China is on pace to challenge the U.S. militarily and prevent it from intervening in a crisis with Taiwan, including through Beijing’s increasing stockpile of nuclear warheads, a Pentagon report released Tuesday concluded.
China will “likely field a stockpile of about 1,500 warheads by its 2035 timeline,” concluded the report, which assesses China’s military and security strategy.
Previous editions of the Pentagon’s report, which is mandated by Congress, predicted China would have 1,000 warheads by 2030.
