Phnom Penh, Cambodia AP —Thirteen pregnant Philippine women accused of illegally acting as surrogate mothers in Cambodia after being recruited online may face prison terms after they give birth, a senior Interior Ministry official said Saturday. The law was updated in 2016 to ban commercial surrogacy after Cambodia became a popular destination for foreigners seeking women to give birth to their children. The surrogacy business boomed in Cambodia after it was put under tight restrictions in neighboring Thailand, as well as in India and Nepal. But the measures that Beijing’s economic planning agency announced this week proved to be an anticlimax — the trillions of yuan that observers were hoping would be revealed never materialized. Beijing might even miss its annual growth target of 5% — a figure it often surpassed prior to the pandemic. But while Chinese officials project confidence, the markets and the country’s public seem less convinced. Its broader financial lethargy and this week’s market turmoil will hardly be welcomed by Beijing. Costphoto / NurPhoto via Getty ImagesDomestic stimulus aside, there have been outward signs that China’s economy is in trouble.

Taiwan says four Foxconn employees detained in China

Taipei, Taiwan Reuters —Four employees of Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China under “quite strange” circumstances, Taiwan’s government said. The council said Foxconn had stated the company had “suffered no losses and that the four employees had done nothing to harm the company’s interests.”“This has seriously damaged the confidence of companies. Calls to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office seeking comment outside of office hours went unanswered. In June, Taiwan’s government raised its travel warning for China, telling its citizens not to go unless absolutely necessary, following a threat from Beijing to execute those deemed “diehard” Taiwan independence supporters. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the strong objections of the government in Taipei.

Lan Sak, Thailand AP —Mourners wept and monks prayed at a cremation ceremony Tuesday in a small town in central Thailand for 23 young students and teachers who died in last week’s bus fire on a school field trip. A large cremation site was set up close to the temple in Lan Sak town whose compound hosts the school that was attended by the victims. Six teachers and 39 elementary and junior high school students were on the bus when it caught fire on October 1 on a highway in Pathum Thani, a northern suburb of Bangkok. Transport officials were being scrutinized after information emerged that the bus had passed an inspection about four months before the fire. Police believe that a gas tube from one of the canisters had come loose, with sparks then setting the leaking gas on fire.

HAIKOU, CHINA - DECEMBER 17: People purchase brandies during the 26th China (Hainan) International Winter Trade Fair for Tropical Agricultural Products at Hainan International Convention And Exhibition Center on December 17, 2023 in Haikou, Hainan Province of China. China will start to impose provisional anti-dumping measures on brandy products imported from the European Union this week, according to a notice from the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday. Chinese customs officials will collect security deposits from companies that sell brandy originated from the bloc beginning this Friday. The decision reversed a preliminary ruling in late August, when China said it would not impose any anti-dumping measures, despite concluding that European distillers had been selling brandy in China at a 30.6% to 39% margin. "The relevant brandy industry within China has been substantially damaged or threatened," the statement read.

Iran, which is a member of OPEC, is a major player in the global oil market. It's estimated that as much as 4% of global supply could be at risk if Israel targets Iran's oil facilities. For some analysts, the reason crude prices have yet to move even higher is because the oil market is short. watch nowTamas Varga, an analyst at oil broker PVM, told CNBC via email on Thursday that the oil market was pricing in some risk premium given the geopolitical concerns. These fears, however, will be greatly alleviated in [the] coming days unless oil supply from the region or traffic through the Strait of Hormuz are materially impacted," he added.
