5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Brazilian Jazz

When the term “Brazilian jazz” arises, one might think of bossa nova, or Sergio Mendes (its most popular purveyor), and stop there. But there’s a world beyond those sunny instrumentals and bright vocals, where artists like Hermeto Pascoal, João Donato and Leny Andrade show that Brazilian jazz can be funky, soulful and esoteric. The origins of Brazilian jazz are often traced to the late 1950s, to the advent of bossa nova by the composers Donato and Antônio Carlos Jobim. Thanks to the contributors below, a mix of musicians, writers and scholars, we get to hear Brazilian jazz beyond the gravitational pull of bossa nova and samba, from its height in the ’60s to the present day. Traces of bossa nova and samba emerge, but these selections also take fusion, ambient and psychedelia into account.

CNN —UK and US authorities on Wednesday announced a major crackdown on a pair of billion-dollar money laundering rings that officials say has cleaned money for Russia’s elite, cybercriminals and drug-runners around the world. The Treasury Department on Wednesday announced sanctions on alleged senior leaders of one of the laundering rings, which is known as TGR. CNN —Iran’s parliament has enacted a harsh new modesty law, significantly tightening existing dress restrictions that have already fueled nationwide protests and posed a serious challenge to regime stability. “In my opinion the hijab law, which I have to implement, is vague. It defines improper dress in various ways, ranging from nudity and dressing immodestly to wearing the hijab incorrectly. The law also introduces a system of fines and restrictions with financial penalties, even for initial offenses. But that was a long time ago — all the way back in September — and a quite a lot has changed. What happened in the two-ish months between the Times’ story and today is pretty simple: Trump won reelection, obviously. Trump also welcomed his faithful “first buddy” Elon Musk into his inner circle, where Musk appears to be relishing his role as a kind of gatekeeper for executives hoping to snag an audience with the president-elect, per the Wall Street Journal. To be sure, plenty of companies are still committed to DEI programs, and not all executives are morphing into insufferable suck-ups. At the time, Intel was the world’s largest producer of computer chips, and its technology was housed inside nearly every PC. That means nearly two decades after Grove outlined his vision, Intel is a shell of its former self. And now, investors and company watchers are seriously questioning whether Intel can ever regain its industry-leading position, despite its importance to American chipmaking. And because ARM was ready with the technology, it quickly leapfrogged Intel as the mobile chipmaking leader.
