CNN —On a night Republicans projected bravado around their 2024 presidential ticket, Donald Trump started his prime-time address by displaying a rare vulnerability. The former president’s son Eric Trump delivered conservative red meat, much like his brother Donald Trump Jr. had a night earlier. Little mention of Biden (by name)Trump said Thursday night that he would use Biden’s name only once. Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. And especially so on its final night, when the politicians mostly gave way to right-leaning celebrities.

A call with Vice President Kamala Harris struggled to reassure major donors that there was little to worry about. More than 25 million people watched former President Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention. The delegates in front of former President Trump were euphoric. Everyone there, from the show runners to Hulk Hogan to Melania Trump, had nailed their role in a glitzy production aimed at returning Trump to the real Oval Office. “I’d better finish strong,” Trump said, nearly 45 minutes into his acceptance speech.

The crowds inside the hall in downtown Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention this week reflected the mood of the party: unified, abundant, exhilarated. If the state of the opposition could be summed up by the demonstrations outside the arena, it was quite the opposite: disjointed, sparse, gloomy. Protests through the week in Milwaukee have appeared far smaller and less energetic than those at past national conventions. At the last in-person Republican convention, in 2016, a coalition of protesters rallied in Cleveland for days, angry over the nomination of former President Donald J. Trump. That week was marked by scuffles, standoffs with police and the burning of an American flag outside the convention hall.

WASHINGTON — Members of President Joe Biden's family have discussed what an exit from his campaign might look like, according to two people familiar with the discussions. Biden's family members have specifically discussed how he would want to end his re-election bid on his own timing and with a carefully calculated plan in place. White House spokesman Andrew Bates denied that any such exit discussions are happening amongst the family. Among the reports: that longtime speechwriter and historian Jon Meacham was penning Biden's exit remarks. Amid the turmoil the Biden campaign sent out talking points to Democrats, according to a Democratic strategies: "President Biden has not spoken to congressional leadership today.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump said he “had a very good phone call” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. It also comes amid concerns in Europe about what Trump’s policy toward the Russia-Ukraine war would be if he were to win the presidential election in November. “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today. Trump and Zelensky also have their own history. Last week, when Zelensky was in the US, he said that “everyone is waiting for November,” including Putin.

President Vladimir V. Putin’s strategy for defeating Ukraine can be summed up in one revealing moment in his February interview with the former television host Tucker Carlson. Addressing the possibility of heightened U.S. involvement in Ukraine, the Russian leader asked Americans: “Don’t you have anything better to do?”After several tumultuous weeks in American politics, Mr. Putin appears closer than ever to getting the answer he seeks. President Biden, Ukraine’s most important ally, is engulfed in the biggest political crisis of his tenure, with calls from fellow Democrats to withdraw from the presidential race. Former President Donald J. Trump, favored in the polls, has picked as his running mate one of the loudest critics of American aid to Kyiv. And at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, Mr. Trump renewed his pledge to end the fighting and channeled Mr. Putin in warning of “World War III.”

Trump on the fourth day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Credit... Hiroko Masuike/The New York TimesFormer President Donald J. Trump accepted his party’s nomination during the final night of the Republican National Convention on Thursday, delivering a freewheeling, factually challenged and often ad-libbed speech. Mr. Trump began by describing in detail the assassination attempt that left him with a bandaged ear. Then, he essentially staged a campaign rally, repeating familiar boasts and delving into a cascade of false and misleading claims about his own record and the state of the border, the economy and the world. Here’s a fact-check of his remarks.

Former President Donald J. Trump began his prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday with a message of unity, presenting a softer image of himself that appeared aimed at courting undecided voters. But then he went on for an hour and a half, a long verbal walk through the kinds of exaggerations about his record and attacks on Democrats that have become familiar to voters from Mr. Trump’s previous two campaigns and presidency. For a group of undecided voters from around the country, who are sharing their thoughts on key moments in the race with The New York Times, the effect was not strong. Some found the speech off-putting. “I still don’t know what I’m going to do,” said Sharon Reed, 77, a retired teacher-turned-farmer in rural Pennsylvania who previously voted for Mr. Trump but is torn this year.

