Defending champion Kimberly Garcia Leon of Peru led a breakaway group that at the halfway mark included Perez, Montag, Olympic champion Palmisano and Yang Jiayu of China, the 2017 winner and current world record holder. The 27-year-old finished 25 seconds ahead of Montag and became the first Spanish woman to win the event at the world championships. "I cannot even put into words how important it was to me to win this gold," Perez, the 35km world record holder, said. Perez was disqualified from the 20km walk at last year's worlds as well as the 2022 European Championships, and finished fourth at the Tokyo Games. A transgender pride flag appeared in the stands of Hayward Stadium in Eugene, Ore., just as the middle distance runner Nikki Hiltz stepped onto the track. The pink, blue and white flag was held overhead, then waved as Hiltz, who identifies as transgender and nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, made their way to the far side of the track for the 1,500-meter final of the U.S. National Championships in July. “It was a statement,” Hiltz said. “It reminded me that this is bigger than just me.”After 4 minutes 3.10 seconds, Hiltz broke the tape with an explosive final kick to overpower a stacked field that included Athing Mu, the 800 gold medalist at the Tokyo Games; Cory McGee and Heather MacLean, Olympic 1,500 runners; and Sinclaire Johnson, the 2022 national champion in the event. Hiltz had gotten to this point, they said, partially because of the community around them that cheers not because of their fast times but because of what and who they stand for, starting with themselves.

The "twisties," which cut short Biles' Tokyo run, were nowhere in sight on Saturday as the U.S. gymnast appeared back to her previous, top-notch form after taking more than a year off from the sport. During that break she prioritized her mental health, which became a major focus following her abrupt withdrawal from the team finals in Tokyo. "I’m still continuing to work on myself and go to therapy," Biles said, stressing the importance of a mental break. "I think I’m in better shape than I was in 2021," she said. "Who knows, I'm not going to think too far ahead," Biles said when asked about her plans.

The U.S. team came into the World Cup as the favorite to win it, but it is far from living up to its potential. No country has ever won three straight World Cups but U.S. fans will accept nothing less from the world's top-ranked side. Andonovski is banking on a new generation of talent in Australia and New Zealand, as he welcomed 14 World Cup first-timers to the 23-player squad. MELBOURNE, July 18 (Reuters) - Bigger, bolder and breaking new ground, the Women's World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand on Thursday with the United States bidding to extend their golden era by winning an unprecedented third straight title. Four years on from dominating in France, the top-ranked Americans remain favourites to secure a record-extending fifth World Cup triumph with a new generation of players. However, the landscape has changed irrevocably through the World Cup cycle, with money, talent and professionalism shifting to the sport's traditional European heartlands. Olympic champions Canada, who upset the U.S. in the Tokyo Games semi-finals, also cannot be discounted as they look to give 40-year-old Christine Sinclair a first title at her sixth World Cup. Other players say the money is not nearly enough, given the $440 million prize pool for the men's World Cup.

Fencing is usually among the least visible Olympic events, but a year out from the Paris Games it is providing political, sporting and familial drama related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A top Russian coach has been fired after a star épée couple left three weeks ago for the United States. And a high-profile fencing divorce has touched the upper reaches of the Russian Olympic Committee and even led to the entry of “raspberry frappé” into the lexicon as a sword-fighting put-down. One of the Russian fencers now training and coaching in San Diego, Konstantin Lokhanov, 24, is a former son-in-law of the president of Russia’s Olympic Committee and the ex-husband of a two-time Russian Olympic fencing gold medalist. Teenager Knighton, who took bronze at last year's World Championships, finished second in 14.85 in the inaugural edition of the tournament in Atlanta, Georgia. Third-placed Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya clocked a time of 14.89 seconds to better Namibian Frankie Fredericks's mark of 14.99 and set a new African record, adding to his African men's 100m record. Earlier on Saturday, United States' Olympic silver medallist Kendra Harrison finished second in the women's 100m hurdles behind Tia Jones. This year's world championships are scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary from Aug. 19-27.
Chesterman told the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) annual general meeting national sporting bodies were already financially stretched and that the groundwork for Brisbane success needed to be laid now. "It is clearly understood that a successful home Games requires a successful home team. But the clock is ticking and the strain within the system is showing," the AOC chairman said. "We come off a hugely successful Tokyo Games, but that is nearly two years ago, and the system that helped to produce those performances is understandably struggling. "Results also don't come at the flick of a switch, so if Australia is to have a successful team in Brisbane 2032, the system, the people, that took us to that success in Tokyo need nurturing now."
But organisers are planning changes to the traditional months-long relay across the host nation to make it more environmentally friendly and sustainable. There will also be far fewer torches than the several thousand usually produced for an Olympic relay by host cities, the source close to the torch lighting and relay planning process told Reuters. "The organisers are planning not to use individual torches for each of the runners," the source said. REUTERS/Gonzalo FuentesThe relay in the host country starts after the torch-lighting ceremony in Greece's Olympia, the site of the ancient Games. Organisers did not comment on the number of torches to be produced, saying it was still "a work in progress."
