Dean Phillips Halts Long-Shot Presidential Bid
  + stars: | 2024-03-06 | by ( Chris Cameron | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota suspended his long-shot campaign for the Democratic nomination on Wednesday and endorsed President Biden. We will continue the important work to ensure a more responsive, democratic, and generationally diverse political system,” he wrote in a post on X. That’s Joe Biden.”Mr. Phillips, Mr. Biden’s most significant Democratic rival, had entered the race in October — in the absence of other serious primary challengers — after publicly arguing for months that the president was a weak candidate. Spending millions of his own money on his campaign, Mr. Phillips, one of the wealthiest members of Congress, pointed to Mr. Biden’s age and low approval numbers as signs that voters wanted a younger, new generation of leaders. But while voters have indeed repeatedly indicated that they do not want a rematch between Mr. Biden and Donald J. Trump, they have also indicated a lack of interest in Mr. Phillips as a Democratic alternative.

Harnessing the chatbot's voice feature is a hack suggested by Simon Taylor , a former talent recruiter at Disney and Amazon-owned tech startup Graphiq. He told CNBC Make IT he'd tested it out and found the questions ChatGPT asked were "spot on." Taylor says the first step is pasting the job description into ChatGPT and telling it "I want to conduct a mock interview based on this job description." He said the hack is one way to practice answering potential job interview questions.

Fewer Americans are moving within the US, and boomer homeowners in more expensive states may explain why. Over the last few decades, US internal migration has fallen substantially. Census data shows internal migration has slowed since the 1970s amid deindustrialization and a weaker economy. "This suggests that declining internal migration is due to changes in structural aspects of migration choice, which affect individuals and families of many different backgrounds," the authors wrote. Net migration has been strongest out of California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, which have relatively high wages and housing prices.

5 tips for navigating childhood obesity
  + stars: | 2024-02-24 | by ( Andrea Kane | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Editor’s note: Season 9 of the podcast “Chasing Life With Dr. Sanjay Gupta” explores the intersection between body weight and health. With children, doctors define obesity a bit differently than they do with adults. Severe obesity is having a BMI equal to or greater than the 120th percentile. “Most people who are heavy by the age of 5 or 6 will tend to continue to have problems with body weight throughout adolescence and into adulthood,” Yanovski said. “We know that those individuals will therefore accrue the greatest risks from their higher body (fat) because they’re going to continue to have high body weight throughout the years,” he said.

The Tesla Cybertruck is impressive and worrying

Then, in 2019, Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Cybertruck, a bare metal box on wheels. Even when I parked a rented Tesla Cybertruck next to a hot-pink McLaren supercar in a shopping center parking lot in California, the people in the McLaren couldn’t stop talking about the Cybertruck. Peter Valdes-Dapena/CNNThe Tesla Cybertruck looks like nothing else on the road. There’s a lot to like about the Cybertruck, but it also embodies a disturbing level of individual arrogance in hard, unforgiving steel. The Tesla Cybertruck's simple interior is nice enough but, with hardly any switches or knobs, this is the easy part.

The increasing popularity of "gentle parenting" has launched a new buzzword into the child-rearing landscape: co-regulation. Co-regulation refers to an adult helping a child soothe their own emotions during a stressful incident. Instead of admonishing them, gentle parenting, also known as responsive parenting, calls for the caretaker to co-regulate, which means providing empathy and modeling calmness. And, according to child psychologists, kids who can better handle their emotions are more likely to be resilient and thrive in stressful environments. Unlike gentle parenting, authoritative parenting styles assume that a child misbehaving stems from a negative, self-aware place, Delahooke says.

But as my fellow friendship expert Danielle Bayard-Jackson argues, the most toxic friends often use crafty and underhanded forms of aggression. When you tell a friend you're hurt, responsiveness looks like them trying to understand why and adjusting their behavior. In a toxic friendship, they may instead say things like "Can't you take a joke?" As you get close to someone, you begin to include them in your sense of self, so what hurts them hurts you and what makes them happy makes you happy. Even if they want to end a friendship, friends should show regard for you by telling you explicitly.

