Prescriptions for ketamine have soared in recent years, driven by for-profit clinics and telehealth services offering the medication as a treatment for pain, depression, anxiety and other conditions. With its recent adoption for pain, patients are increasingly encountering those same effects. Ketamine targets a brain chemical messenger called glutamate, which is thought to play a role in both pain and depression. “We want patients to disassociate or feel separate from their pain, depression or anxiety,” said Dr. David Mahjoubi, owner of Ketamine Healing Clinic in Los Angeles. But the experts found “weak or no evidence” for ketamine in many more conditions, including back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia and cancer pain.

A gamer plays a GeForce NOW game inside a pop-up converted phone box powered by 5G. Photo: Anthony Devlin/Zuma PressNetwork carriers, looking to build new business around 5G, are exploring nascent technology that would allow them to better and more quickly deliver certain apps and services on their network—but this technology, known as network slicing, could potentially run afoul of net-neutrality regulations. In the current model, all data traffic from phones is typically funneled through the same network. Carriers are able to prioritize the voice calls that they handle on that network, but they rarely have visibility into what else users are doing through other apps. In other words, someone using a videoconferencing telehealth app has no priority over someone scrolling social media or streaming video—despite the fact that faster delivery is much more critical for that service, said Chris Sambar , head of network at AT&T .

Sequence gives subscribers access to GLP-1 medications such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic. Schenk said the concern about the drop in WW's average revenue per user "seems overblown" and has created a buying opportunity for the stock. Stabilizing core business WW has been focused on stabilizing its core weight loss business. Both developments are a positive for WW's Sequence business. Schenk estimates that around 6 million current or lapsed WW subscribers would qualify for treatment with obesity medication.

New York CNN —As prescriptions for weight-loss and diabetes drugs skyrocket, so too has revenue for drugmakers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. On Thursday, Novo Nordisk, the Denmark-based company behind Ozempic and Wegovy, reported a 29% increase in sales to $8.4 billion for the third quarter. The pharmaceutical companies are two of the biggest beneficiaries of the recent weight-loss drug frenzy, with Novo Nordisk catapulting to Europe’s most valuable company in September. Novo Nordisk reported that its obesity care sales grew 174% in the first nine months of 2023, mainly driven by US demand. The success of Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly’s drugs has inspired other companies to dive into the prescription weight-loss business, including WeightWatchers, now known as WW International.

Christina started taking Wegovy in September 2021 after getting a prescription through Calibrate, a startup that promises science-backed help with weight loss. She never received medication through Calibrate again, and she's since gained back all the weight she lost. Calibrate says its goal for Masters patients is to get them off weight-loss medications and help them maintain the weight loss they achieved. A former employee on Calibrate's clinical team said the startup allocated fewer doctors to second-year patients because those patients historically required less help from Calibrate. At least four second-year patients Insider spoke with said they sought refunds from Calibrate after they didn't receive the services they paid for.

The 13-year-old company has introduced a free service called DocDefender that can scrub a physician's personal contact information from the internet. The technology scans dozens of the most common websites where a doctor's information might reside and automatically initiates the removal process. Two months after the workshopping event, Doximity conducted a survey of more than 2,000 doctors and found that 85% of them worry about whether patients will access their personal information online. The service will be available to all doctors on Doximity starting Wednesday, and will expand to nurse practitioners and others over time. 'Opportunity to think very long term' In addition to reaching more than 80% of U.S. doctors, Doximity says it's also used by 50% of nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

The startup had secured at least one big contract, with Apple, according to three former Spora employees and another source close to Spora. Four of them told Insider they either no longer worked with Spora or hadn't seen Spora patients in a year. Two doctors listed on Spora's website as "featured Spora providers" also told Insider that they no longer worked for the startup. Another former clinician said she only ever treated a handful of Spora patients.

Amazon is considering an expansion into veterinary telehealth in its latest bid to compete with Walmart , which began offering the service to Walmart+ subscribers earlier this year, people familiar with the matter told CNBC. Veterinary telehealth allows pet parents to have virtual appointments with veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Earlier this year, Walmart signed a deal with veterinary telehealth provider Pawp to offer Walmart+ subscribers free access to the startup's membership for a year. Amazon could turn to Pawp to fuel a potential pet telehealth offering in time for the holiday season because Pawp has already proven it can scale with a large retailer. Amazon could also partner with one of the dozens of other pet telehealth startups on the market or build its own practice, which is what Chewy did when it began offering the service during the Covid pandemic.

Access to abortion medication is available via telehealth. For those who need out-of-state care, however, the cost of abortion may be as high as $30,000. While costs have increased in places with bans, states like California and New York allow telehealth appointments for medication abortion, reducing travel time and the cost of abortion care. "What would have been a cost of $5,000 turned into $10,000 just for abortion care because it had to be in a hospital," she says. As Aki's story points out, that type of rationale from larger companies has created an opportunity for those willing to support remote work. That has led to speculation on social media that perhaps rapid tests have lost their ability to detect some of the newer coronavirus variants. “To date, the performance of currently marketed COVID-19 tests has not been adversely impacted by any new variants,” Merchak said in a statement. “That’s why the repeat testing 48 hours is so important.”Why rapid tests are often negative in kidsAnother real-world study of rapid tests identified another reason the tests sometimes don’t work well: operator error. In this study, negative rapid tests correctly meant that a child was healthy only 38% of the time. PCR tests showed that the infected kids had viral loads that should have been high enough to turn positive on rapid tests.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A new Florida law restricting health care for transgender people can still be applied to adults while it is being challenged in court, a federal judge ruled Monday. The law signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in May bans any transgender treatment for minors and requires transgender adults give consent to treatment in person and with a physician present. Florida is one of 22 states to adopt a law in the last few years banning gender-affirming care for children. But unlike others, the one signed by DeSantis, a candidate for president, also has provisions aimed at care for transgender adults.
