Target is getting its inventory in shape after a glut of products from last year caused it to slash prices. Still, the company slashed its sales and profit outlook as shoppers continue to spend more on food. E-commerce sales slumped nearly 11% – well below the overall sales decline of 5%. Target may well be beholden to consumer behavior, but it can steady its aim to hit marks under its control.

On Monday, the Financial Times reported that private equity firm TPG (TPG.O) had approached EY about buying a stake in its consulting arm. Back in May of last year when EY’s split was leaked to the press, valuations were much more attractive. If TPG pushes for a full breakup, EY would still have to work out how to divvy up its tax advice business between audit and consulting. Given the challenges, EY may well decide it’s better to soldier on with an awkward marriage than risk a messy divorce. Washington, DC CNN —Rents in Manhattan hit another all-time high in July, the third record high in the past four months, even as rents are cooling in other parts of the country. That’s up 6% from a year ago and up 2.3% from June, when rents hit were at $4,300. A one-bedroom apartment in the borough had a median rent of $4,295, up 7.4% from last year; while a two-bedroom apartment had a median rent of $5,200, up 4% from a year ago. Not only did median rents go up, but the amount of concessions — or incentives offered by landlords — continued to drop. All the metrics for rent tracked in the report — including median rent, median rent inclusive of concessions and the average rent — hit record highs.

Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) lowered its estimate for global container trade this year as companies reduce inventories and higher interest rates and recession risks in Europe and the United States drag on global economic growth. The company, one of the world's biggest container shippers, said it expects container volumes to fall by as much as 4%. Maersk controls about one-sixth of global container trade, transporting goods for retailers and consumer companies such as Walmart (WMT.N), Nike (NKE.N) and Unilever (ULVR.L). Ukraine said on Wednesday it was establishing a temporary shipping route via Romania, one of the neighbouring Black Sea countries. Russia's Defence Ministry said flag states of ships travelling to Ukrainian ports would be considered parties to the conflict on the Ukrainian side from midnight Moscow time (2100 GMT on Wednesday). U.S. officials have information indicating Russia laid additional sea mines in the approaches to Ukrainian ports, said White House National Security Council spokesperson Adam Hodge. "We believe that this is a coordinated effort to justify any attacks against civilian ships in the Black Sea and lay blame on Ukraine for these attacks," he said. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Western countries of "perverting" the U.N.-backed deal formally called the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

Hollywood actors are joining TV and film writers on the picket lines. Later that day, the union officially issued a strike order for its actors. On a granular level, there are several sticking points on which actors and studios could not ultimately agree. As with writers, actors' wages account for taxes, team members such as managers (agents get their own commission on top of actor pay) and for the unpredictability of their industry. "There's a lot of bitterness and mistrust at this point," says Handel, "both in terms of the actors and the studio alliance and also the writers and the studio alliance."
