cleared a major step in passing the EU AI Act, which would represent the EU's package of AI regulations. Tech companies that have for years criticized the EU for overly aggressive regulations are now asking, "Why is it taking you so long?" The rapidly changing landscape of generative AI makes it tricky for the EU to quickly formulate regulations.

Recalled baby products linked to more than 100 infant deaths are still widely sold on Facebook Marketplace despite thousands of requests from federal regulators to take down the items, four members of Congress said. Lawmakers wrote that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has sent Facebook parent Meta about 1,000 requests a month since 2022 to remove the recalled Boppy Newborn Lounger, but the product keeps cropping up for sale on the platform. In June, the CPSC's commissioners sent a letter to Zuckerberg calling on him to do more to prevent the sale of the recalled products. In the letter, the members of Congress asked for more information about Meta's product safety policies, how it monitors recalls and how many staff members are dedicated to consumer-product safety issues. But they did not accuse the companies of selling recalled products.

July 31 (Reuters) - X owner Elon Musk and Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino will both oversee the trust and safety team at the company formerly known as Twitter, the social media concern said on Monday. X's product and engineering team will report to Musk, while Yaccarino will oversee all other divisions, including human resources, legal, finance, sales and operations, X said. The trust and safety team, which is responsible for content moderation, has been the focus of some criticism of the platform after Musk acquired the company last October. Yaccarino said in the email that three X leaders will oversee different responsibilities within trust and safety, including law enforcement operations and threat disruptions. The changes to trust and safety come after Ella Irwin resigned as head of the team in June.

Twitter threatens to sue hate-speech watchdog group

In a July 20 letter shared publicly Monday, Twitter threatened to sue the Center for Countering Digital Hate, accusing the group of a campaign to hurt Twitter by driving away its advertisers. The CCDH has published numerous reports about various social media companies’ approach to everything from vaccine misinformation to online racism and antisemitism. Since taking over Twitter, Musk has slashed roughly 80% of the company’s staff, including many working on the platform’s content moderation teams. Threatening lawsuits has become a favored tactic for Musk as Twitter faces continued pressure. Earlier this month, Twitter threatened to sue Facebook-parent Meta over the launch of its competing app, Threads, accusing the company of copying Twitter’s product through trade secret theft.

Yoel Roth slammed Elon Musk's decision to reinstate a user that posted a child torture image. Yoel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and safety, took a dig at Elon Musk's decision to reinstate an account that had posted an obscured image of a toddler being tortured. "For now, we will delete those posts and reinstate the account," Musk wrote on X, after McGee's suspension brought backlash from his right-wing supporters and a number of "Free Dom" posts. Roth, the site's former head of trust and safety, wrote on BlueSky that he found Musk's decision to be confusing. But after resigning from the role two weeks into Musk's ownership, Roth changed his tune.

Four leading artificial intelligence companies launched a new industry group on Wednesday to identify best safety practices and promote the technology's use toward great societal challenges. The group underscores how, until policymakers come up with new rules, the industry will likely need to continue to police themselves. Anthropic, Google , Microsoft and OpenAI said the new Frontier Model Forum had four key goals, which Google outlined in a blog post:1. Advancing AI safety research to promote responsible development of frontier models, minimize risks, and enable independent, standardized evaluations of capabilities and safety. Identifying best practices for the responsible development and deployment of frontier models, helping the public understand the nature, capabilities, limitations, and impact of the technology.

New York CNN —OpenAI’s head of trust and safety announced on Thursday plans to step down from the job. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called for AI regulation during a Senate panel hearing in March. Willner’s exit comes as OpenAI continues to work with regulators in the United States and elsewhere to develop guardrails around fast-advancing AI technology. OpenAI was among seven leading AI companies that on Friday made voluntary commitments agreed to by the White House meant to make AI systems and products safer and more trustworthy. As part of the pledge, the companies agreed to put new AI systems through outside testing before they are publicly released, and to clearly label AI-generated content, the White House announced.

