"In contrast, current valuation extremes imply potential downside risk for the S&P 500 on the order of 50-70% over the completion of this cycle." JPMorgan's Marko Kolanovic expects the S&P 500 to fall to 4,200, while more extreme forecasts include Jeremy Grantham's estimate in the low 3,000s. And as the stock market ground mostly higher, he persisted with his doomsday calls. He predicted in April 2007 that the S&P 500 could lose 40%, then it lost 55% in the subsequent collapse from 2007 to 2009. The S&P 500, by comparison, is up about 26% over the past year.

Washington CNN —Donald Trump used to tell his fans that he’d win so much, they’d get tired of winning. The ex-president’s lawyers are already signaling they will seek to get evidence tossed and obstruction counts against the ex-president dismissed. The court released its decision ahead of an even more critical case that will bear more directly on Trump’s criminal entanglements. A second 2020 election case, in Georgia, is also stalled – partly over a controversy and appeals process triggered by a relationship between District Attorney Fani Willis and a prosecutor she appointed. Trump is only three years younger than Biden and often lapses into gibberish in campaign events.

Mario Tama | Getty ImagesSummer air travel is expected to soar in the United States. Last summer, a record-breaking summer for airports, there were air traffic jams and near collisions amid challenges in flight coordination. Based on air traffic patterns and airport density, New York City and Florida are subject to the highest risk of backups. "There is still a shortage of air traffic controllers, but it hasn't led to the worst outcomes that we were expecting when we were talking about the shortage of air traffic control workers even a year ago." A summer wave of Covid-19 has arrived in the US

CNN —Covid-19 levels have been rising in the United States for weeks as new variants drive what’s become an annual summer surge. That’s enough time to offer protection during the winter respiratory virus season but probably after this summer’s wave has ebbed. On Thursday, the CDC recommended that everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine for the 2024-25 season. Unlike flu and RSV, Covid-19 is constantly circulating; it doesn’t offer a reprieve. The changes are meant to “simplify RSV vaccine decision-making for clinicians and the public,” the agency said.

Bitcoin is testing a key level once again after the cryptocurrency fell below $60,000 this week for the first time since May 3. New York CNN —Airbus cut its target for how many planes it expects to make this year and next, citing supply chain issues. The tighter-than-expected supply of jets is forcing airlines to adjust their expansion plans, even as they deal with record demand for air travel. That means that passengers could find fewer available seats and fares that are higher than they would be otherwise. But airlines that use Airbus planes have not been without problems, as a number of A320neo jets have been grounded due to problems with their engines. Airfares were down 13% to nearly 19% from those 2022 peaks during the summer travel months last year, as the number of available seats on planes rose by about 15% from a year earlier.

Hooters closes dozens of restaurants
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Hooters is the latest chain to close dozens of locations across the United States, blaming tough economic challenges including rising food and labor costs. “Like many restaurants under pressure from current market conditions, Hooters has made the difficult decision to close a select number of underperforming stores,” a spokesperson told CNN. In that time prices ticked up 0.2% at limited service spots, which include fast casual and fast food joints. The increases, particularly in fast food prices, have caused customers to pull back on spending and complain online, eroding the sector’s reputation for affordability. It’s not just Hooters feeling the financial brunt from cash-conscious customers: Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Boston Market, California Pizza Kitchen and bankrupt Red Lobster have all recently closed restaurants.

Bitcoin's recent weakness could be signaling an upcoming correction in stocks, according to Stifel's chief equity analyst Barry Bannister. On Thursday, the S & P 500 briefly touched 5,500 for the first time after notching its most recent record close earlier in the week. "Weakening bitcoin … signals an imminent S & P 500 summer correction and consolidation phase," he said. "With the S & P 500 now at the very high end (2 sigma) of bitcoin post-peak cycle overlays since 2011, we have yet another strong signal that an imminent S & P 500 correction is possible." "Past bubbles since the 19th century indicate the S & P 500 could well rise to ~6,000 at year-end 2024 and then round trip to near where 2024 began five quarters later, by ~1Q26 (S & P 500 ~4,800)."

Oil prices were little changed on Wednesday, staying close to their highest levels in seven weeks as the market weighed concerns over escalating conflicts against demand worries following an unexpected rise in U.S. crude inventories. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down 20 cents to $81.37 per barrel. U.S. crude stocks rose by 2.264 million barrels in the week ended June 14, market sources said on Tuesday, citing American Petroleum Institute figures. However, gasoline inventories fell by 1.077 million barrels, while distillates rose by 538,000 barrels, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. China data this week showed May industrial output lagged expectations, but retail sales, a gauge of consumption, marked their quickest growth since February.

The head of OPEC said Thursday the world will need to invest in fossil fuels for decades to come in order to prevent an energy shortage, dismissing predictions that oil demand will peak in the near future. The OPEC chief called for "continued oil industry investment, today, tomorrow, and many decades into the future given the products derived from crude oil are essential for our daily lives." Oil supply capacity will rise to 114 million per day by 2030, 8 million barrels more than global demand, according to the IEA. Deutsche Bank and Citi, however, see OPEC coming under pressure in the coming years. Citi analysts see a substantial oil surplus in 2025 as production keeps growing in North America, Brazil and Guyana, while demand slows due to energy efficiency improvements and electric vehicle adoption.
