As many American companies struggle to navigate the world's second-largest economy, Meta Platforms has found itself raking in billions of dollars from China without the direct challenges of doing business there. The influx in spending from Chinese ecommerce advertisers has been a "significant positive" for Meta, said Rohit Kulkarni, analyst at Roth MKM covering internet companies. Many American companies doing business in China have battled similar challenges as the post-Covid recovery there has progressed slower than expected. Meta has said it has a "diverse advertiser base" of Chinese companies. The concern is that as more Chinese advertisers target American consumers through Meta's platforms, that could drive up the price of ads for everyone.

General Motors is buying back a ton of stock; Ford, so far, not so much. Before the buyback disclosure late this year, Ford had been down 10%, which was less than GM's 14% decline. In 2023, Ford spent $5.33 billion on dividends and stock repurchases, with only 6.3% of that total on buybacks. Constellation Brands stock is looking like it could be ready to break out, with its strong beer business well-positioned for market share gains in the upcoming fiscal year. Morgan Stanley anticipates Constellation to continue gaining market share at the expense of Bud Light during this period. Since Constellation tends to boast industry-leading results in its beer business, we're confident it will deliver strong numbers again next week. Over the past few years, Constellation has been trying to boost sales in its wine and spirits business — shifting from lower-priced brands to more premium names. While wine and spirits make up a small part of Constellation's overall business, Jim has said it must go.

While Microsoft Azure's reported 30% year-over-year revenue growth and Alphabet's Google Cloud posted 26% annual revenue growth during the same period, Amazon's results nevertheless indicated the softness in cloud spending is rolling over. Amazon said it expects accelerating AWS revenue trends to continue in 2024, which is good news for the stock. In a poll of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers about their expected spending, Amazon remains the preferred e-commerce destination "by a wide margin." Another encouraging finding in the Wedbush survey: Amazon Prime members said they are seeing "modest improvements" in their experiences, with 39% saying they received an order on the same or next day. Representative Anna Paulina Luna, a hard-right Republican from Florida, has proudly described herself as a “pro-life extremist.”“My husband is a byproduct of rape,” she told a conservative student group in 2022, explaining her support for abortion bans with no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. Now she and Representative María Elvira Salazar, another Republican whose Florida district is not solidly red, will have to defend their records of supporting anti-abortion measures at the national level, with control of the House at stake. The court’s ruling said that the six-week abortion ban could go into effect on May 1. But in a twist, it is also allowing a vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that would guarantee access to abortion “before viability,” around 24 weeks. The twin rulings have suddenly buoyed Democratic hopes of picking off House seats in a state that has long trended toward the right.
