Manchester United owners consider selling club
  + stars: | 2022-11-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
The owners are under pressure with United sitting fifth in the Premier League halfway through the season, which has been suspended because of the current Qatar World Cup. Manchester United shares jumped as much as 20% after Sky News first reported on the sale process, giving the club a market capitalisation of $2.6 billion. The Raine Group is acting as financial adviser and Latham & Watkins LLP is the legal adviser to Manchester United. It was the first Premier League match to be postponed because of a protest. United finished sixth last season in their worst Premier League campaign in terms of points earned, failing to qualify for the lucrative European Champions League competition.
Chelsea go top of WSL, Arsenal lose to Man United
  + stars: | 2022-11-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Chelsea scored three times in the first half as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 to go top of the Women's Super League on Sunday, making the most of Arsenal's shock defeat by Manchester United. Sam Kerr opened the scoring for Chelsea before Erin Cuthbert celebrated her contract extension with a superb goal, and Guro Reiten added a third from the penalty spot to send the Blues top on 21 points from eight games. Arsenal ended the weekend in second place on 18 points, ahead of United on goal difference, and both teams have a game in hand over Chelsea. Manchester City, who beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday, are fourth on 15 points, three ahead of Aston Villa, who coasted to a 3-1 win over Reading on Sunday thanks to a Rachel Daly hat-trick. The men’s team sits atop the English Premier League, with a manager full of ideas and a fearless new generation breaking through into the first team. Arteta’s Arsenal now leads Manchester City in the Premier League – a team that is touted for greatness – and shows very little signs of slowing down. He took his shirt off, swore at the Arsenal fans and stormed down the tunnel in what looked to be his last act as a player for the club. The realistic expectation, then, is not necessarily to win the Premier League title but to cement itself back in the Champions League. The Premier League will pause for over a month as many of Arsenal’s players will travel to the Gulf nation to join their respective teams.
Another Champions League defeat, this time a 4-3 loss away to Benfica, ensured Juventus’ exit from the competition at the group stage for the first time in nine years. Juventus faces the prospect of missing out on next season's Champions League. There is no denying the current side is considerably weaker than the Juve teams of recent years, but eighth in Serie A and Champions League misery are still well below this season’s expectations. Samuel Iling-Junior was a bright spark in Juventus' defeat. Juventus’ season is by no means over, but three huge games in the next week against Lecce, PSG and Inter Milan could go a long way to defining its outcome.
Sunday's results leave nothing between Arsenal and United in the early going, with the two sides tied on 12 points and having scored 11 goals scored while conceding none. Waelti opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 15th minute, snapping up a clearance from a corner and belting it into the net, and Norway international Maanum made it 2-0 seven minutes later with a powerful run and finish. In Sunday's late game, champions Chelsea had to battle hard on a sodden pitch but eventually won 2-0 away at Brighton & Hove Albion to stay third, level with the leaders on points but behind on goal difference and having played a game more. Also on Saturday, Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw scored either side of the break to help Manchester City to a comfortable 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. MUNICH, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Bernd Reichart, CEO of the company backing a proposed Super League, said on Wednesday that European football is losing its leading role in world sport and that clubs are not maximising their potential under the current system. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were amongst 12 clubs to announce a breakaway Super League in April 2021 but after a hostile reaction from across the game and from fans and governments alike the move promptly collapsed. One aspect of the initial Super League proposition which angered fans was that it was a closed competition for Europe's elite clubs, but Reichart said that was no longer the case. U.S. investment bank JP Morgan had been set to finance the Super League in 2021 but Reichart said it will now be "starting from scratch". Reichart has also written to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin seeking a meeting to discuss issues related to the Super League, according to a letter obtained by Reuters.
All available tickets for the 90,000-capacity stadium were snapped up 15 minutes after going on sale, the U.K.'s fastest-ever sellout for the women's game. That trend has continued with the start of the 2022-23 season of the Women's Super League, the top tier of women's soccer in England. More money, more qualityWomen were banned from playing on Football Association grounds until 1971, and there wasn't a fully professional women's league until 2018. Major publishers like BBC Sport have also made moves to include the women's game more prominently in coverage. "Unbundling would attract more brands who see the women's game as their marketing focus and not just an add-on," Baroni said.
LONDON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Chelsea bounced back from an opening-day loss to beat Manchester City 2-0 in the Women's Super League on Sunday, while on Saturday Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur set a new WSL attendance record as 47,367 watched the Gunners take a comfortable 4-0 win. That crowd figure was dwarfed at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday as Arsenal and Spurs clashed, with Vivianne Miedema scoring twice as the Gunners registered their second straight 4-0 league win to top the standings. They are level on six points with Arsenal and Aston Villa, who continued their good start to the season by beating Leicester City 2-0. Sept 24 (Reuters) - Vivianne Miedema scored twice in Arsenal's commanding 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in front of a Women's Super League record crowd of 47,367 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Register"We played really well today, we were patient and compact. Hopefully this is just the beginning," said Mead, who received a standing ovation on her 100th WSL appearance. Miedema doubled Arsenal's lead six minutes before the break, slotting past goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer with ease after Spurs carelessly gave away possession deep inside their own half. Arsenal, who thrashed Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 last weekend, have now won their last 10 WSL games - scoring 39 times and conceding twice - and kept a league record eight consecutive clean sheets.
