CNN —In the wake of Hamas’ deadly attacks on Israel, former President Donald Trump is turning to a strategy he employed during the 2016 campaign of using terror abroad – and fears of future attacks on American soil – to push for hard-line immigration policies in the United States. The former president’s rhetoric harks back to his 2016 presidential campaign and his first term in office, when he used fears over terror attacks stateside to block immigrants and refugees from predominantly Muslim countries. “We have leadership who doesn’t know what they’re doing,” Trump said after those attacks. But a few candidates have joined Trump in drawing parallels between the attacks in Israel and safety in the US. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has also sought to tie Israel’s war with Hamas to US-Mexico border policy.

Another Republican presidential candidate has dropped out of the crowded 2024 field. He said the need to rally around one candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump had become increasingly clear. The GOP front-runner remains hugely popular in the Republican Party, despite making history as the first president to be impeached twice and inciting the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. The Florida governor officially launched his 2024 presidential campaign on May 24 in a glitch-marred Twitter announcement, casting himself as Trump’s only legitimate Republican rival. The wealthy biotech entrepreneur and author of “Woke, Inc.” kicked off his presidential campaign on Feb. 21 with a video and op-ed.

The Hamas attack left at least 250 dead and 1,500 wounded in Israel. The attack only adds new complications as the Biden administration and Iran are locked in disputes over Tehran’s nuclear program. Biden administration officials have also been working on brokering a normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, the most powerful and wealthy Arab state. We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —The title on the cover of Cass R. Sunstein’s 2021 book, “This is not normal,” is printed upside down. The beginning of a Trump-backed House Republican inquiry into impeaching President Joe Biden with no clear evidence of his wrongdoing. A last-ditch move Saturday kept federal agencies funded for 45 days while putting more aid to Ukraine in jeopardy. In a tight election, amid questionable economic conditions and with the normality that Biden promised in 2020 still fleeting, the threat may be greater than ever. A pseudo general election campaignBoth Trump and Biden showed up in Michigan courting blue-collar votes this week. He returned to the theme that democracy is under attack – seemingly a slam dunk given Trump’s week of autocratic outbursts and demagoguery. And all previous evidence suggests that, among GOP voters at least, Trump legal travails only boost his poll numbers and fundraising. To anyone who has forgotten the constant tearing at legal, political and constitutional norms that characterized almost every day of the last presidency, Gaetz and his fellow MAGA troops are proving that Trumpism sows chaos.

DeSantis signed a six-week abortion ban in Florida this spring and has positioned himself as a strong opponent of abortion rights, which has turned off some major donors. But he had generally dodged questions about whether he would support a federal ban, and if so, after how many weeks of gestation. In recent weeks, DeSantis, whose campaign is aggressively courting religious conservatives, has doubled down on his opposition to abortion rights in interviews and digital ads. Scott and former Vice President Mike Pence have pledged to sign an abortion ban of 15 weeks or less should they be elected. Former Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has said she would sign a federal abortion ban as well, but has stressed that Congress is unlikely to pass such a measure.

CNN —The second 2024 Republican presidential primary debate ended just as it began: with former President Donald Trump – who hasn’t yet appeared alongside his rivals onstage – as the party’s dominant front-runner. “Tonight’s GOP debate was as boring and inconsequential as the first debate, and nothing that was said will change the dynamics of the primary contest,” Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita said in a statement. DeSantis, Pence duck health care questions while Haley pouncesDespite the efforts of moderators to pin them down, DeSantis and Pence struggled to respond when challenged on their respective records on health care. A messy first hourThe first hour of the second GOP primary debate was beset by interruptions, crosstalk and protracted squabbles between the candidates and moderators over speaking time. Further complicating the matter, some of the highest polling candidates – DeSantis and Haley – were among those least willing to dive into the muck during the first hour.

CNN —The 2024 GOP presidential debate stage is shrinking after the Republican National Committee announced late Monday that seven candidates are set to participate in the second debate – down one from their first clash. Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination, is skipping the event. To qualify for the second debate, GOP candidates had to register at least 3% in two national polls or one national poll and two polls from separate early voting states – Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Nevada. Ramaswamy was a dominant figure at the first debate, engaging in memorable clashes with Pence, Christie and Haley.

