But a group of e-cigarette users are suddenly finding themselves with a little extra cash, thanks to a massive class action settlement involving one of America's tobacco giants. In online forums and on social media this week, users of Juul Labs nicotine products have been posting screenshots of online deposits for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars that they now have access to. Juul agreed to a settlement in 2022, but the Altria settlement, which was needed to kickstart payouts, was not approved until earlier this year. And it was only this month that claims for the approximately 842,000 eligible Juul customers began to be verified. Vaping remains mired in controversy in the U.S., as e-cigarette companies and federal regulators continue to haggle over the products’ health effects and marketing guardrails.

A man whom authorities named the “Penguin Bandit” was sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison last week after robbing multiple banks in the Denver, Colorado area. The teller told Ruthstrom that he activated a “distress system” in the cash dispenser which gives out $400 in twenty-dollar bills and triggers a hold-up alarm. According to the complaint, Ruthstrom asked for more money, so the teller did this two more times and gave him a total of $1,200 before he left. London CNN —Paddington Bear, probably fiction’s best-known Peruvian, has been granted a passport by authorities in his adoptive country of Britain. Rob Silva, co-producer of the upcoming film “Paddington in Peru,” revealed the existence of the British passport in an interview with Radio Times magazine published Monday. In the film, the third in the hit series, the little bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) travels home to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy. The movie is inspired by the work of late children’s author Michael Bond, who created the character of Paddington Bear in 1958 book “A Bear Called Paddington,” which follows the adventures of a small orphaned bear as he travels from Peru to the British capital. “Paddington in Peru” follows his return to his homeland to visit his Aunt Lucy (voiced by Imelda Staunton) after he is issued with a passport.

The parent company of TikTok says it has dismissed an intern that it found to have "maliciously interfered" with its artificial intelligence technology effort. In a statement in Chinese released Monday, the parent company, ByteDance, said the intern in question had committed a "serious violation" against its commercial technology team's "research project." In particular, the intern's actions affected ByteDance's AI training program, the company said. In the AI world, companies attempt to program an AI application by "training" it on vast amounts of data to recognize patterns, understand context, and make decisions — in other words, "learn." It is not clear what aspect of the AI model the intern is accused of interfering with.