After over four decades of tabloid celebrity, reality-TV stardom and presidential politics, you would think this would be a settled question. But after his near assassination in Pennsylvania, the Republican National Convention teased that the former president was going to unveil a softer, changed version of himself. The answer was: Yes, and yes. It led to Mr. Trump’s taking the stage with a new, somber voice as he recounted his brush with death. The introductory hours of the night featured a rotation of admirers, heavily male, who cited Mr. Trump’s close call and defiant survival as testimony to his macho fighting spirit.

CNN —The US Secret Service is scrambling to increase security ahead of former President Donald Trump’s first campaign rally since the failed assassination attempt on his life last week, sources familiar with the planning told CNN. “We assist the Secret Service,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told CNN, adding that the Secret Service was leading all security planning for the rally. The source said the lack of these exercises have resulted in security gaps, including communication breakdowns between law enforcement partners. “The Secret Service is responsible for the security planning for presidential visits, but we stand ready to assist them with whatever they need,” Banner wrote in an email. The Secret Service would not comment on security planning for the rally or Trump.

Unity, after all, has been a key message espoused by President Joe Biden. "I had all prepared an extremely tough speech, really good, all about the corrupt, horrible administration," Trump told the Post. Just over 26 minutes into his speech, Trump was praising his supporters and family when he veered abruptly back into attacks on his opponents. JD Vance speaks at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 17. Will Lanzoni/CNNMany of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. His nomination puts an end to the hopes by some of America’s allies that Trump might soften his foreign policy stance if reelected.

Five days after a gunman tried to assassinate him at a political rally, former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday night described his personal experience of the shooting as he formally accepted the Republican Party’s presidential nomination and called on Americans to see in him a unifier. “As you already know, the assassin’s bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking my life,” Mr. Trump said at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. He was lucky, he said, he had not turned further. “I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” Mr. Trump said. The crowd, devoted fans of a man they had nominated to be their presidential candidate, responded in unison by chanting, “Yes, you are.”

As the Democratic Party mulls how to respond to the rhetoric emerging from the Republican National Convention this week, I dearly hope it does not continue to describe Donald Trump as a threat to democracy. That’s not because I disagree with that assessment or even because Trump just survived a horrifying attempt on his life. It has a noble ring to it, but outside of a classroom or seminar, what does it mean, exactly? “Democracy” is built from Greek roots: The “demo” part means “people,” while the “cracy” part means “power.” That’s a vivid combination — if you know Ancient Greek. If Democrats want voters to understand how Trump threatens this ideal, instead of saying it in Greek, it would be more effective to speak English.

Hamas’s brutal massacre in Israel and Israel’s retaliatory war in Gaza crashed into the Republican National Convention in prime time Wednesday night, as former President Donald J. Trump’s Republican Party moved to make Israel’s fight its own — and to further fracture the Democratic Party’s longstanding bond with American Jews. A coterie of fresh-faced fraternity brothers from the University of North Carolina was invited onstage to be celebrated for defending the American flag from pro-Palestinian protesters who had tried to take it down. An Orthodox Jewish student from Harvard, Shabbos Kestenbaum, castigated the Democratic Party he once supported as “ideologically poisoned” by “far-left antisemitic extremism.”And Orna and Ronen Neutra, the parents of an American citizen still held by Hamas in Gaza, led the crowd in a chant of “bring them home,” after recounting how Mr. Trump had called them after their son was taken hostage.

To reread "Hillbilly Elegy" now, as I did this week, is to feel a sense of disorientation. JD Vance the author sounds a lot different than JD Vance the politician. Personally, I first read "Hillbilly Elegy" in college, in an earnest if somewhat contrived attempt to better understand communities unlike mine. On stage, he recounted a story that also appears in "Hillbilly Elegy," where Mamaw bluntly threatens violence against one of Vance's friends. There are hints of this in "Hillbilly Elegy" as well: He served as a public affairs Marine, where he was trained in the art of media relations, including "how stay on message."

CNN —The final night of the Republican National Convention has kicked off in Milwaukee. Pompeo’s claim about the southern border under TrumpFormer Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed at the Republican National Convention Thursday that the US-Mexico border was “closed” during Donald Trump’s presidency. Facts First: This characterization of Trump’s tariffs is misleading. It’s true that Trump’s tariffs on China raised billions of dollars for the US government, but the duties were paid by US companies – not China. For example, Trump’s tariffs were imposed, in part, to boost the US manufacturing sector – but that industry lost jobs.
