The U.S. on Saturday reported its first case of a more aggressive strain of mpox: an individual in California who had recently traveled from Eastern Africa. It is classified into two distinct groups: the more aggressive strain, clade I, and a somewhat milder strain, clade II. In the current outbreak, clade I has been spreading largely through contact with infected animals and transmission within households, according to disease experts. But a version of the strain, clade Ib, has also spread through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men in Congo. That’s compared to a 0.2% global fatality rate for the 2022 outbreak.

The knife attack took place at the Wuxi Vocational College of Arts and Technology in Yixing, part of Wuxi city in the eastern province of Jiangsu. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and confessed to his actions, police added. “According to preliminary investigations, the suspect, surname Xu — male, 21 years old, a 2024 graduate of the college — attacked others after failing an exam and not receiving his graduation certificate, as well as being dissatisfied with his internship compensation,” a statement by the Yixing Public Security Bureau said. Brandenburg was arrested by Salisbury police on Wednesday, and Clark turned himself in to Salisbury police on Thursday. CNN —Dallas police are investigating after a Southwest Airlines flight was struck by a bullet as it was preparing to depart from Dallas Love Field Airport in Texas Friday evening, authorities said. The bullet apparently struck the right side of the plane just under the flight deck as the plane was taxiing for takeoff from Dallas to Indianapolis just before 10 p.m., according to Southwest Airlines. The Boeing 737-800 plane sustained damage after the bullet struck “near the cockpit,” according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It also comes about two years after a woman allegedly fired several gunshots into the air at Dallas Love Field Airport, sparking chaos as travelers fled. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday named Chris Wright, the CEO of Denver-based fracking company Liberty Energy, as his pick to be the next secretary of the Department of Energy. Wright will also serve as a member on the newly formed Council of National Energy, which Trump said will consist of all agencies involved in the “permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, transportation” of energy. In addition to his company’s work on fracking oil and natural gas, Wright also sits on the board of a modular nuclear reactor company and has talked about the potential of nuclear energy. Developing nuclear energy has become a big focus of the Biden administration’s Energy Department. “Standing in the way of today’s energy system before we’ve built a new energy system, there’s just no upside in that,” Wright told CNBC.

Béla Károlyi, the gymnastics coach who rose to prominence by training Olympic all-around champions Nadia Comăneci and Mary Lou Retton, has died at 82, USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Saturday night. The governing body for the sport in the United States said Károlyi died on Friday, though the cause of death was not immediately clear. He quickly built his reputation in the United States after guiding Retton to gold at the 1984 Games. He was named the head coach of the 1992 Olympic team after years of his gymnasts excelling at domestic and international competitions, though many were plagued by injuries because of overtraining. In 2018, USA Gymnastics cut ties with the training center, known as the Károlyi Ranch, where instances of abuse occurred.
