Google (GOOGL.O) had asked for summary judgment on all the government's claims in the case, which is to go to trial next month. Google said Friday it appreciated the court's "careful consideration and decision to dismiss claims regarding the design of Google Search" in the case brought by the state attorneys general. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong praised the decision to allow the states Google search antitrust suit to proceed to trial. Mehta noted Google LLC operates the largest U.S. internet general search engine whose "brand name has become so ubiquitous that dictionaries recognize it as a verb." He noted Google in 2020 had nearly 90% market share and advertisers spend over $80 billion annually alone to reach general search users.

And Amazon failed to ensure that injured employees received adequate treatment, the agency said. Separately on Thursday, a worker advocacy group said it had filed a complaint with OSHA on behalf of employees at an Amazon warehouse near St. Louis, Missouri. They claim the online retailer imposes excessive, unsafe work rates and that they were mistreated by Amazon's in-house medical staff. The company has said that it invests millions of dollars in worker safety and has cooperated with OSHA's nationwide investigation. Critics of Amazon have long accused the company of putting profit over safety by requiring employees to work at an unsafe pace and forgo breaks to meet demanding quotas.

For Nissan, that means contending with an increasingly grim outlook for foreign automakers in China, the world's biggest car market. AMPERE INVESTMENTNissan said it would invest up to 600 million euros ($663 million) in Renault's electric vehicle unit, Ampere. Renault, meanwhile, will lower its stake in Nissan to 15% from around 43%, putting their relationship on equal footing. The investment in Ampere is consistent with Nissan being a strategic investor and securing a board seat on the new company, Nissan said. Nissan had flagged in February that it would invest a maximum 15% in Ampere, but the exact size of its stake remained unclear.

Amazon on Wednesday offered commitments to the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority after Britain's competition watchdog raised concerns about the U.S. e-commerce giant's treatment of third-party sellers. One of those commitments proposes to ensure Amazon does not use rival sellers' marketplace data to gain an unfair advantage over other sellers. Amazon's commitments also proposed to guarantee all product offers are treated equally when the company decides which ones will be featured in the "Buy Box." Amazon's marketplace practices were also concerning to European Union regulators that were probing similar issues to the U.K. since 2019. In December, Amazon offered similar commitments to the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, to address its concerns.

Twitter has officially rebranded to "X" after owner Elon Musk changed its iconic bird logo on Monday, marking the latest major shift since his takeover of the social media platform. Twitter's world-renowned bird logo was transformed into an X, however. Asked if the logo would change in a Twitter Spaces audio chat, he said "yes," telling an unknown speaker: "We're cutting the Twitter logo off the building with blow torches." The shift from bird imagery to an "X" is the latest sweeping change since Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last year. The latest changes come as the social media giant continues to face competition from Meta's new app, Threads, which launched earlier this month.

Jane Birkin Gave Women Over 40 Permission to Be Themselves

Following the death of Jane Birkin on Sunday at age 76, Instagram was flooded with photos of the Brit-in-Paris singer in her photogenic 1960s and 1970s youth. She was a style icon everyone could agree on, be they designers such as Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello and Simon Porte Jacquemus to French President Emmanuel Macron . In numerous tributes, we were reminded of her risqué, girlish fashion moments: the lacy dress worn backward, the completely sheer gowns, the denim mini shorts and the straw basket she used as a handbag.

The U.S. Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have mounted an unprecedented number of legal challenges to mergers since Biden came to office in 2021. The Justice Department lost a merger in the insurance industry but won an effort to stop a book publisher merger. Deal advisers said companies had already braced for a tough antitrust regime under Biden and some had been emboldened by the regulators' recent court losses. "The (regulators' guidelines) do provide more transparency but that transparency also reveals some concerns that they are quite hostile to consolidation. The new antitrust guidelines also reflect the White House's focus on labor issues.

REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/WASHINGTON, July 19 (Reuters) - New draft guidelines released by U.S. antitrust enforcers on Wednesday lay the groundwork for tougher scrutiny of planned mergers by Big Tech companies like Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O). The Biden administration has taken a tougher stance on mergers, filing some aggressive challenges. The Biden administration's antitrust enforcement has highlighted labor issues, and the guidelines reflect that. The guidelines reflect how the FTC and Justice Department currently enforce laws against illegal mergers, which would replace guidelines from 2010 on companies buying competitors and 2020 guidelines on companies merging with suppliers. President Joe Biden urged that the guidelines be updated in a mid-2021 executive order.

Former Twitter employees in Ghana, who were laid off in November, have been left without severance pay and have not heard from the company for three months, sources told CNBC. As part of new owner Elon Musk's cost-cutting efforts, Twitter fired nearly all of the staff at its only office in Africa. Under Ghanaian employment law, staff must be paid redundancy and should be granted three months' notice before they are made redundant. "Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else," Musk wrote in response to a tweet. Musk took over Twitter in October of last year in a deal valued at around $44 billion, including about $13 billion in debt. He also claimed at that time that the company was "roughly breakeven," and expected to become cash flow positive within the next quarter. A number of widely followed accounts on Twitter posted that they were dismayed they did not qualify to earn income from the program yet. It's not clear how much Twitter paid creators in total in this first round of payments.

The event was billed as a conversation about the future of AI and came on a day that Musk launched his own new AI company, xAI. He said the idea that a "digital superintelligence" could supplant the Chinese Communist Party itself seemed to resonate. Elon Musk's X Corp., the parent company of Twitter, filed a lawsuit against four unknown entities last week over data scraping on Twitter. Data scraping is when automated programs scour publicly accessible websites to collect data, which can later be used for a wide range of purposes, including training artificial intelligence large language models, targeting online advertisements and much more. The ruling reaffirmed the appeals court's decision, finding that scraping public data does not violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. "Corp. has also limited access to Tweets for users who are not signed in to registered Twitter account." "By unlawfully scaping data, Defendants flagrantly ignore not only Corp.'s Terms of Service, but also the privacy preferences of Twitter users," the filing stated.

Tesla must send extensive new records to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration as part of an Autopilot safety probe — or else face steep fines. The agency initiated an investigation into Autopilot safety in 2021 after it identified a string of crashes in which Tesla vehicles using Autopilot had collided with stationary first responders' vehicles and road work vehicles. Instead, Tesla vehicles require a driver behind the wheel, ready to steer or brake at any time. The company's FSD Beta consists of driver assistance features that have been tested internally but have not been fully debugged. Tesla uses its customers as software and vehicle safety testers via the FSD Beta program, rather than relying on professional safety drivers, as is the industry standard.

Twitter's lawyer wrote a letter to Facebook parent Meta on Wednesday, accusing the company of "systematic" and "unlawful misappropriation" of trade secrets following the launch of its Threads service. The letter from longtime Elon Musk attorney Alex Spiro alleged that Meta's new Twitter clone was built by former Twitter employees "deliberately assigned" to develop a "copycat" app. Spiro offered no concrete examples of Twitter employees using trade secrets to build the app, which notched millions of users within hours of its launch. "No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee," Andy Stone, Meta communications director, posted on Threads. Spiro said Meta is "expressly prohibited" from crawling or scraping Twitter's follower data, without providing evidence that Meta has engaged in that activity.

In recent days, Twitter owner Musk and Facebook parent Meta (META.O) CEO Zuckerberg - whose social media platforms duke it out daily for advertising dollars - have been trading bluster about going mano a mano. Musk in recent months has stepped up criticism of Zuckerberg and his companies, and has mocked reported plans by Meta for a platform to rival Twitter. After Musk acquired Twitter in October, many advertisers fled the platform, wary that their promotions could appear alongside inappropriate content after the company laid off thousands of employees and cut costs dramatically. Musk's hiring of Yaccarino, a longtime advertising executive who previously led ad sales at NBCUniversal, was seen as a signal that digital ads remained a priority for Twitter.
