Twenty men and women in military fatigues huddled around a 19th-century painting of a fiery sunset at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a recent Saturday afternoon. They leaned toward the vivid picture of the Ukrainian wilderness as their tour guide spoke. The program was announced three years ago but interrupted by Covid and bureaucratic hurdles. Blake Ruehrwein, an Air Force veteran who also runs education and outreach at the Naval War College Museum in Newport, R.I., was instructing a new unit learning the ropes from some of the world’s top art experts. “Take what you learn from here and apply it,” he told the officers attending the museum workshop in early June.

The Latest:About 10 percent of offers to New York City’s most elite public high schools went to Black and Latino students this year, education officials announced on Thursday, in a school system where they make up more than two-thirds of the student population overall. The numbers — which have remained stubbornly low for years — placed a fresh spotlight on racial and ethnic disparities in the nation’s largest school system. At Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, the most selective of the city’s so-called specialized schools, seven of the 762 offers made went to Black students, down from 11 last year and eight in 2021. Gaps at many of the other schools were also stark: Out of 287 offers made at Staten Island Technical High School, for example, two Black students were accepted — up from zero last year — along with seven Latino students. About 26,000 eighth graders took the test last fall, and just under 4,000 were offered seats.

The Alice Austen House on Staten Island celebrates the life of the trailblazing photographer Alice Austen, who lived there in the mid-19th and early-20th centuries. Amid its rolling, verdant grounds and vine-covered porch, there’s also a new initiative in the works: the Queer Ecologies Garden Project. for this story, and who consulted on creating the garden. Prefer and Victoria Munro, the executive director of the Alice Austen House, aim to celebrate this widespread gender fluidity of the natural world while focusing on plants that are particularly loud and proud in their functions, or are culturally associated with the L.G.B.T.Q. “It sort of challenges the notion that being queer is a choice,” said Ms. Munro of the project.

Robert S. CarrollStaten IslandTo the Editor:Once again, we have been subjected to last-minute brinkmanship in the debt limit drama series that never seems to end. Many have argued for the elimination of the debt limit. Why not place a cap on the amount of the debt limit increase? Anything above that would require congressional approval and would have to be considered at the time of approving the budget. About two hours after Century 21 reopened as Century 21 NYC in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday, the store’s point-of-sale system crashed. “This goes to show you that they should have never went out of business,” said Denise Danny, 58, from Staten Island. Ms. Danny, who had a shopping cart full of clothes, was standing in a line that had formed at a register on the department store’s second floor. At the time, Century 21 had 13 locations in four states. But arguably, none was as popular as its flagship location on Cortlandt Street in the Financial District, which was opened in 1961 by two cousins, Al Gindi and Samuel Gindi, who was known as Sonny.
"Plaintiff took a break from his work, walked up to Defendant Giuliani, patted or tapped him on the back, said 'what's up scumbag,' and walked away." Giuliani told police officers who arrived at the store that he wanted Gill to be arrested. He told police officers that Gill "hit" him and that he was in pain, according to the lawsuit. A security camera video shows that Gill patted Giuliani on the back. This is the second lawsuit filed against Giuliani this week.
The Tiny Craft Mapping Superstorms at Sea Shortly after dawn on Sept. 30, 2021, Richard Jenkins watched a Category 4 hurricane overrun his life’s work. That August, a sister ship, SD 1031, successfully entered Tropical Storm Henri, but only in its early stages. Hurricane research, modeling and forecasting requires many terabytes of data for every square mile the storm passes through, including vitally important sea-level data from inside a storm. The next day, the depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and officially given the name Sam. And four months later, Tropical Storm Megi killed more than 150, wiped out several villages with landslides and displaced more than a million people.
Amazon Labor Union vice president Derrick Palmer was charged with two counts of assault last year. The ALU has struggled with internal tensions after it led the first successful Amazon union drive. The union's president, Chris Smalls, was seen fighting another employee in December. Amazon Labor Union president Chris Smalls sent an email to the union members late Monday: "Dear Brothers & Sisters, Amazon Labor Union, Vice President Derrick Palmer has submitted his resignation as Vice President of ALU effective immediately. Due to the matter being before the court the Amazon Labor Union has no comment at this time."

