The mandatory raise would apply to all fast food restaurants in California that are part of a chain with at least 60 locations nationwide. The agreement ends an tense standoff between labor unions and the fast food industry that started last year when Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law creating a Fast Food Council with the authority to raise wages of fast food workers up to $22 per hour. In exchange for a $20 minimum wage, labor unions have withdrawn their legislation to make fast food companies liable for their franchise operators' labor violations and lawmakers have stripped funding for the Industrial Welfare Commission. The Fast Food Council created in the original legislation would still exist, but it would only have the authority to set wages, not workplace standards.

The dating app told employees to start working from an office 2 days a week or lose their jobs. The Communication Workers of America union said about 80 of its 178 workers rejected the RTO order. Last month the LGBTQ+ dating app told employees to starting work in the office two days a week from October or face dismissal after August 31. A representative for Grindr told Bloomberg the union claims were without merit and that it was "returning to the office in a hybrid model in October." Google has been telling employees to show up at the office three days a week since April 2022, and Meta followed suit in June.

The adherents of the "Yes In My Backyard," or YIMBY, movement believe that America's housing crisis comes down to the fundamental tension between supply and demand. Today, nearly 75% of residentially-zoned land in the US is restricted to single-family housing — detached homes designed for one family. Folks are like, 'Oh, we're in a housing crisis for the very first time. Ground zero for the modern YIMBY movement was California, where sky-high home prices forced people to reconsider their attitudes toward development. The city didn't allow new multiunit buildings to be taller or wider than the single-family homes they replaced, making construction less financially attractive to developers.

Silicon Valley billionaires revealed plans to build a new city after buying $800 million in land. The land was quietly purchased in Solano County, a rural area near San Francisco and Sacramento. Most of the land purchased is in the southeastern portion of the county, with parcels stretching from Fairfield to Rio Vista. Billionaires want to build a new city in rural California, but they're encountering wavering support from locals and lawmakers. Solano County homes are among the most affordable in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a median sales price of $600,000 last month.

What if you built a new city from the ground up? Mr. Sramek, a former Goldman Sachs trader, had moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to make it in tech. He was a European immigrant smitten with the energy of local start-ups, but he preferred more walkable cities like Zurich. Soon, he began taking fishing trips to Solano County on the San Francisco Bay’s eastern edge. A rural corner of the county eventually became the centerpiece of a plan hatched by Mr. Sramek to build a city from scratch.

In 2017, Michael Moritz, the billionaire venture capitalist, sent a note to a potential investor about what he described as an unusual opportunity: a chance to invest in the creation of a new California city. The site was in a corner of the San Francisco Bay Area where land was cheap. He painted a kind of urban blank slate where everything from design to construction methods and new forms of governance could be rethought. And it would all be a short distance from San Francisco and Silicon Valley. “Let me know if this tickles your fancy,” he said in the note, a copy of which was reviewed by The New York Times.

Gaslighting: What it really is and how to address it
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
The concept of gaslighting originated from the 1944 film “Gaslight” and the 1938 play on which it was based. Signs you’re being gaslitThere are other common misconceptions about the nature of gaslighting, experts said. What pushes these behaviors into gaslighting territory has to do with what the person you’re dealing with says and their intentions behind it. The degree to which a person gaslights someone else can vary, but gaslighting is always emotional abuse, whether intentional or not, experts said. Talking to a therapist can help you get an objective perspective and see more clearly any signs of gaslighting behavior and psychological abuse, Kennedy said.

Google is hoping to lure workers back to the office with a new on-site hotel special, but some workers aren't convinced it's a good deal. The company said full-time employees can book a room at an on-campus hotel in Mountain View for $99 a night in what it's deeming a "Summer Special," according to materials viewed by CNBC. The Google-owned hotel is situated on a newer campus in Mountain View, California, that it opened last year. The city of Mountain View is especially short on housing and contains large swaths of corporate offices — many of which are owned or leased by Google. A Google spokesperson noted that the company regularly runs specials for employees to take advantage of the company's spaces and amenities.

The San Francisco Bay Area has ruled the technology industry for decades, from the early days of personal computers to the social media boom. The report, which the Washington think tank released on Thursday, said generative A.I. And the winners, so far, are San Francisco and San Jose, Calif. While that may not be surprising, the Brookings report may help to dispel the notion that smaller tech hubs like Austin, Texas, or Miami will be home to the next generation of big tech companies. If anything, it suggests the Bay Area’s hold on the tech industry could grow stronger.

In a Twitter Spaces event Wednesday evening, Musk explained his plan for building a safer AI. Rather than explicitly programming morality into its AI, xAI will seek to create a "maximally curious" AI, he said. Musk in March registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, according to a state filing. The firm lists Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as a secretary. Dan Hendrycks, who will advise the xAI team, is currently director of the Center for AI Safety and his work revolves around the risks of AI.

Median rent prices in these cities dropped by 0.5% in the last year, according to an analysis by Realtor.com. For renters, the decrease is a much-needed break after rent prices soared by nearly 25% from 2020 through most of 2021. This, alongside a growing number of newly constructed apartments, has likely driven down rent prices, the study says. At the same time, rent costs have steadily risen in many major Midwest and Northeast cities. In Columbus, Ohio, rent prices grew by 9.3% — the highest increase of all cities.

Some US cities have replaced fireworks with light shows performed by drones. Drone shows reduce the chance of wildfires and sound pollution. Lakewood, Boulder, and Castle Rock have opted for drone shows following the switch from other surrounding cities in Colorado last year. Some fireworks shows were canceled this year. CNN —Wall Street bankers, investors and economists have for months waffled over whether a US recession is coming. But for some Americans, the unforgiving economic pain typical during recession has already set in. Consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic output, so if more Americans are forced to cut back because they were laid off, that might throw the US economy into a recession. Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan told CNN last week that he expects a mild recession early next year, rather than the late 2022 recession many have predicted. That means that laid-off Americans were often able to find a new job quickly due to a hot job market.

Some of this work is done by Britain's' Cambridge University, South Korea's Bundang CHA Hospital, International Stem Cell Corp's (ISCO.PK) Cyto Therapeutics in Australia, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harvard University and Japan's Kyoto University Hospital. For BlueRock's experimental therapy, researchers took induced pluripotent stem cells, which are modified to regain the ability to form any type of specialised tissue, and transformed them into dopamine-producing nerve cells. When surgically implanted into the brain of a person with Parkinson's disease, the therapeutic cells are designed to restore neural networks destroyed by the disease. Initial trial results showed the cells multiplied and started making dopamine, an important brain signalling molecule which is lacking in Parkinson's patients. Parkinson's, for which there is no cure and which affects more than 10 million people worldwide, causes progressive brain damage.
