Read previewWhen you put the Harris-Walz campaign's media strategy side-by-side with that of Trump-Vance, one major difference stands out: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are barely talking to the press. Both Donald Trump and JD Vance's many press interviews have sparked negative news cycles. Atkeson also gave the analogy that the effect of Harris' media strategy on voters is like what happens when a romantic relationship first begins. So the contrast could be something that doesn't look good optically for the Harris campaign." Though the Harris campaign did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, a spokesperson told The New York Times that more press interviews are coming.

This is an age group that may be particularly vulnerable if they haven’t received a whooping cough booster since childhood. The state has logged 111 whooping cough cases this year so far, compared with just 11 in 2023. Last weekend, Portland State University canceled a football game following a surge in whooping cough cases among players. The whooping cough can spread that bacteria through their coughs for a long time if not treated. “Those babies are coughing so much they can’t eat, they can’t drink, so they end up in the intensive care unit.”When to get whooping cough vaccines and boostersPregnant women are encouraged to get a whooping cough booster during their third trimester.

Polish American voters are having a moment. “The Polish American vote there is meaningful,” Jackson said. “A question I frequently get is whether there is even such a thing as a Polish American vote. The efforts by Harris and Trump show “the candidates are clearly making a play for the Polish American vote,” said Dominik Stecula, an assistant professor of communications at Ohio State University. Many Polish Americans do not speak Polish and have never been to Poland, and they long ago moved to the suburbs from the tightly packed Polish neighborhoods that once predominated.

CNN is reporting only a small portion of Robinson’s comments on the website given their graphic nature. Many of Robinson’s comments on Nude Africa stand in contrast to his public stances on issues such as abortion and transgender rights. I sat there for about an hour and watched as several girls came in and showered,” Robinson wrote on Nude Africa. Writing in a forum discussing Black Republicans in October 2010, Robinson stated unprovoked: “I’m a black NAZI!”That same month, Robinson wrote in another post that he supported the return of slavery. Robinson’s comments on Nude Africa often frequently contained derogatory and racial slurs directed at Black, Jewish and Muslim people.

That marks a real GDP growth rate of 51.1% between 2010 and 2021, meaning an economic contribution that's 2.7 times that of the non-Hispanic population. Despite those large figures, some economists think that U.S. Latinas could be contributing more to GDP than the report's figure. A growing forceWhen it comes to labor force participation, Latinas are outpacing other groups, the BofA report showed. Conversely, the non-Latino labor force growth rate was negative that year, meaning that more people left the labor force than entered it. North Carolina's Research Triangle is one of the fastest-growing areas in the U.S., with a population that's boomed by 5.6% since 2020 to 2.4 million people, according to Census data. The area, also known simply as "The Triangle," is anchored by Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill and their major universities: North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And in that 50 years, North Carolina has totally restructured its economy," said Michael Walden Reynolds, an economics professor at North Carolina State University. The Triangle region has about 4,000 tech and 600 life science companies, and more than 300 companies are headquartered in RTP alone, according to the Research Triangle Regional Partnership and Work In The Triangle. Bryan Kohberger, the man accused in the murders of four University of Idaho students, was transported by plane Sunday morning from the Idaho county where he was being jailed to another county where his trial will be held. Latah County District Judge John Judge had ruled in favor of lawyers for Kohberger, 29, who argued a trial in Latah County would be unfair because of the intense pretrial publicity creating a "mob mentality" against the defendant. "While the issue of extensive, sensationalized coverage is not unique to Latah County," Judge added, "it is potentially more impactful given the volume of coverage coupled with the smaller population." Despite the change, Latah County prosecutors and Kohberger's public defenders are expected to remain through the trial. Some of the victims' families have expressed frustration over the trial's delay and had pressed for the case to remain in Latah County so that its residents could represent the jury.

For the past year, student-athletes have been faced with an unsettling question: How much are their lives about to change? Seemingly overnight, the 109-year-old conference of a dozen schools, with decades of rivalries, became a conference of only two. “Why add even more stress?”Shannon Cunningham, a former member of the Arizona State University softball team, said the conference change shattered her dream of playing in the Pac-12. One coach in particular, University of Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz, made headlines last summer when he criticized realignment for not considering the impact on student-athletes. “Did we count the cost for the student-athletes involved in this decision?” asked Drinkwitz.

Swallowed eels escape via predator fish’s gills
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( Mindy Weisberger | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Dark sleeper fish (Odontobutis obscura) can gulp down young Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) whole, but the swallowed eels can wriggle back up through the digestive tract and out of the stomach, swimming to freedom through the bigger fish’s gills, scientists recently discovered. “Witnessing the eels’ desperate escape from the predator’s stomach to the gills was truly astonishing for us.”A Japanese eel exhibits circling behavior along a predator's stomach wall in this X-ray video footage. But while they observed swallowed eels wriggling tailfirst from dark sleepers’ gills, “we had no understanding of their escape routes and behavioral patterns during the escape because it occurred inside the predator’s body,” Hasegawa said via email. Once a predator swallowed an eel, the sated fish was quickly moved to a special tank where the X-ray video camera was ready to roll. On average, it took about 3 ½ minutes for a swallowed eel to reappear and swim away.

The trial of the man accused of murdering four University of Idaho students will be moved out of the county where the killings took place in late 2022, a judge ruled in a decision released Monday. Latah County District Judge John Judge heard arguments last month about whether the trial of Bryan Kohberger, tentatively set for next June, should be moved to Ada County, about 300 miles south and home to Idaho’s capital, Boise. Judge did not immediately specify the new location in granting a different venue, which he said was based on “presumed prejudice” if the trial remains in Latah County. A new judge is expected to be brought onto the case once it moves, although it’s unclear when the Idaho Supreme Court could decide on the judge and venue. Latah County prosecutors will remain on the case through the trial.

Not everyone who attempts suicide has a mental health conditionOne of many common myths about suicide is that only people with mental health conditions have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. Describing a suicide attempt as “successful” is also problematic, as taking one’s life is not a positive achievement. “Failed suicide attempt” can suggest that surviving isn’t the best outcome or that there’s something lacking in the character or willpower of the attempter. Given these factors, when referring to suicide, appropriate language includes “died by suicide,” “fatal suicide attempt,” “killed herself” or “took his own life,” experts said. Acceptable shorthand ways to communicate not dying from an attempt include “nonfatal suicide attempt” or simply “suicide attempt.”Using more compassionate language to discuss suicide can also improve empathy and strategies for reducing suicide risk, experts said.

Just weeks before a pregnant porbeagle shark was expected to give birth, one of the two tracker tags marine scientists had placed on the animal floated to the surface near Bermuda. Of 11 porbeagle sharks researchers tagged, eight were pregnant, including this one. Before this, researchers didn’t think it was even possible that porbeagle sharks could be preyed upon, she added. The team’s original goal was to trace pregnant porbeagle sharks throughout their pregnancy and figure out where the creatures typically go to give birth.
