Walking past empty pews and stained-glass windows, the Rev. Victor Cyrus-Franklin, pastor of Inglewood First United Methodist Church in Inglewood, Calif., talked about how housing prices were threatening his flock. As Mr. Cyrus-Franklin spoke, a 78-year-old man named Bill Dorsey was a few yards away in an outdoor corridor that led to the chapel, amid tarps and piles of clothes. “We know their stories and we know how hard it is to find housing,” Mr. Cyrus-Franklin said. The richest 0.1% of Americans own $1.8 trillion in real estate, according to the Federal Reserve. Currently, individuals and married couples can gift or bequeath $13.61 million and $27.22 million, respectively, before a 40% federal estate tax kicks in. Here are nine little-known techniques that wealthy real estate owners use to pay less to Uncle Sam:Qualified personal residence trusts, better known as "QPRTs," effectively freeze the value of a real estate property for tax purposes. With an FLP, an individual — often a parent or two parents — pools their business assets, commonly real estate or stocks. The heirs don't own the trust assets, but rather have lifetime rights to the trust's income and real estate.

At the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, anti-Vietnam War protesters clashed with police officers — whose brutal role in the confrontation was later described by a federal commission as a “police riot” — hijacking the focus of the convention. Those young demonstrators had come of age seeing continual — and effective — protests during the civil rights movement and national mourning after the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. The movement against it began mostly on college campuses and grew. Of course, semesters end and students go home for the summer. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was stabbed with a seven-inch steel letter opener. The woman who stabbed him was named Izola Ware Curry. The many Izola Ware Currys in New York today are far more likely to find themselves in jail, or relegated to street corners and subway stations, than they are to receive comprehensive treatment. This disconnect can set the stage for people with mental illness to be both victims and perpetrators of real violence. Mental illness isn’t a crime, and jail isn’t the answer for those experiencing it.

Roxane Gay on the Open Letter - The New York Times

Open letters are not new; they have served as rhetorical tools for at least two centuries, from Émile Zola’s “J’accuse” to the Rev. Open letters are persuasive arguments, but they are also entreaties. Please, hear me, the writers of open letters implore. I am not a fan of open letters, though I recognize their value. The open letter, as a genre is, in this way, far too limited.

Analyst Ryan MacWilliams upgraded the Australian-American software company, which develops and maintains software and provisions software hosting services, to overweight from equal weight. He raised his price target by $40 to $275, which implies 34.3% upside from Wednesday's close. In early February, the company beat second-quarter earnings and revenue estimates and gave positive fiscal 2024 guidance concerning its cloud and data center revenue growth. He indicated expectations for roughly 80% to 90% of the company's data center customers to migrate to cloud within the next three years. The analyst's upside case assumes roughly 28% revenue growth in 2024, which he thinks could happen if Atlassian continues to invest in its in-house revenue generators or pursues external portfolio additions.

Cecil Murray, a minister who turned a struggling church in Los Angeles into one of the country’s largest congregations, then made it a base to combat the many ills facing the city’s Black population — most notably during and after the 1992 riots — died on Friday at his home in the View Park-Windsor Hills section of Los Angeles. The death was announced by the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California, where he had taught after retiring from the church. When Mr. Murray arrived at First African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1977, it was both storied and troubled: It was the oldest Black church west of the Mississippi, but it was loaded in debt and attracted just a few hundred congregants. Mr. Murray, known as Chip, brought new life to the church. Within a decade he had retired the church’s debt and brought attendance up to about 7,000.

CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday blasted a convicted January 6 rioter for downplaying the US Capitol attack and using the kind of revisionist rhetoric that former President Donald Trump often uses on the campaign trial. “This cannot become normal… We cannot condone the normalization of the January 6 US Capitol riot,” US District Judge Royce Lamberth said while sentencing Taylor James Johnatakis to more than seven years in prison. He did not reference Trump by name while sentencing Johnatakis, but the comparisons were clear. According to evidence presented at trial, Johnatakis attended Trump’s rally on January 6 and then threatened to “break down doors” while marching toward the Capitol. He has been defiant about his actions, saying in a recent interview that “we did nothing” on January 6, and writing about the “injustice” that he and other Capitol riot defendants are facing behind bars.

Daniel A. Moore Sr., who created a pioneering African American history museum in Atlanta when such initiatives were rare, died on March 4 in Decatur, Ga. His death, in a hospital, was confirmed by his son Dan Moore Jr.Mr. Moore started his eclectic collection of artifacts in 1978 and in 1984 moved it to a handsome 1910 brick building on Auburn Avenue, known as “Sweet Auburn” for its centrality to African American history. The building, which had been a schoolbook depository and a tire warehouse, was “erected brick by brick by African American masons,” the museum says. Mr. Moore took a longer view, though memories of the civil rights movement were still fresh when he was getting started, with help from a handful of well-off patrons and from Fulton County, which donated the land. Unlike the King Center, his focus was on the whole African American experience, from Africa to the Middle Passage, and from enslavement to the civil rights campaign and beyond.
