A French Festival Focuses (Timidly) on English
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( Laura Cappelle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As soon as the Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues took over at the Avignon Festival, France’s biggest theater event, he announced a symbolic move: Under his direction, there would be a special focus on a different language every year, starting, this summer, with English. There was wincing from some quarters: To many in France, English is already far too culturally dominant. Of several dozen productions in the official lineup of this year’s festival, which runs through July 25, only six plays are predominantly in English. So far, however, the most intriguing discovery has been the sole American entry, “Baldwin and Buckley at Cambridge,” from Elevator Repair Service. From tables on opposite sides of the stage, Greig Sargeant (Baldwin) and Ben Williams (Buckley) spar with effective solemnity.

Americans feel bad about the economy, even though data shows a booming labor market. The recovery from the pandemic recession reset everyone's expectations about what a good economy looks like. Americans are feeling bad about the economy, and some of that is likely due to inflation eating at their budgets. Consumer confidence is still low, and, as JPMorgan Asset Management chief global strategist David Kelly writes, Americans feel an "unreasonable level of gloom." In short, the things that used to make Americans feel good or bad about the economy aren't as consequential anymore.

Wall Street praised Constellation Brands (STZ) in a series of price target hikes to start the new week and quarter. We boosted our Club price target on Constellation on Friday to $270 per share from $260. BMO Capital increased price target to $290 from $263 Wells Fargo increased price target to $280 from $275 Bernstein increased price target to $287 from $280 JPMorgan raised price target to $276 from $273 Goldman Sachs raised price target to $275 from $264 Wedbush increased price target to $275 to $270 TD Cowen increased price target to $240 from $220 Truist raised price target to $240 from $220 The common theme, as we also pointed out, is the company's unrelenting beer momentum as the main factor that should drive the company's future growth. Constellation delivered resilient beer depletions, also known as the number of cases that are sold to retailers by a distributor. We were glad to see Wall Street analysts follow our price target increase.

You don't get the best first-half Nasdaq rally in 40 years simply because the Federal Reserve did this, or the yield curve in the bond market did that. It was almost as if it was prosaic to seek profits, like, "How dare you defy the teachings of the yield curve, you foolish soon-to-be- broke apostate." It was the second move, the second week of March, that told the second tale of the first half: the fall of Silicon Valley Bank. Here we had an out-of-nowhere collapse of a well-known seemingly well-run bank that ran afoul, again, of the yield curve. No company could rival Club stocks Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft and Meta Platforms (META) — nice metamorphous there and Tesla , not a Club name.

Constellation Brands (STZ) delivered an earnings beat Friday, along with a compelling outlook that prompted us to raise our price target on shares of the Corona brewer. Excluding equity losses from Constellation's stake in cannabis company Canopy , adjusted earnings came in at $3.04 per share. Bottom line Management's full-year guidance — like the headline sales and earnings numbers — was better than the estimates from Wall Street. Company results Beer sales of $2.1 billion, up 11% year over year, were better than analysts' expectations of $2.07 billion. Toyota shareholders make 15% the new win-win

Both Glass Lewis and ISS reckon there aren’t enough properly independent directors on the board, even though Toyota complies with the requirements laid down by the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Yet ISS held back from advising shareholders vote against them because it would risk “increasing management dominance of the board”. Toyota is a laggard on both and is now under pressure to get powerful investors back onside. CONTEXT NEWSMore than 15% of voting shareholders were against reappointing Chairman Akio Toyoda to Toyota Motor’s board at its annual meeting on June 14, the Japanese carmaker said on June 15. About 15% of shareholders who voted supported a resolution asking the company to issue an annual review of its climate lobbying activities.

'Jurassic Park' still has bite at 30, and here's why

CNN —It’s been 30 years since Steven Spielberg’s dinosaurs stampeded across the screen in the first “Jurassic Park,” but it feels more recent. Despite hitting an 18-month low of 4.70% in April, analysts do not expect India's inflation to fall to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 4% medium-term target in a sustainable manner for some time. India has raised rates by 250 basis points (bps) since May 2022, but surprised analysts in April by keeping them unchanged. India's hold on rates contrasts with recent central bank actions elsewhere. "Our goal is to achieve the inflation target of 4% and keeping inflation within the comfort band of 2-6% is not enough," Das said. Das said that the central bank would remain "nimble" with its liquidity operations amid spikes in overnight rates despite surplus liquidity in the banking system.

The twice Roland Garros champion could not find a weakness in the 11th-seeded Khachanov's serve at first, but once he took the second set tiebreak there was no looking back for the Serbian. Djokovic, however, was not completely happy with his performance but knew victory would not come easy. He has a big serve but maybe doesn't move as well so I tried to expose him and played unpredictable. There were no break points in the second set but Khachanov started to struggle and paid for his efforts, failing to score a point in the tiebreak as Djokovic levelled the contest. Djokovic got the early break thanks to a netcord in the third and stole Khachanov's serve again to move one set from victory with apparent ease.

Chuck Todd is stepping down from ‘Meet the Press’

New York CNN —Chuck Todd, the longtime host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” is stepping down from his role, he shared with the audience on Sunday. “When I took over ‘Meet the Press,’ it was a Sunday show that had a lot of people questioning whether it still could have a place in the modern media space,” Todd said on the show. But it’s important media leaders do not “overstay their welcome,” Todd said on the show. “I’ve let work consume me for nearly 30 years,” Todd said. “But it doesn’t mean sticking your head in the sand either; if you ignore reality, you’ll miss the biggest story,” Todd said.

