McLaren won the Formula 1 constructors’ championship on Sunday for the first time in more than a quarter century, securing it in the final race of the season by keeping chief rival Ferrari at bay. It won with a decisive lights-to-flag victory by Lando Norris in Abu Dhabi, landing the storied British team its first championship since 1998, when former McLaren driver Mika Häkkinen won one of his two driver’s championships. Heading into the season finale, Ferrari's two drivers needed to outscore McLaren’s two drivers by at least 21 points. The Italian team hasn’t won a championship since 2008. The end of the 2024 season also marks a changing-of-the-guard moment for F1, with a slew of younger drivers rising and some older drivers stepping aside.

Or, maybe the whole market has a new expectation of stocks — and, stocks are delivering on those expectations and then some. Maybe that's why it is up more than 900% for the year. Maybe that's why it is now a roughly $140 billion company. With so many other opportunities to raise money — such as private equity and venture capital firms trying to get in — the stock market almost doesn't matter. But only new supply can bring this market down because valuation has ceased to mean much for most of the market.

Rebel forces led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham swept through Syria, seizing Damascus. Jupiter on Saturday will shine at its brightest for the year, as Earth’s orbit swings our planet between Jupiter and the sun. As night falls, Jupiter will rise in the east-northeast, among the stars that make up the constellation of Taurus, according to NASA. Slightly lower and to the left of the belt will be Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.

The trick, though, comes in trying to distinguish between a bull market feeding off rational fundamental positives and one that has grown so frisky as to be acutely risky. What's clear for sure is that we've entered the "belief" phase of this bull market, which is more than two years old yet is showing few of the telltale signs of ending very soon. Wall Street turns bullish Brokerage-house strategists as a group were far too cautious entering 2023, the S & P 500 staying ahead of the consensus target virtually all year. CNN —The ancient Lycians knew a thing or two about democracy. Drive around the coast of this beautiful region and you’ll never be too far from a spectacular city of the dead – elaborate tombs carved by Lycians into the sides of cliffs overlooking towns, valleys and shorelines. This cliff tomb above the city of Fethiye is a great place to watch the sun go down. It’s a mystery, says Catherine Draycott, an associate professor of archaeology at the UK’s Durham University, who has studied Lycian cliff tombs, as well as sarcophagi and another rarer variation — sarcophagi placed atop pillars. There are plenty of less extreme Lycian tomb raids to enjoy in this corner of Turkey.

AdvertisementThe Fed doesn't need to cut rates, according to JPMorgan Asset Management's Bill Eigen. The Federal Reserve may not have as much room to cut interest rates as it thinks, and central bankers would be better off skipping another decrease in December, according to one JPMorgan bond expert. Bill Eigen, the head of the Absolute Return and Opportunistic Fixed Income team at JPMorgan Asset Management, cautioned markets ahead of the Fed's next meeting, adding that he believed the central banks should pause cutting interest rates. The interest rate outlook remains mixed on Wall Street, with some forecasters expressing hesitation at the possibility of taking interest rates much lower. Deutsche Bank suggested the Fed may not be able to cut interest rates at all in 2025, thanks to higher inflation risks stemming from some of Trump's proposed policies.

The delay also affects Artemis-3 moon landing, now planned for 2027. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the mission is still ahead of China's moon landing plans in 2030. NASA on Thursday delayed sending astronauts back to the moon in a setback for its Artemis program, which is already several years late and billions over budget. The Artemis 2 mission, which plans to fly astronauts to the moon and back, has been pushed back from September 2025 to April 2026. With Trump's nomination of billionaire Jared Isaacman as NASA's next administrator, concerns are growing about the future of Artemis and NASA's lunar strategy.

JERUSALEM — The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah appeared on the verge of collapse this week — something that is not a surprise to many Israelis. On Monday night, Israeli strikes on two southern Lebanese villages killed at least 10 people, the nation’s Health Ministry said. That was a response to an earlier Hezbollah attack on Israeli military positions in the disputed Shebaa Farms, which itself was in retaliation for what the militant group said were multiple ceasefire violations. Rockets fired from southern Lebanon are intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defense system in northern Israel on Aug. 4. The Oct. 7 Hamas attack changed her calculation.

LONDON — The world is entering a “third nuclear age,” the head of the British armed forces has warned, with world-ending weapons once again spreading globally and international agreements to control them collapsing. He also cited China’s rapid development to become the world’s second fully-fledged nuclear competitor to the United States, alongside Russia. Global power is shifting and a third nuclear age is upon us,” Radakin said. Last year, Russia suspended its participation from New START, an agreement that sought to put verifiable limits on Washington’s and Moscow’s nuclear arsenals. And in 2019, then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, Treaty, accusing Russia of violating the agreement.
