President Biden arrived on Monday in Cape Verde, an island nation off the coast of Africa, for the first stop of the only trip to sub-Saharan Africa of his presidency, a journey shadowed by his decision to pardon his son of tax and gun convictions. Air Force One touched down for refueling at Amílcar Cabral International Airport on the island of Sal on a bright, sunny morning, before continuing on to Angola, where the president will work to bolster American ties. While waiting for the plane to be readied for the next leg of the flight, Mr. Biden met at an airport lounge with Ulisses Correia e Silva, the prime minister of Cabo Verde. The president is scheduled to arrive by evening in Luanda, the Angolan capital, where he will visit a slavery museum and highlight a new $1 billion rail corridor as a primary example of his administration’s plan to help lift the region’s economy.

The city glitters, but there's a reason the locals call South Korea "Hell Joseon." Lonely deaths in South Korea increased from 3,378 in 2021 to 3,661 in 2023, per the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare's data. "'Seoul Without Loneliness' is a bold challenge for the city and not an easy path to take," the representative said. In 2023, South Korea recorded a suicide rate of 27.3 out of 100,000 people, the highest rate among OECD countries like the US, UK, and Japan. Kee Hong Choi, a psychology professor at Korea University, said that his country's education system needs to be "changed dramatically" to become less competitive.

CNN —Days of protests have rocked Georgia following the government’s controversial decision to delay the former Soviet country’s bid to join the European Union. Tensions intensified in late October when Georgian Dream claimed victory in a contested election that was widely seen as a referendum on joining the EU. Opposition TV channel Formula showed people in the central town of Khashuri throwing eggs at the local Georgian Dream office and tearing down the party’s flag. Georgian Dream, founded by a billionaire who made his fortune in Russia, has taken a sharp authoritarian turn in recent years. Experts have warned the suspension of EU talks is another sign the country is going down an undemocratic path under Georgian Dream.

Syrian rebels shocked the country with a lightning offensive on its biggest city and the surrounding region starting last week, upending a 13-year-old civil war that had been dormant for several years. By seizing that city, Aleppo, occupying large stretches of the countryside and advancing on the western city of Hama, the rebels have been able to expand their territory to include much of the northwest corner of Syria. The fighters opposed to President Bashar al-Assad’s autocratic rule always included a motley patchwork of rebel factions who were often at odds with each other. Now the group may extend its control to a much larger zone. Here’s a primer on how it formed, how it evolved and why it staged this attack.

AdvertisementThe US Navy has developed a new way of reloading warships with missiles while at sea. It will be "critical" to any future conflict in the Pacific, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said. "Without the ability to rearm at sea, our service combatants must return to port, sometimes thousands of miles away," Del Toro said at the time. Del Toro said the US Navy expected to start deploying TRAM within the next two to three years. In a speech at Columbia University in December 2022, Del Toro said delivering the "game-changing" capability to rearm US warships at sea was one of his top priorities.

CNN —Intel Monday announced CEO Pat Gelsinger has resigned after a difficult stint at the company. The once-dominant chipmaker’s stock cratered as it missed the AI boom and was surpassed by most of its rivals. Gelsinger took over as Intel’s chief executive in February 2021, returning to the company at which he had spent decades of work, including as chief technology officer. He had left Intel for a stint as CEO of software giant VMWare. At Intel, Gelsinger was tasked with turning around the iconic American tech giant that was struggling against unprecedented competition, production delays and the departure of top talent.

‘Brain rot’ is Oxford’s word of the year
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Rosa Rahimi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
“Brain rot” took the title in a vote in which more than 37,000 people participated, as well as public commentary and analysis of OUP’s language data. “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot,” wrote Thoreau, “will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”All these years later, it seems brain rot is well and truly established. “’Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time,” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, in Monday’s announcement. “I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha… These communities have amplified the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot,’” he added. The word, which means being reserved in appearance or behavior, had already been named word of the year by Dictionary.com last week.

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a surprising new view of a long-studied galactic neighbor, the Sombrero galaxy, revealing a perspective that looks quite different from the wide-brimmed Mexican hat for which it was named. Hubble: Messier 104, The Sombrero Galaxy Looking like a broad-brimmed Mexican hat, the “Sombrero” galaxy, M104, is a spiral galaxy seen nearly edge-on. NASA/ESA/CSA/STScI The Sombrero Galaxy is imaged in visible light by the Hubble Space Telescope, left, and in mid-infrared light by the James Webb Space Telescope’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument). But the Sombrero galaxy is quiet in terms of star formation compared with other galaxies such as Messier 82. The Webb telescope, launched in December 2021, will begin its fourth year of observing the universe in July.

AdvertisementNew York City is on the verge of legalizing accessory dwelling units in much of the city. The effort is part of the mayor's "City of Yes" housing plan, designed to boost the supply of homes. More than a dozen states across the country have legalized ADUs in recent years, and New York State greenlit the secondary units in 2022, although New York City has restricted them. Last year, New York City rolled out a pilot program that awarded 15 homeowners with up to nearly $400,000 in funding per household to build an extra dwelling in their backyard, basement, or attic. Another Republican council member opposed to City of Yes derided ADUs as backyard "treehouses" that would depress home values.

CNN —Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, was pushed out as the head of two veterans’ advocacy organizations amid internal allegations of mismanagement and personal misconduct, The New Yorker reported Sunday. It also alleges that he sexually pursued female staffers, and that the organization ignored another staffer’s alleged sexual misconduct. It claims that his management team “sexually pursued” employees and divided the organization’s female staffers into two groups — “party girls” and “not party girls,” The New Yorker reported. The accuser told police that Hegseth physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room, took her phone and then sexually assaulted her. Years later, Hegseth paid the accuser in a settlement agreement that included a confidentiality clause, his attorney Timothy Parlatore told CNN in a statement last month.
