CNN —Amber Ruffin has some thoughts about those who think that CNN isn’t necessarily the best home for comedy. “I’d say they’re right,” Ruffin told CNN in an interview this week. Based on a British series of the same name, entertainers, political figures and comedians will appear as guests for quick-witted conversation and games. “Anybody who has a sense of humor about the world and has a sense of humor about themselves, I think those are the only prerequisites,” he said about possible team members. “If you can laugh the world and laugh at yourself, I think you’re gonna fit in very well.”“Have I Got News For You” premieres Saturday, September 14 at 9 p.m.

Trump even muddled the most basic attack on connecting Harris to Biden, claiming at one point that Biden "hates" his own vice president. Trump, an acolyte of Roy Cohn, forgot the controversial lawyer's most famous adage to "Attack, Attack, Attack" when he needed it the most. And as he did, all night, Trump took the bait, spending the first part of his rebuttal defending the money his father gave him. Harris continues to have a slight lead in the major national polling averages, but the race remains even closer in key swing states. After reversing himself many times, Trump declared before the weekend that he would not debate Harris again.

The large audiences are positive signs for Democrats as they seek to turn North Carolina blue for the first time since Barack Obama won in 2008. "There’s a reason why Donald Trump spent more money in August in North Carolina than any other state — because they’re panicking," he said. CNN —Four years ago, North Carolina voters handed Democrats one of the party’s toughest losses and one of its most consequential wins. The race to succeed the term-limited Cooper, however, seems to be leaning toward the Democratic nominee, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein. But North Carolina is still a purple state with a history of elections decided by razor-thin margins. Washington CNN —The Harris campaign is launching a new abortion-focused ad Thursday, capitalizing on what officials believe was one of the most pivotal exchanges between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump during Tuesday’s presidential debate. Harris’ team prepared the vice president to confront Trump on nationwide abortion restrictions. The newly released ad includes both candidates’ responses on abortion on the debate stage. Harris, in response, ran through personal stories of women struggling to get health care while navigating abortion restrictions. Harris campaign officials spent Wednesday poring over footage of the debate to identify key moments to put into new campaign TV and digital ads, according to the campaign, seeking to amplify what they perceive to be the strongest debate exchange.

The findings bring the phenomenon — and the controversy — of the latest new and powerful weight loss drugs to the youngest age group yet. The new trial looked at liraglutide, the active ingredient used in two of Novo Nordisk’s older GLP-1 drugs: Saxenda, a weight loss drug, and Victoza, a diabetes drug. So instead of looking at overall weight loss like in adult studies, they decided to focus more on BMI, which takes into account both weight and height. A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk said that it has submitted an application to the Food and Drug Administration to expand the approval of liraglutide for weight loss in children ages 6 to 11. Is 6 too young for a weight loss drug?

Harris hasn’t yet released many details about her strategy to wipe out medical debt, but policy experts say a newly implemented medical debt relief program from North Carolina could offer a roadmap. Roy Cooper announced that nearly 100 hospitals in the state had signed on to participate in the Medical Debt Relief Incentive Program, which he said will incentivize hospitals to eliminate $4 billion in medical debt for 2 million low- and middle-income patients over the next two years. At a campaign event last week in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris thanked Cooper for canceling medical debt in his state, and Cooper introduced Harris at the convention Thursday. Hospitals will get additional federal funds if they forgive existing debt and move to prevent future medical debt. “I see medical debt as the most salient example of a health care system which isn’t working,” he said.

Google unnerved Silicon Valley last week when it agreed to pay $2.5 billion to license Character.AI's technology, hire its two superstar cofounders and 20 percent of employees. The deal came after AI developers Adept and Inflection both effectively sold themselves to Amazon and Microsoft, respectively, in recent months. Its appeal as a chatbot that uses AI to make virtual characters that interact with users seems decidedly niche. When Roy Cockrum, a one-time struggling actor and a former monk, won a $259 million Powerball jackpot in 2014, he decided to splurge on something a bit out of the ordinary: supporting nonprofit theater. He set up a foundation that has given away $25 million to 39 American theaters so far, which is why he found himself the other night at the Old Globe in San Diego. He was there to watch the premiere of a production he supported to help the theater reach a milestone: a large-scale staging of the only Shakespeare play it had yet to produce, an adaptation of the somewhat rarely performed three “Henry VI” plays. “The question I put to artistic directors is, ‘Is there a project you’ve always dreamed of doing that you couldn’t afford?’” Cockrum, an apple-cheeked, snowy-haired 68-year-old, said in an interview. “To help artistic directors dream bigger than they would otherwise.”At a time when nonprofit theaters across the country are struggling with rising costs, fewer subscribers, smaller audiences and dwindling corporate philanthropy, Cockrum’s generosity stands out.

Roy Cooper has taken himself out of consideration to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, according to two sources familiar with the discussions, in a sign that the accelerated search has entered a new phase. A decision could come within a week, two people familiar with the matter said, with Harris’ goal to make an announcement before August 7. She intends to have private conversations with top contenders, sources said, but it was unclear whether those discussions have started. Cooper, whose friendship with Harris dates back to their time serving as the attorneys general of their respective states, was also the oldest candidate under consideration. His age, 67, was seen by some Democrats to be at odds with Harris’ push for a vigorous and younger ticket, the sources said.
