But it’s evidence of one of the central truths of our time, and one that is becoming more and more apparent every day: We have built our world for a climate that no longer exists. But less than two months earlier, a sudden windstorm in the city blacked out electricity for more than a million people. How many blackouts will it take before we realize today’s power grid was built for yesterday’s climate? One clear example: the incredible decline in the cost of renewable power in recent years. In virtually every part of the world, electricity generated by renewable power is cheaper than electricity generated by fossil fuels.

Brent crude futures inched up 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $86.65 a barrel as at 0042 GMT after closing down 89 cents on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $83.08 a barrel, down 8 cents, after settling down 72 cents in the previous session. Lower interest rates can boost economic activity and increase crude oil demand. Investors were also watching for any impact from elections in the UK, France and Iran last week on geopolitics and energy policies.

CNN —Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with stronger gusts, according to a 5 p.m. EST update from the National Hurricane Center. That this formed so early in the season – and in this part of the Atlantic – is a sign of the hyperactive hurricane season to come, according to research from Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. Normally, ocean temperatures aren’t warm enough in this region in June and July to help tropical systems thrive. That’s hardly the case this year, and one of the reasons behind record-high hurricane season forecasts over the past few months.
