The life of the marigold, known as the cempasúchil in Mexico, reflects our own: the plant sprouts, grows, flowers and dies. The flowers’ yellow and orange glow is ubiquitous across Mexico every year in the first few days of November, during Day of the Dead, as families place cempasúchil flowers on altars and at cemeteries to create a path to guide their loved ones back home. My grandmother died of Covid in October 2020, just as the cempasúchil began to appear in the markets of Mexico City. A few days later, my cousin Gabriel, who lived with my grandmother, went to buy the materials for her first altar. Did they have the chance to celebrate their loved ones?

Julian Quinones/CNNFormer Trump administration officials have outlined the speed at which they intend to dismantle the progress the Biden administration made on climate change. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the ideological blueprint, but CNN found at least 140 authors worked in the Trump administration. But given the momentum of the clean energy train, some experts and analysists doubt that Trump would be able to derail it entirely. While the green trend in economics now has Republican states like Texas leading the nation in clean energy installations, Germany, Japan and China got there first. Trump’s plan is to undo that progress, throw billions of dollars of clean energy investment out the window and give other countries the economic opportunity, instead.

To be sure, it wasn't the typical beat-and-raise quarter that Linde has become known for over the years. Linde Why we own it: The industrial gas supplier and engineering firm has a stellar track record of consistent earnings growth. It increased to $10 billion thanks to the largest gas project sale in company history. Other companies in the industrial gas space have a shakier track record at this, especially for clean hydrogen projects. TLAXCALA, Mexico — An explosion at a Simec-owned steel plant in Mexico’s central Tlaxcala state in the early hours of Wednesday killed at least 12 people, state authorities said. “At the plant of the steel complex located in the city of Apizaco, Tlaxcala, a liquid steel spill occurred with the loss of human lives, temporarily paralyzing operations,” the firm said in a statement. The state civil protection office said in a social media post that the blast was likely caused after smelting apparatus collapsed. Those killed were workers at the plant, the state prosecutor’s office told Reuters. However, molten steel, when it comes into contact with water, causes an explosion.

But now the organization is turning its attention (and its rats’ noses) to the global illegal wildlife trade. “Unfortunately, organized crime knows there’s a real weak spot in detection methods of ports, seaports and airports, particularly in Africa.”Traffickers disguise wildlife products in a whole host of ways, he explains. This is particularly important given that much of the illicit wildlife trade comes from some of the world’s poorest regions. “I’m hopeful that (using rats) for detecting wildlife will be a low cost, low impact, low footprint operation,” says Allan. The illegal wildlife trade not only impacts populations of the trafficked animal or plant, it can have devastating knock-on consequences for whole ecosystems.

CNN —H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a pig in the United States for the first time, the US Department of Agriculture said Wednesday. The USDA and Oregon veterinary officials are investigating bird flu cases in a backyard farming operation that had a mix of poultry and livestock, including pigs, the agency said. After H5N1 was identified in other animals on the farm, five swine were euthanized for testing; two tested negative, and results are still pending for two others. Some previous flu infections in pigs have allowed influenza viruses to change rapidly and develop new capabilities. Across the United States, more than two dozen people have tested positive for H5N1 flu this year, and nearly all of them have reported exposure to infected dairy cows or chickens, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Israel openly said it conducted “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran. “Israel now has broader aerial freedom of operation in Iran,” Israel’s military spokesman Daniel Hagari said, touting achievements in the attack.