The report listed technology as a driver behind our isolation, fear of missing out, conflict, and reduced social interaction. Other drivers of loneliness included social policies, cultural norms, the political environment, and macroeconomic factors. In fact, most research demonstrates that loneliness increases with increased use of technology, especially social media sites." "The response is incredible," Kyle Rand, CEO and cofounder of Rendever, told BI. SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A conservative group has told a Georgia judge that it doesn't have evidence to support its claims of illegal ballot stuffing during the the 2020 general election and a runoff two months later. In their written response, attorneys for True the Vote said the group had no names or other documentary evidence to share. The election board subpoenaed True the Vote to provide evidence that would assist it in investigating the group's ballot trafficking allegations. She and another member of the group were briefly jailed in 2022 for contempt for not complying with a court order to provide information in a defamation lawsuit. In addition to names, the judge ordered True the Vote to provide copies of any confidentiality agreements it had with sources.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate voted Wednesday to put a politically appointed board in control of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, a change proposed after some lawmakers were upset about the department hosting a lecture on LGBTQ+ history. State senators also approved legislation that would allow local government officials to dismiss library board members they appointed if they become displeased with their performance. He said the change would ensure board members are responsive to elected officials. Board members are selected by a vote of the trustees and confirmed by the Alabama Senate. Elliott said existing state law gives city councils the ability to appoint library board members but currently gives no mechanism for removal.

Michelle Lujan Grisham has advocated for a more robust spending package, a 10% annual spending increase that would shore up housing opportunities, childhood literacy and health care access. Senate budget amendments apply $75 million in state matching funds to the effort. Under another $1.5 million budget provision, New Mexico would for the first time help compensate landowners and agricultural producers when wolves are confirmed to have killed livestock or working animals. The fund underwrites an array of conservation programs at state natural resources agencies, from soil enhancement programs in agriculture to conservation of threatened and big-game species. The Legislature's budget bill would place $512 million in the trust.

Sexual function — which includes factors like desire, arousal and pleasure — in men and women decreased significantly after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a January 2022 meta-analysis of 21 studies published in the journal BMC Public Health. And women — even more so than men — struggled when it came to desire. Many people, particularly women, tend to experience what is called responsive arousal as opposed to spontaneous arousal, she said. And the data showed that men were more likely than women to seek professional help for the sexual problems they experienced, he said. “Unfortunately, I think we’ve sort of normalized sexual difficulties for women,” he added.

In July Michael Puglia drove home with what seemed like the coolest vehicle he’d ever own — a Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. It was big enough to haul around his children and all their hockey gear. Once, after Mr. Puglia had driven 35 miles to an ice rink, his range fell by 73 miles. Another time, a 60-mile jaunt reduced his range by 110 miles. Several trips to the dealership for software updates didn’t fix the problem, leaving Mr. Puglia wondering whether he should keep the $79,000 truck.

New York CNN —For the past few years, Coca-Cola has experimented with wacky limited-time offerings, but its latest flavor is its first permanent addition in a while. Coca-Cola Spiced is a new soda that blends the “iconic taste” of Coke with a “burst of refreshing notes from raspberry and spiced flavors,” the company announced Wednesday. Coke doesn’t often add new permanent flavors to its lineup: Spiced joins just a few other flavors it always sells, including its flagship flavor, cherry and vanilla. “It appears Coca-Cola is looking to splice that trend onto its flagship with hopes of getting young consumers to consider the entire franchise,” he told CNN. The real question, then, is if Congress fails to act, should the administrative agencies be the second choice or the courts. I am confident that the administrative agencies are the better choice. Courts are not experts and are not responsive to the electorate. By contrast, administrative agency heads are appointed by the current president, who, the Electoral College notwithstanding, is responsive to the will of the people. Moreover, unlike judges, administrative agencies have true subject matter expertise, and that was the entire premise of the Chevron decision, as noted by no less a jurist than Justice Antonin Scalia.