Now, the owners of many of those small businesses, many of whom did not qualify for pandemic-era public loans and grants, worry that sharp rent increases and a lack of protections for commercial tenants could shut down their stores, just as the economy is gaining momentum. These businesses helped fuel the city’s recovery while the rest of the economy faltered, and many store owners say they fear they will be left out of the resurgence. At risk, they say, is the soul of the city: the minority- and immigrant-owned businesses that create a path to the middle class and provide hard-to-find goods and services in ethnic enclaves. “For the first time in New York City history, their existence is being threatened,” said Annetta Seecharran, the executive director of Chhaya, a nonprofit community development group. In districts where the rent rose, people of color made up 72 percent of the population, the analysis showed, raising concerns about displacement and gentrification.
While Hollywood deals with the first TV and movie writers’ strike in 15 years, the wealth of content that we have available to us is a good reminder of the creativity those writers have put into making the shows and movies we love. Something to sip on…Corey Mylchreest as Young King George, India Amarteifio as Young Queen Charlotte in episode 101 of "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." Liam Daniel/NetflixOne of the reasons the strike is even happening is because streaming has changed the entertainment industry so much that writers say their wages are being adversely affected through shorter seasons and changing distribution models. Those individuals can’t work – and some of our favorite shows will be delayed – unless writers and studios reach a new agreement soon. In the meantime, catch up on some brilliant shows you’ve missed.
CNN —Give Pete Davidson a bit of credit for making himself the least interesting part of a series about being Pete Davidson. Having already played a version of himself in the Peacock movie “The King of Staten Island,” Davidson certainly doesn’t seem overly concerned about stretching his acting chops. Davidson is introduced Google-ing himself, chafing at living in the public eye while residing (uncomfortably at times, as an early sequence demonstrates) with his mom. “Bupkis” is at times very funny, but when it comes to getting to know more about Pete Davidson, the show’s admirable qualities are more in spite of that than because of it. “Bupkis” premieres May 4 on Peacock.
Police bodycam video shows Derrick Palmer, the vice president of the Amazon Labor Union, admitting to strangling his girlfriend. The second-highest-ranking official in the Amazon Labor Union is facing felony charges over claims that he strangled his girlfriend last year, according to police records and body-cam video obtained by Insider. The charges against Palmer are the latest potentially damaging revelation about the leadership of the Amazon Labor Union, the only union to successfully organize an Amazon facility. Palmer, left, and Amazon Labor Union president Chris Smalls arrive at an Ebony magazine gala in October 2022. Historically, union officers removed under the law have been convicted of fraud, embezzlement, or extortion, Logan said.

Half a year with the street counselors who dispense free sneakers, monthly injections and gentle encouragement to some of the city’s most vulnerable and volatile residents. It had taken their team almost five months just to track down the 43-year-old homeless woman, chasing leads from the police and other homeless people. On this afternoon last August, they were trying to help her find the holy grail: an apartment where someone with a severe mental illness could build a stable life. The woman, M, flashed them a big smile. In her black baseball cap, long blond wig, oversize sunglasses and about 20 bracelets, she looked like a misplaced movie star.

A new study by RentCafe ranked the popularity of the 150 largest U.S. markets by tracking four metrics in each: the availability of apartments, listing views, listings saved as favorites, and saved personalized searches. Kansas City, Mo., landed in second place, followed by Albuquerque. Though scattered around the country, these markets share important traits — they’re relatively inexpensive and have healthy economies, according to the report. Next up was Detroit, which trailed only Kansas City among Midwest markets. Listings saved as favorites in the Motor City grew by more than 400 percent over a year, and saved searches grew by 150 percent — signs of its revival.
[1/2] Feb 9, 2023; Phoenix, Arizona, US; Sports commentator Rich Eisen poses for a photo on the red carpet before the NFL Honors award show at Symphony Hall. “I hung up the phone and became the owner of my own business,” Eisen recalls about buying back his show from DirecTV, which was shuttering its Audience Network. This year’s edition will kick off April 27 in Kansas City, Missouri, and Eisen will be assuming hosting duties once again. But when he thinks about his financial life, Eisen does not focus much on areas like stock picking. When I first got that call, I didn’t have the first clue about how to run a business," Eisen says.
But Zeldin endorsed Trump on Monday while DeSantis was in Japan. This comes after Zeldin praised DeSantis in February at a law-enforcement event. Asked during that trip about slipping in the polls against Trump, DeSantis replied, "I'm not a candidate, so we'll see if and when that changes." Aside from sagging poll numbers in a hypothetical primary against Trump, DeSantis has been losing support among members of his own party. Trump only has ground to lose on endorsements while Governor DeSantis, who isn't even an announced candidate, continues to have a growing base of support."
Amazon delivery drivers at one of the company's California facilities joined the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union said Monday, in a win for labor organizers that have long sought to gain a foothold at the e-retailer. "We want fair pay and safe jobs, to be able to provide food for our families," said Rajpal Singh, an Amazon delivery driver at the Palmdale facility, in a statement. Randy Korgan, director of the Teamsters' Amazon division, said the union is "coordinating nationwide" with Amazon workers. So far, only one Amazon warehouse in the U.S. has voted to join a union. Amazon Labor Union's president, Chris Smalls, has registered a new nonprofit. Chris Smalls, the president of Amazon's labor union, has registered a new nonprofit, signaling that he may be turning his attention to projects beyond the unionizing effort that's turned him into a national labor figure. Smalls' leadership of the Amazon Labor Union has been called into question in recent months, amid stalled organizing momentum and election losses at two other facilities. In early December, Smalls was caught on camera fighting a former Amazon Labor Union organizer who had been threatening him after becoming particularly upset about Smalls' growing fame. Although the new group does intend to raise funds for the Amazon Labor Union, according to its certificate of incorporation, it also has bigger ambitions beyond Amazon.
On the night of December 5, the president of the Amazon Labor Union pummeled another union member. Some longtime Amazon Labor Union organizers decided to begin organizing on their own, without Smalls. All three said they believe in Smalls' mission and support the goals of the Amazon Labor Union, but worry about Smalls' ability to lead. Amazon Labor Union members consoled each other after the union lost the vote at its second warehouse, LDJ5, last April. One purpose of the organization appears to be to raise funds for the Amazon Labor Union, according to its certificate of incorporation.
