Airbnb Details Road Map to Lower Cloud Costs
  + stars: | 2022-11-07 | by ( Belle Lin | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +4 min
PREVIEWMany companies that have shifted their enterprise-technology tools to the cloud in recent years are similarly seeking to reduce their cloud costs, especially in the market downturn. Corporate cloud spending will moderate from recent highs, analysts say, as companies seek more discipline in that spending. “That reduced a significant amount of our storage costs right off the bat,” Mr. Nagle said. Airbnb, one of Amazon’s largest cloud customers according to Amazon, also worked with the cloud provider to figure out what it was overpaying for. By putting its spending toward lower-cost cloud services it uses more often, Airbnb is allocating its cloud budget “in a smarter way,” Mr. Bala said.
Deutsche began coverage Monday of a pair of satellite imagery ventures, saying the space stocks have potential for "growth similar to software companies." The firm issued buy ratings for Planet and BlackSky , with Deutsche analyst Edison Yu noting that both companies are "generating substantial revenue now." Deutsche has a $7 price target on the stock, representing a 32% climb from current levels. Deutsche noted that "BlackSky has been more inconsistent operationally," but the company's software and "lucrative" government contracts "ultimately make it an attractive strategic target given the current depressed valuation." Deutsche has a $3 price target on BlackSky shares, essentially double their current trading level – with the stock down 63% this year.
OAKLAND, Calif., Oct 18 (Reuters) - Oracle Corp (ORCL.N) and Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) on Tuesday announced they are expanding their partnership and adding tens of thousands of Nvidia’s chips to boost artificial intelligence- related computational work in Oracle’s cloud. The expanded partnership comes as more companies use AI and the AI models become more complex, requiring a ramp-up in data center infrastructure investments. Chips that help accelerate computing speed include GPUs and are heavily used in AI work where Nvidia has the lion's share. While there are many AI chip startups challenging Nvidia, Clay Magouyrk, who is in charge of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said he does not see much of an opening for the newcomers. Manuvir Das, who is in charge of enterprise computing at Nvidia, said the Oracle partnership includes increased cooperation to make the AI software run more efficiently on Oracle Cloud and to provide more support to Oracle’s customers.
Oct 18 (Reuters) - Amazon Web Services (AWS),the cloud computing division of Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), said on Monday it plans to invest $5 billion in Thailand over the next 15 years to strengthen its infrastructure in the country. The investment would include construction of data centers and purchase of goods and services from regional businesses, AWS said in a statement. It also plans to set up an infrastructure hub in Thailand's Bangkok to help customers in the region securely store data, and serve end users better. AWS last month opened its first cloud data center in UAE and announced plans to setup a local hub in Mexico to boost bandwidth for clients. The edge locations help to deliver data, videos and applications at higher speeds to end users.
New York CNN Business —Stubborn inflation and the Federal Reserve’s jumbo-sized interest rate hikes will drive the American economy into a 1990-style mild recession starting in the spring, Fitch Ratings warned on Tuesday. “The US recession we expect is quite mild,” economists at Fitch Ratings said. “US household finances are much stronger now than in 2008, the banking system is healthier and there is little evidence of overbuilding in the housing market,” Fitch Ratings economists wrote. By contrast, Fitch Ratings sees the unemployment rate rising from just 3.5% today to 5.2% in 2024. “Fitch Ratings expects a very strong consumer balance sheet and the strongest labor market in decades to cushion the impact of a likely recession,” the report said.
An up-close look at the Intel Infrastructure Processor Unit (IPU), co-developed by Google and photographed at Google Cloud's engineering lab in Sunnyvale, California, U.S., in September 2022. Google/Handout via REUTERSOct 11 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC.O) and Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud on Tuesday said they have launched a co-designed chip that can make data centers more secure and efficient. The E2000 chip, code named Mount Evans, takes over the work of packaging data for networking from the expensive central processing units (CPU) that do the main computing. Google Cloud is starting to offer the E2000 in a new product called C3 VM which will be powered by Intel's fourth-generation Xeon processors, said Vahdat. Xeon chips are Intel's most powerful CPUs and Google Cloud is the first cloud service to deploy the latest generation of those chips, Intel said.

Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Register"Today, we are very pleased to be announcing our first cloud region in Greece which will provide storage and cloud services for Google customers," said Adaire Fox-Martin, president of Google Cloud International, announcing the investment at an event in Athens. Alibaba has faced growth challenges amid regulatory tightening on China's domestic technology sector and a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy. Alibaba said it will invest $1 billion over the next three fiscal years to support its cloud computing customers as the Chinese e-commerce giant looks to reignite growth after a historical slowdown. The company said it is also setting up a program to help its customers localize their cloud computing business needs depending on the market. Alibaba is the world's third-largest cloud computing player behind Microsoft and Amazon, according to Gartner. While cloud computing is a small part of Alibaba's overall business currently, the company's management sees it as a critical component to future growth and profitability.
That means Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud could be poised for a merger-and-acquisition spree. As for cloud acquisitions, analysts said Amazon's cloud unit didn't often buy companies. Cybersecurity has been a greater focus for Microsoft, AWS, and Google Cloud after the hack of the IT-software company SolarWinds in 2020. In 2019, Google purchased the data-analytics company Looker for $2.6 billion in cash under Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. With Kurian at the helm, bringing with him the Oracle acquisition playbook, Google Cloud may now have a bigger M&A appetite.
Astronomers released a new image of the Orion Nebula on Monday from the James Webb Space Telescope. "We are blown away by the breathtaking images of the Orion Nebula. The Orion Nebula is a massive star-forming region 1,350 light-years from Earth, making it the nearest stellar nursery to us. Webb spots previously hidden star-forming threadsHubble's image, left, and Webb's image, right of the Orion Nebula. The Orion Nebula is similar to the environment our solar system was born in, Habart added, so studying it could be key to understanding our solar system.

Supply & Demand — free market On the Y-axis (the vertical one on the left) we have price. The demand line slopes from the upper left to the bottom right, and the supply line goes from the bottom left to the upper right. To illustrate this tight supply, we shift our supply line to the left as moving left on the X-axis indicates a lower quantity of supply. Supply & Demand — supply constrained market As we can see above, this small shift in supply — with no change in demand — creates a new equilibrium point at which we see a higher price level (P2). Supply & Demand — supply constrained with demand destruction By lowering demand, we can reach a new equilibrium level (marked in red).