Overall, Trump is the first choice of 39% of likely GOP primary voters in the first-in-the-nation primary state. That lags a bit behind his performance nationally, where Republican primary polling routinely finds Trump with majority support. Pence is the only candidate besides Christie with majority unfavorable views among likely GOP primary voters in New Hampshire (62% unfavorable). Few likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters raise serious doubts about Trump when asked to name their top concern about him as a candidate. Scott has made his support for a 15-week federal abortion ban a cornerstone of his campaign, using it to contrast himself with Trump and his other 2024 rivals. Donald Trump is facing new blowback from anti-abortion activists for refusing to commit to national abortion restrictions and for calling Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' signing of a six-week ban on the procedure a “terrible mistake.”Speaking Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press,” Trump repeatedly declined to say whether he would support a federal ban on abortion. Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, DeSantis campaign spokesman Bryan Griffin wrote of Trump: “If you want to appease Democrats, here’s your guy. “I was certainly disappointed with what I heard from President Trump today concerning the Florida Heartbeat Bill,” McCravy told The Associated Press, after watching Trump’s interview. “Laws protecting the unborn are not a ‘terrible mistake.’ They are the hallmark of a just and moral society,” she wrote on X.

“His response to me was, ‘I’ve given you leverage now to make a better deal,’” recalled DeMastus, who supports some form of a federal ban but isn't ruling out backing Trump even if he doesn't. 2 in part because of his credibility with social conservatives, has declared that every Republican running for president should endorse, at a minimum, a federal abortion ban 15 weeks into pregnancy. Ron DeSantis, who often answers questions about a federal ban by saying his state recently passed a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Trump maintains that even some anti-abortion activists believe the six-week ban — before many women even know they’re pregnant — is too harsh. The country’s leading anti-abortion group, Susan B. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Abortion providers are trying to lengthen the narrow window when they can legally terminate a pregnancy under a strict new ban in South Carolina. Spokespeople for both the South Carolina Senate majority leader and speaker of the House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A decision in their favor would mark a big shift in the number of people able to legally obtain abortions at Planned Parenthood facilities in Columbia and Charleston. “It means the difference between turning away 50% of people and turning away 90% of people,” Susanna Birdsong, the general counsel for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, told the AP. Is there an election coming up by any chance?”While some individual schools and colleges have implemented temporary mask requirements, there is no sign that anyone in federal or state leadership is considering widespread COVID-19 restrictions, requirements or mask mandates. “No COVID-19 public health restrictions or mask requirements are being considered by the Murphy administration," said Christi Peace, spokesperson for New Jersey Gov. It was largely the same message from Democratic governors’ offices in several other states that responded to an inquiry about whether any COVID-19 mandates were under consideration. “Currently, COVID-19 lockdowns and mask mandates are not being discussed and the governor has no plans to institute these measures,” she said. Reinstated mask requirements across the country have so far been limited to a handful of local schools and businesses.

CNN —There are two Republican primaries as an election season that defies conventional metrics and campaign trail traditions crashes into its fall stretch. Trump has already convinced millions of his supporters that he is the current legitimate president after his false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. Many of the candidates in the second tier appear to be running for the nomination of a Republican Party that may not even exist anymore. Given these numbers, why would Trump drop his boycott and attend the second GOP presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California later this month? “We need to narrow it down to find a leader who can get the Republican Party back on the right track and that could get us back to winning elections again,” Hogan said.

Currently the front-runner for the GOP nomination, Trump has already pleaded not guilty in a case he’s slammed as 2024 election interference. Meadows wants to move his case to federal court, where he may have a better chance of having it dismissed. Biden has nothing to do with the trial date being set. (The fact that television coverage is not allowed in federal court could be important here). Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Sen. Chris Christie to understand what happens when a Republican candidate is highly critical of the former president. His net favorability rating in the latest Quinnipiac University poll stands at minus-44 points among Republicans. Those with an opinion viewed him unfavorably by more than a 3-to-1 ratio (26% unfavorable to 8% favorable, a net favorability rating of minus-18 points). Among those who have, Hurd has a similar net favorability ratio to Hutchinson’s – 4% viewed him favorably and 11% unfavorably. This leaves Trump’s GOP rivals with a conundrum that even Harry Houdini would find difficult to solve: how to eat away at Trump’s support without being seen as trying to bring him down.
