Visitors walk on the Sannenzaka slope in Kyoto, Japan, on Sunday, June, 26, 2022. Visitor spending in Japan broke an annual record in just nine months, official data showed on Wednesday, demonstrating the economic power of a tourism boom fueled by the weak yen. Travelers spent 5.86 trillion yen ($39.27 billion) through September, preliminary figures from the Japan National Tourism Organization showed. That eclipsed the 5.3 trillion yen spent in all of 2023, a record for any 12-month period. Tourism spending, classified as an export in national accounts, is poised to become Japan's second-biggest export sector after autos and ahead of electronic components.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures sat near flat Thursday night after the blue-chip average finished the preceding session at a record closing level. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures were rose 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively. Those moves come after a rally in Travelers propelled the Dow to finish Thursday at an all-time closing high. The broad S&P 500 inched lower despite notching a fresh intraday high during the session, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite concluded modestly higher. That would mark the longest weekly winning streaks in 2024 for both the Dow and S&P 500.

At least 94 people were killed and 50 others wounded when the driver of a fuel tanker lost control and it crashed and exploded in northern Nigeria on Tuesday, a police spokesperson said. The casualties were local residents who had gathered to collect fuel from the tanker after it crashed. The wounded were taken to local hospitals in Ringim and Hadejia towns where they were being treated, Adam said. Many roads in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, are poorly maintained and riven with potholes, causing accidents that claim dozens of lives every year. Last month, at least 48 people were killed in north-central Nigeria when a fuel tanker exploded after colliding with another truck carrying travelers and cattle, ensnaring other vehicles as well in the blaze.

I recently stayed at The Inn at St. John, a historic hotel in Portland, Maine. We stayed at the inn during one of the busiest Portland weekends, making the cost higher. Described on the hotel's website as a charming Victorian-era inn, The Inn at St. John was established by railroad tycoon John Deering in 1897, toward the end of the Gilded Age. Now, the hotel claims the title of being the oldest continually operating hotel in Portland. Here's what it was like to stay at The Inn at St. John in Portland, Maine.

Elliott Investment Management has requested a special meeting at Southwest Airlines , formalizing the launch of a long-signaled proxy fight for control of the carrier's board. Elliott has also trimmed the size of its board slate from 10 director candidates to eight, after Southwest shrunk its board size from 15 to 12. CNBC reported last month that Elliott was preparing to call a special meeting. David Hess, who joined Southwest's board in 2021, was also on the board of Arconic in the midst of its proxy fight with Elliott. Elliott has never before called for a special meeting, which at Southwest carries a higher threshold of approval compared with voting at a regularly scheduled shareholder meeting.

On July 6, thousands of anti-tourism protesters marched through the streets of Barcelona, shouting: "Tourists go home!" Tourists caught in the crossfire of Barcelona's July protest — some of whom endured water guns and confrontations caught on tape — may not be inclined to return. And the top three most popular destinations were the very spots where protesters staged marches this year. A spokesperson for Barcelona's City Council told CNBC Travel that managing the city's tourism is one its main priorities since it is "reaching a limit with 17 million visitors per year." Exploring Petra, a world wonderWithin the tomb beneath the Treasury, archaeologists found a ceramic vessel resembling the Holy Grail. Only a handful of tombs uncovered in Petra in the past several decades have been found with untouched burials, Creasman said. As the researchers continue to study the skeletons, Creasman said they are hopeful more details will come to light about who the people were in life. Researchers would like to date the skeletons and artifacts as well as use extracted DNA to determine whether the dozen skeletons are related.

“I think instinct is everything, and collaboration,” Stan said in a recent interview with CNN. CNN reported in May, around the time of the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, that Trump’s team was considering a lawsuit over the film’s release and distribution. “This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked,” Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said in a statement to CNN at the time. In an interview with CNN, the film’s director Ali Abbasi questioned whether US audiences would ever get to see it. “So that became the red thread through the story, and we organized everything around it, and that was very helpful.”“The Apprentice” is now playing in theaters.

The trip left me thinking about how backpacking compares to traveling with a carry-on suitcase. A backpack might be more convenient for flights, but suitcases are better for long travel days. AdvertisementFor my European adventure, I was able to pack lighter than ever for the longest trip I'd ever taken. By the end of it, I questioned whether a backpack was really more convenient than a carry-on suitcase. AdvertisementSo, if you're not used to carrying weight on your back and your itinerary includes long travel days, I'd consider taking a suitcase.

The most luxurious experience of them all, however, could be found in the dining car. The latter was the first train car to offer on-board meals, including regional specialties like gumbo, which were prepared in a 3-foot-by-6 foot kitchen. By the 1870s, dining cars could be found on sleeper trains across North America. But this decentralized production model also contained the seed of dining car’s ultimate demise. And despite a revival of interest in train travel on the continent, dining cars (or certainly those equipped with kitchens) are now largely the preserve of tourist services.
