Read previewAmazon's recent decision to stop accepting new users for several cloud services caught some customers, partners and even a few employees by surprise. No new customers, no new featuresFor a business as important as AWS, deprioritizing services is a tricky balancing act. However, at the scale of AWS, this still means that thousands of developers and other customers likely still rely on these cloud tools. "We will continue to support our customers, whether they continue to use these services, or they migrate to other AWS offerings or alternative third-party solutions." Consider Amazon Q, Amazon Connect, Amazon Bedrock, AWS Marketplace, Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon SageMaker, Amazon QuickSight, and many other offerings that have had significant success with customers," he wrote in an email.

The New York Times reviewed dozens of expense reports and receipts from January 2022 through June 2023, as well as employment agreements, tax filings, audit reports and other financial documents to detail a pattern of lavish spending at the nonprofit organization GLAAD, one of the country’s leading L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy groups. Such perks, luxurious business travel and large pay packages might be commonplace at a for-profit company. But legal experts said they were inappropriate for a nonprofit organization with about 60 employees that, in exchange for being exempt from federal and state taxes, must ensure that executive pay is reasonable and aligned with the charity’s mission and the intent of donors. The spending, much of it by GLAADs chief executive Sarah Kate Ellis, may have violated the organization’s own policies as well as Internal Revenue Service rules, the Times reporting shows.

The natural-parenting movement, like the anti-vaccine movement, relies on our forgetfulness about what life was like before the innovations that it denounces. Also like the anti-vaccine movement, the natural-parenting movement is a reaction to very real failures in our medical system, which has more than earned people’s distrust. Natural parenting has since been thoroughly secularized, but it still preaches something akin to spiritual transcendence through female sacrifice. Even if you distrust the natural-parenting movement, its pressures are hard to escape. If the natural-parenting movement really cared about children, it would do some introspection about how often it makes their parents miserable.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks on Day 4 of the Republican National Convention (RNC), at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., July 18, 2024. Donald Trump is set to field reporters' questions at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, as he re-tools his presidential campaign to combat his likely rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. The Republican nominee's Q&A before a live convention audience is expected to focus on the biggest issues facing the Black community, NABJ said. The event gives Trump, who won just 12% of Black voters in his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden, an opportunity to directly appeal to voters of color. The decision by NABJ, the nation's largest association of journalists of color, to host Trump quickly spurred a backlash both inside and outside the group.

When Lady Gaga released “Born This Way,” the 2011 song on an album of the same name, it was an instant hit and an instant L.G.B.T.Q. “Born this way” may, unfortunately, have been an oversimplification. Just last year, Rolling Stone crowned “Born This Way” the most inspirational L.G.B.T.Q. “Born this way,” as both a scientific concept and a political ideology, was easy to understand, accept and digest.

Around 24 hours after President Biden made his stunning exit from the presidential race, Pete Buttigieg gathered about 100 of his past donors on a Zoom call. The call, according to the invitation and to three participants who described it on the condition of anonymity because it was private, was meant to rally his influential benefactors to raise money for Vice President Kamala Harris. But Mr. Buttigieg, the transportation secretary and a 2020 presidential candidate, made an admission during the Q. and A. that struck at least one person on the call as unusually candid, a message he would bring to television in the ensuing days: Yes, of course he was interested in being Ms. Harris’s running mate if it were on the table. After he spoke, some people on the call said they would love to see him join the ticket and encouraged listeners to put in a good word for him with members of Ms. Harris’s orbit, one participant recalled.

Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union sent 300 high school students to Capitol Hill to lobby against the Kids Online Safety Act, a bill meant to protect children online. The teenagers told the staffs of 85 lawmakers that the legislation could censor important conversations, particularly among marginalized groups like L.G.B.T.Q. “Regardless of your political perspective, this looks like a censorship bill.”The effort was one of many escalations in recent months by those who oppose the bill. In June, a progressive nonprofit, Fight for the Future, organized students to write hundreds of letters to urge lawmakers to scrap it. Conservative groups like Patriot Voices, founded by the former Republican senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, are also protesting with an online petition.

More than 10,500 athletes from some 200 countries will participate in the Olympic Games in Paris, but only 15 of them will be from Russia. Back in Russia, the competition will not be shown on television for the first time since 1984. And media commentators expressed disgust that a drag queen carried the Olympic torch — which is antithetical to Russia’s increasing emphasis on what it calls “traditional values” and its crackdown on L.G.B.T.Q. It’s quite a comedown for Russia, a traditional Olympic powerhouse that for years used the competition as a way to project power and foster national pride, and often finished first in the final medal count. And it represents the price the country is paying for its invasion of Ukraine two years ago and the daily mayhem it inflicts there.

Mark Zuckerberg explains his hiring philosophy
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Ana Altchek | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +3 min
But Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview with Bloomberg's Emily Chang published Tuesday that the most important thing is "learning how to think critically and learning values when you're young." Zuckerberg said in the interview that his "hiring philosophy" follows this line of thought. It's not the first time the CEO has talked about considering a candidate's values when hiring. While Zuckerberg may have a strict standard for hiring candidates, the tech giant has slowed its hiring compared to the pandemic-era growth. Zuckerberg said earlier this year the company would continue to limit its head count and hiring plans would remain "relatively minimal."
