All three major averages advanced for the week, powered by strong mega-cap earnings and favorable inflation data. Looking to next week, earnings season enters its second half with the last of our mega-caps — Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) — set to report on Thursday. We'll get a better read on the employment picture on Wednesday with the ADP report and then, more importantly, on Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for July. Thursday after the close brings us to the main events of the week: Earnings from Apple and Amazon. For those looking to review first quarter performance ahead of these releases, be sure to keep our first-quarter earnings report card handy.

Westend61 | Westend61 | Getty ImagesInterest rates, inventory issues add to costsThe overall cost of purchasing a car is increasing in part due to interest rates, said Tom McParland, contributing writer for automotive website Jalopnik and operator of vehicle-buying service Automatch Consulting. The average rate on a new car loan is 7.2%, according to Edmunds. While some car manufacturers are improving their supply deliveries, inventory wrinkles are still far from being ironed out, experts say. Yet, a longer loan is not always ideal. Between the pricing and inventory issues, people who have the luxury or the patience to wait it out are "definitely" doing so, said Yoon.

BNP Paribas beat estimates on debt financing, cost management
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
BNP Paribas , the euro zone's biggest bank, beat estimates in the second quarter as the corporate debt financing business and strong cost management partly offset a slump in securities trading. Group revenue fell 1.5% to 11.4 billion euros, also above expectations, while the cost of risk — money put aside for failing loans - came in lower than expected at 689 million euros. By contrast, sales from global banking activities within CIB - which comprise bond issues, syndicated loans and cash management — jumped by 17.5% in the second quarter at constant scope and currencies. BNP's bottom line in the second quarter also suffered from a set of exceptional items that totaled 723 million euros after tax. These included an 125 million euro provision for an unspecified litigation.

The French lender's second-quarter net income fell 4.9% on a reported basis to 2.81 billion euros ($3.12 billion), beating the 2.49 billion euro analyst consensus compiled by the company. Group revenue fell 1.5% to 11.4 billion euros, also above expectations, while the cost of risk - money put aside for failing loans - was lower than expected at 689 million euros. BNP's bottom line also suffered from a set of exceptional items that totalled 723 million euros after tax. These included an 125 million euro provision for unspecified litigation. The group's 5 billion euro share buyback programme will proceed as planned, it confirmed, adding that the second tranche of 2.5 billion euros had been approved and will be launched from early August.

Europe’s banks are bracing for a wave of defaults
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
London CNN —Some of Europe’s biggest banks are setting aside more cash to absorb potential losses on loans, as rising interest rates increase pressure on borrowers. So far, there are “limited signs of stress” across the bank’s loan portfolios, Anna Cross, group finance director at Barclays, told reporters. Loan loss provisions at Deutsche Bank (DB) jumped 72% to €401 million ($446 million) in the second quarter, Germany’s biggest lender said Wednesday. Jonas Goltermann, deputy chief markets economist at Capital Economics, told CNN that he was most worried about the potential for losses on bank loans to the commercial real estate sector. “The near-term economic outlook for the euro area has deteriorated, owing largely to weaker domestic demand,” the bank’s President Christine Lagarde told reporters.

Spain's Santander on Wednesday said its net profit in the second quarter rose 14% year-on-year to 2.67 billion euros ($2.95 billion), as higher interest rates in Europe, mainly in Spain, offset some weakness in Brazil and the United States. Net profit topped the 2.54 billion euros expected by analysts, despite a rise 10% in provisions, and was also 3.9% higher than in the previous quarter. Santander has relied on Latin America in the past to cope with tough conditions but European banks are now reaping benefits from higher interest rates. The bank's overall underlying net interest income, earnings on loans minus deposit costs, rose 12.4% to 10.74 billion euros, above analysts' estimates of 10.45 billion euros.

LONDON/MADRID, July 26 (Reuters) - Spain's Santander (SAN.MC) is planning to hire around 150 bankers primarily in the United States as part of its plans to accelerate growth in its investment banking business, three sources with knowledge of the matter said. Santander's global corporate and investment banking chief, Jose M. Linares, discussed the plans in a town hall held in New York last week, the sources said. So far, the bank has hired more than 20 senior investment bankers chiefly in the United States, Reuters has reported. Net profit at the bank's global corporate and investment bank rose 16% year-on-year in the second quarter to 899 million euros. Santander employs currently around 8,000 staff at its global corporate and investment bank.

Higher interest rates helped UniCredit (CRDI.MI) strongly beat earnings expectations in the second quarter. Germany's financial regulator BaFin has been calling on banks to raise the amount of money they set aside for bad loans. Deutsche Bank on Wednesday said provisions for bad loans nearly doubled in the second quarter from a year earlier to 401 million euros. Santander's financial chief said bad loans in Brazil may have already peaked. This sent the bank's shares up around 2% on Wednesday, with Jefferies saying that it sees upside potential to net interest income.

The contribution from the overall investment bank to Santander's group's earnings rose to 32% in the first quarter of 2023, from around 20% in 2019. Overall, profits at Santander's corporate and investment bank have risen since 2019 by around 60% to 2.8 billion euros ($3.2 billion) at the end of 2022.

