The pay limit has been in place since the end of a labor dispute that caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 NHL season. Sports business experts said the strict salary cap has helped the league's financial health since the full season stoppage. The hard salary cap is a stark difference from Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, which have no salary cap and a soft salary cap, respectively. But the hard cap means NHL teams have to be especially diligent. The NHL is planning to start negotiations with the NHLPA in early 2025, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at this year's NHL Board of Governors meeting.

Simply put, the leading maker of AI chips again fell victim to the curse of high expectations. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Now, as we start this next generation, we'll be seeing models run on 100,000 Blackwell chips — and scaling is still in effect. Huang's argument is that going beyond 100,000 Blackwell chips will yield even more capable models. It's a fair question to ask because Nvidia's stock has historically taken a pretty big hit when its customers – such as cloud-computing providers – start uttering that phrase.

The holiday season is also shorter this year and parts of the U.S. have had unseasonably warm weather, two dynamics that could hurt retailers. The big box retailer posted an earnings and revenue beat on Tuesday, impressing Wall Street and sending the stock to a new 52-week high, up 3% by the close. Walmart highlighted growth in its e-commerce segment and advertising business as factors that contributed to its success. But to Cramer, the main reason Walmart's quarter impressed Wall Street is its affordable merchandise and price reductions. Walmart and peer retailers that focus on value — like Amazon and Costco — are what consumers want right now, and these retailers are some of the only ones that can afford large price rollbacks, he added. "There's something going on underneath, something that's hurting every department store, every dollar store, every mall store," Cramer said.

The narrative from Silicon Valley is that the AI train has left the station and any smart investor had better hop on before these products become “superintelligent” and start solving all the world’s problems. Now, some of the leading language models appear to be hitting a wall, according to at least three reports last week. But if we have indeed hit a scaling wall, “it may mean that the the mega-cap technology companies have over-invested” and it’s possible that they could scale back in the near future. That’s the AI optimist/pragmatist view. For a less rosy outlook, I turned to Gary Marcus, NYU professor emeritus and outspoken critic of AI hype.

Shares of some aerospace and defense companies could fall under added pressure from President-elect Donald Trump's reduced government spending plans. Goldman is forecasting that the U.S. defense budget will soon flatten out and then decline, partly given that it's at an all-time high and that current geopolitical conflicts could potentially be met with a resolution. "Defense spending cycles up and down over time, and can be vulnerable to efforts to reduce total government spending." Poponak noted that although Trump has expressed broad support for the U.S. military and Department of Defense, any cost-cutting effort could still be a blow for the national defense budget. "Lower defense spending would flow to government IT to some degree.
