(AP) — Tennessee's decades-old aggravated prostitution statute violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday after an investigation, warning that the state could face a lawsuit if officials don't immediately cease enforcement. LGBTQ+ and civil rights advocates have long criticized the measure as discriminatory, making it almost impossible to find housing and employment due to the restrictions for violent sex offenders. The DOJ letter details several of the struggles of those with aggravated prostitution convictions. A lifetime sex offender registration can stop people from visiting with their grandchildren, revoke job offers, and severely limit housing options. Plaintiffs who had filed a lawsuit seeking to block the aggravated prostitution law in October said the DOJ's letter only further supports their efforts.

(AP) — A ransomware attack has prompted a health care chain that operates 30 hospitals in six states to divert patients from at least some of its emergency rooms to other hospitals, while putting certain elective procedures on pause, the company announced. All of its hospitals are continuing to provide medical screenings and stabilizing care to patients arriving at emergency rooms, the company said. Ransomware criminals do not usually admit to an attack unless the victim refuses to pay. Education was the sector most likely to be hit, with attack saturation at 80%. The worker pulled a gun on Murphy, who then ran inside a nearby deli, Flowers said. The body camera footage shows officer Adam Claiborne opening the door of the deli and say “hey” at Murphy, who is behind the counter. Murphy then turns and charges at the officer with knives in both hands above his head. The officer, armored car worker and six employees in the deli were not injured, Flowers said.

They arrested 29-year-old Shaquille Taylor after surveillance video and witness statements pointed to him as the shooter. The investigation showed Taylor was shooting at a car while Ludwig was walking in a park on the opposite side of the street, according to police. (AP) — Nashville Police Chief John Drake says he's “disturbed” over the unauthorized release of writings from the shooter who killed six people, including three children, at The Covenant School in March. Earlier Monday, conservative commentator Steven Crowder released what he said were three images of Audrey Hale’s writings from the day of the March 27 shooting. The news quickly sparked calls for an investigation as local and state leaders initially declined to verify the authenticity of the writings. Because of the lawsuits, police have since said they would await the direction of the court on whether to release Hale’s writings. Bill Lee said he has been “calling for clarity” around the Covenant shooter's writings for months, saying in a statement that he's been “frustrated” by the lack of transparency.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A judge has set an August trial date for four former Memphis police officers charged in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols after a traffic stop in January. During a short hearing on Monday, Shelby County Criminal Court Judge James Jones Jr. announced the Aug. 12 trial date in the cases of Emmitt Martin, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith. A fifth officer charged in the case, Desmond Mills Jr., pleaded guilty last week to federal charges of excessive force and obstruction of justice. The five former officers who were charged also are Black. The federal trial date for the four other officers is May 6.

Authorities have not disclosed any of Hale's journals or writings that were collected after the March 27 shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville. Police then reversed course, saying that because of the lawsuits they would await the direction of the court on whether to release Hale’s writings. “I am deeply concerned with the safety, security, and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillians who are grieving," O’Connell said. Attorneys representing families with the Covenant School have repeatedly said they have not seen Hale's writings. Authorities’ refusal to release Hale’s writings has fueled further speculation and conspiracy theories about what they might reveal about Hale’s motive or influences.