Dave Willner, the head of trust and safety OpenAI, announced on Thursday in a LinkedIn post that he is stepping down from his executive role at the company to prioritize his work-life balance. "OpenAI is going through a high-intensity phase in its development — and so are our kids," Willner wrote in his LinkedIn post. Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO, rejects the phrase "work-life balance" all together, as it implies a trade-off between life and work. In the mean time, Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, will "directly manage" the trust and safety team, the spokesperson said.

The Commerce Department blacklisted two European cyber firms that build spyware software, the Commerce Department announced Tuesday, including technology hawked by both firms that was used to surveil Meta users and reportedly at least one Meta employee. The software exploited vulnerabilities in Android and iOS software and deployed hundreds of spoof Meta accounts to surveil activists, politicians and journalists around the world. Meta in December 2021 warned thousands of Facebook users that they'd been targeted by spyware-for-hire software, including Predator. The New York Times reported extensively on Intellexa's Predator product, and the company's efforts to sell it to a Ukrainian intelligence agency. Intellexa's Predator was also used by Greek intelligence to spy on a Meta trust and safety employee, the Times reported.

Experts, and even some executives overseeing AI companies, say these tools risk spreading false information to mislead voters, including ahead of the 2024 US election. But they now face a perfect storm of factors that could make it harder than ever to keep up with the next wave of election misinformation. Experts worry that the proliferation of generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, could make it easier for bad actors to create election misinformation. OpenAI, the maker of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, issued a stark warning about the risk of AI-generated misinformation in a recent research paper. The platforms largely use a mix of human and automated review to identify misinformation and manipulated media.

Meta's Threads will use rate limits to tackle an increase in spam. "Spam attacks have picked up so we're going to have to get tighter on things like rate limits, which is going to mean more unintentionally limiting active people (false positives). Twitter users howled their disapproval and many commentators said the spam reasoning was bogus. "I seem to waste half my time blocking bots pushing gambling and crypto sites," one Threads user posted, following Mosseri's update. On Sunday, Mashable reported that Bluesky users protested after several accounts used racial slurs in their usernames because the platform failed to block the ability for users to register such names.

Advertisers are eagerly watching how Meta's new Threads messaging app develops over the next few months as they look for a new social channel to reach consumers while Twitter continues to struggle. Meta is currently more focused on building the core Threads product as opposed to monetizing the app, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has said in various interviews and a post on Threads. "It's the most instant onboarding experience I've ever experienced in the history of my career, and my entire career has been in social," Tipograph said. Although it was easy for current Instagram users to create Threads accounts, he said, it's unclear how active they will be on the service. Since Threads is so new, it's unclear which kind of audience Threads is attracting, Tipograph said.

SAN FRANCISCO — Discord's head of trust and safety said Tuesday that the popular chat platform was changing and clarifying its child safety policies including those around around teen dating and AI-generated child sexual abuse material, an announcement that comes after an NBC News investigation last month into child safety on the platform. The Washington Post reported in June that AI-generated child sex images have proliferated across the internet in recent months. The company said in a blog post announcing the changes that the updated child sexual abuse material policy would include "any text or media content that sexualizes children, including drawn, photorealistic, and AI-generated photorealistic child sexual abuse material. Under this policy, teen dating servers are prohibited on the platform and we will take action against users who are engaging in this behavior." In June, an NBC News investigation found hundreds of Discord servers that appeared to promote child abuse material, and some servers that advertised themselves as teen or child-dating servers that solicited nude images from minors.

Elon Musk abruptly decided to give all Twitter users a maximum amount of access to the site. Twitter workers have received little communication on the change from Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino. The change allows users to view only a certain number of Tweets before being prevented from interacting with the site. "Neither of them have said anything about what's going on," one of the people familiar said, referring to Musk and new CEO Linda Yaccarino. Once Musk decided to implement the rate limit, many Twitter workers asked in private Slack channels if it was a permanent change.

"To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we've applied the following temporary limits," Musk announced on Twitter in the first of a series of tweets about the decision. Throughout the day, Musk continued posting about the rate limits, increasing the number of posts users could view each time. As Twitter users scrolled through the site, once they reached the new viewing limits, no new content would be displayed. "Futzing with rate limits is probably the easiest way to break Twitter."