MEXICO CITY, July 13 (Reuters) - The Mexican government is no longer interested in purchasing Citigroup's (C.N) local retail arm, known as Banamex, a government spokesperson said on Thursday, adding that the U.S. bank "chose a different path" for its unit. Deputy Finance Minister Gabriel Yorio told Reuters at the time that Mexico could pursue a total or partial acquisition of the unit. Government spokesperson Jesus Ramirez did not immediately respond when asked which path the U.S. bank is taking. Before Citi's decision to list Banamex, banking sources said mining conglomerate Grupo Mexico (GMEXICOB.MX) had been eyeing the unit for around $7 billion. BOGOTA, July 14 (Reuters) - A crash in the price of coca, the chief ingredient in cocaine, is contributing to food insecurity in Colombia and causing displacement, as people leave areas that depend on the illicit crop, according to an internal United Nations presentation seen by Reuters. Historically coca crops have provided better incomes than legal alternatives for thousands of rural Colombian families, with drug-trafficking groups often footing the costs of transport, fertilizers and other supplies. "There is no cash to buy food and the inflation of (food prices) is rising," the presentation, dated June, said. Oversupply of coca - including more productive plants and record crops - is contributing to the crash, along with slow growth of trafficking routes and new coca cultivation in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, the presentation said. Other reasons for falling coca prices include territorial disputes between trafficking groups and imports of synthetic opioid fentanyl to the United States, a major cocaine consumer, it added.

The test also measured how well the lenders would cope with a global rise in interest rates. "Major UK banks’ capital and liquidity positions remain robust and profitability has increased, which enables them both to improve their capital positions and to support their customers." The Bank said it had decided to maintain its counter-cyclical capital buffer (CCyB) for banks unchanged. The average two-year fixed residential mortgage rate climbed to 6.66%, narrowly exceeding the 6.65% touched on Oct. 20 and the highest since August 2008 when it stood at 6.94%, according to data provider Moneyfacts. Governor Andrew Bailey said last month there were signs of more persistent underlying inflation pressures after the BoE unexpectedly raised its Bank Rate to 5% in an effort to tame the highest inflation rate among the world's big rich economies. Swap rates, a key measure lenders use to determine the cost of mortgage borrowing, have also soared. The surge has prompted major mortgage lenders to repeatedly reprice home loan offerings. British homebuyers typically take out mortgages with an interest rate that is fixed for two or five years, and then remortgage on to a new fixed rate or accept a variable rate.

MADRID, July 7 (Reuters) - Telefonica (TEF.MC) has sold a 54% stake in its fibre optic network in Peru to U.S. private equity fund KKR (KKR.N) and 10% to Entel's (ENTEL.SN) local business, the Spanish telecoms group said on Friday, adding that it will retain the remaining 36%. In many markets, the company has separated the infrastructure into different units to maximise the value of its disposed assets. The Spanish company did not disclose the value of the transaction but said the deal would cut its debt by 200 million euros ($217.8 million). The transaction valued 100% of the unit at about 550 million euros, including debt, according to a banking source close to the deal. The new company, Pangeaco, will combine the existing fibre optic network in Peru from Telefonica and Entel, KKR firm said in a separate statement.

MADRID, June 23 (Reuters) - Spain's competition watchdog urged political parties to give this institution better tools to look into potential anticompetitive practices between banks when setting deposit rates for savers, its chair Cani Fernandez said on Friday. Spanish banks offer the lowest household deposit rates among the euro zone's large economies, igniting demands from the government, supervisors and clients to pass on higher interest rates for savers. "A tacit collusion is a hole in our system of tools to tackle (this issue) in markets with little competition," Fernandez said. She added that other European countries, such as Germany and the UK, had better tools to look into these commercial practices. On Friday, the Bank of Spain Governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos said it was up to the CNMC to look into that matter.

MADRID, June 22 (Reuters) - The European Central Bank will need to raise interest rates by another 25 basis points in July to combat inflation but the path afterwards remains unclear, ECB policymaker Pablo Hernandez de Cos said on Friday. De Cos added that given the "high uncertainty ... we will continue to take our decisions depending on the data and, in particular, on the aggregate assessment of the inflation outlook, the dynamics of underlying inflation." Euro zone inflation has been moderating for months, courtesy of lower energy prices and the steepest increase in rates in the ECB's 25-year history. But it remains unacceptably high for the ECB at 6.1% in May, with underlying price growth only just starting to slow despite signs economic growth is stagnating. MADRID, June 22 (Reuters) - Recent interest rate hikes by the European Central Bank should be fully transmitted to savers and reflected in higher deposit rates, ECB Vice-President Luis de Guindos said on Thursday. "A full transmission (of monetary policy) requires the remuneration of savings," De Guindos told a financial event in the northern Spanish city of Santander. Spanish banks on Tuesday however pushed back against a government call to start paying higher rates on deposits. Lenders maintain that a lower deposit rate is partly the result of excess liquidity in the sector and deny claims of a lack of competition in Spain's relatively concentrated banking sector. This would leave them with around 40 billion euros of those funding lines at the ECB.
