Trump's stance could have major implications for Taiwan's dominance in semiconductor chip manufacturing should any potential conflict arise between Taiwan and China. And such a scenario would likely have a cataclysmic effect on the US economy should the global chip supply chain be disrupted. And Taiwan's microchip production is anchored by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, a global powerhouse. A recent report released by the Semiconductor Industry Association revealed that America's share of global chip manufacturing is set to increase to 14% by 2032. After Trump's latest remarks about Taiwan and the potential for tighter trade curbs on China, global chip stocks fell, with notable declines for Nvidia, TSMC, and Qualcomm, among others.

Can Boeing get back to its glory days?

Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.

Nvidia's rise came after TSMC said on Thursday that demand remains high and supply remains constrained for high-end AI chips, which TSMC manufactures for Nvidia. Today, the demand is so high I had to work very hard to meet customer demand," Wei told analysts. On Wednesday, the semiconductor sector had its worst day since 2020, with big drops from AMD , Arm , Broadcom and Qualcomm alongside Nvidia. A Chinese invasion would throw Nvidia's chip supply into question. Nvidia stock is up more than 150% so far in 2024.

Global chip stocks fell sharply, with ASML , Nvidia and TSMC posting declines amid reports of tighter export restrictions from the U.S. and a ramp-up of geopolitical tensions fueled by comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump. ASML's Netherlands-listed shares were down 11%, while Tokyo Electron shares in Japan closed nearly 7.5% lower. The moves came after Bloomberg on Wednesday reported that the Biden administration is considering a wide-sweeping rule to clamp down on companies exporting their critical chipmaking equipment to China. Washington's foreign direct product rule, or FDPR, allows the U.S. to put controls on foreign-made products even if they use the smallest amount of American technology. Jefferies has identified a lesser-known and potentially undervalued Taiwanese company poised to benefit from the growing artificial intelligence sector. The investment bank said Insyde Software, listed on the Taipei Exchange, is well positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for AI-enabled personal computers and servers. Jefferies initiated coverage of Insyde with a research note titled "Firmware Leader and Yet-to-be Discovered AI Play" on July 9 with a "Buy" rating and a price target that suggests a potential 42% upside from current levels. However, the stock has already risen by more than 30% since the ratings action, according to FactSet data, which shows the stock currently offers 17% upside potential. Founded in 1998, Insyde has established itself in the firmware industry, commanding over 50% market share in the personal computer segment, Jefferies suggests.

"Doing anything first-party is a challenge relationship-wise," said a former Google AR team member. There is internal speculation that Samsung will be the first to also build glasses with Google's AR software, according to two employees familiar with the matter. Without a device of its own and with its AR software still in development, Google now finds itself on the back foot.

While it isn't a given that CEO Jensen Huang shows up at Nvidia's meeting, any commentary could provide an impetus for the stocks. Meeks noted that recent comments from Huang about AI chips during a trip to Asia spurred a bounce in shares. Comments could boost sentiment and convince investors the chip behemoth has yet to reach peak revenue, he added. Meeks called the selloff in chip stocks overdone, viewing a long-term runway for the AI theme at a reasonable valuation.

Since briefly becoming the world's most valuable company last week, Nvidia has dropped for three consecutive trading days and is now down 13% from its peak. Nvidia's decline brought with it a slide in chipmakers and other tech companies that have been tied to the artificial intelligence boom. Super Micro Computer , which sells servers packed with Nvidia's AI chips, slid 8.7 percent, and Dell , which competes in that market, fell 5.2%. Last week, it topped Apple and Microsoft as the most valuable U.S. company with a market capitalization over $3 trillion before giving up some of those gains. Later this year, Nvidia will start shipping its next-generation AI chips, called Blackwell, that some analysts say could kick off another cycle with significant growth for the chipmaker and its partners.