Chuck Todd to Leave ‘Meet the Press’

Chuck Todd said on Sunday that he was stepping down from NBC’s “Meet the Press” after nine years in the moderator’s chair and would be succeeded by the network’s chief White House correspondent, Kristen Welker. In remarks at the conclusion of the show on Sunday, Mr. Todd, 50, said he was conscious that many leaders “overstay their welcome” and that he’d rather leave “a little bit too soon than stay a tad too long.”“I’ve let work consume me for nearly 30 years,” Mr. Todd said, according to a copy of his prepared remarks. “I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up before 5 or 6 a.m., and as I’ve watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late, I promised my family I wouldn’t do that.”Mr. Todd, a longtime political journalist in Washington, started as moderator of “Meet the Press” in 2014. He has recently interviewed newsmakers including former Vice President Mike Pence, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Republican presidential aspirant Vivek Ramaswamy and Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the House minority leader.

Kishida has vowed to double childcare spending over the next three years in a bid to help reverse the country's dwindling birth rate. The government had previously estimated that it needed to secure around 3 trillion yen per year to cover the expansion of childcare allowances and other related benefits. Kishida unveiled the increased size of spending at a meeting of ministers, including Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki, Goto said. The economy minister also attended the meeting. "Prime Minister Kishida told us to consider expanding childcare measures by around 3.5 trillion yen in the process of compiling the annual budget," Goto told reporters.

It said searches for alternative weddings – especially underwater weddings – have jumped 305% on its platform. “Though slightly challenging logistically, it should be interesting to see the data for underwater weddings in 2023,” she said. “Wedding photographer Kimber Greenwood, who specializes in underwater wedding photography, is booked to photograph 20 of them this year. The wedding industry should enjoy the recovery, because it may not last.

S&P 500 futures rose 0.3% while Nasdaq futures firmed 0.5%. In Asia, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) rose 0.2%, with falls in Chinese and Hong Kong shares offsetting gains seen elsewhere. U.S. shares rallied at the end of last week on hopes of a debt ceiling deal and bets on artificial intelligence firms. Elsewhere in the currency markets, the dollar index - a measure of the greenback against its major peers - was a touch lower at 104.17 as risk-sensitive currencies staged a rebound.

Here are stocks that win when inflation slows
  + stars: | 2023-05-10 | by ( Yun Li | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Inflation moderated a tad in April, and so stocks that win historically when inflation eases could be big winners ahead if that trend continues. The easing in inflation could give a boost to stocks that have historically tracked the opposite direction of rising prices, according to Bank of America analysis. The Wall Street firm created an "Anti-Inflation" screen with S & P 500 companies whose relative performance has a strong negative relationship — or beta — with inflation. Amazon is on the top of the list with the strongest negative relationship to inflation. Consumer staples should also benefit from easing inflation, including Clorox and Kroger , which have historically moved in opposite direction to inflation.
Oil-and-gas producer Coterra Energy (CTRA) on Thursday delivered a top-and -bottom-line beat for the first quarter, while reiterating its commitment to return at least half of its free cash flow to shareholders like us. Free cash flow is a particularly important metric for Coterra because the company's management remains committed to returning at least 50% to shareholders through a base dividend and share repurchases. Capital allocation Coterra said it plans to return a total of $420 million to shareholders, representing about 76% of its free cash flow in the first quarter. Notably, Coterra lowered its full-year expectation for free cash flow by $300 million, largely due to a $400 million reduction in its forecast for operating cash flow. Sumitomo triples down on Jefferies at right time

MELBOURNE, April 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Jun Ohta may have preferred to catch a bigger Wall Street fish. But the CEO of Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316.T) is expanding his relationship with relative minnow Jefferies (JEF.N) at an opportune moment. The $56 billion SMFG also intends to increase its ownership of the $7.6 billion company run by Richard Handler to 15% by purchasing ordinary shares that it will convert into preferred stock. Slumping deal flow after what Jefferies called an “off-the-charts” 2021 prompted its earnings to more than halve last year. SMFG will buy common stock on the open market and then convert it into non-voting preferred stock.
At the end of the episode, Sam takes his father to see the fractured restaurant, only to find his teammates hard at work repairing it. Keeley and JackPresumably having Aurora-Borealised to their hearts’ content last episode, Keeley and Jack mostly limit themselves to coffee this time around, even if those coffees involve signed Jane Austen first editions and jewelry-filled pastry. In between, Keeley — who’d confided to Jack her love of daisies — returns to an office overflowing with them. (Also, is it just me or is it a tad stalker-y for Jack to secretly pay for Keeley and Rebecca’s dinner?)
Kirin has offered A$95 cash per Blackmores share, a 23.7% premium to the stock's last close, and a tad higher than its 22.4% jump in morning trade. Before the Kirin deal, its shares had been trading at one-third of their value at the height of the daigou craze in 2016. The board of Blackmores has unanimously recommended shareholders support the deal, with top shareholder and former chairman Marcus Blackmore also agreeing to vote in favour. Blackmores' share price rose as much as 22.4% to A$94, its highest since December 2021. Blackmores shareholders will be able to vote on the offer at a shareholder meeting in July and the companies expect the deal to close in early August.
Club holding Morgan Stanley (MS) reported better-than-expected first-quarter results on Wednesday, even as the stock came under pressure due to rising expenses. Morgan Stanley stock initially tumbled nearly 4%, before reversing some of those losses to rise just under 1% in afternoon trading Wednesday, to about $90.50 a share. Bottom line An increase in provisions for credit losses and higher-than-expected compensation expenses weighed on shares early in Wednesday's session — but Morgan Stanley, nonetheless, reported a solid first quarter. Despite a difficult operating environment, Morgan Stanley remains a best-in-class investment bank. The Morgan Stanley headquarters building is seen on January 17, 2023 in New York City.
