On Wednesday, Rep. Jim Jordan failed to win the speaker's gavel for the second time. In a striking blow to his candidacy, even more House Republicans voted against him than last time. CNN —Rep. Jim Jordan’s speaker bid is in peril as the Ohio Republican confronts steep opposition from members of his own party, raising serious questions over whether he can flip enough holdouts to win the gavel. ET Wednesday in what could be a pivotal moment for Jordan’s candidacy that will show whether he is losing or gaining support. But it’s not clear if Jordan has a viable path forward in the race amid the deep divisions within the House GOP conference and the resistance he faces. Uncertainty over Jordan’s candidacy threatens to prolong the state of paralysis the House is currently stuck in. Scalise initially defeated Jordan inside the GOP conference to become the speaker nominee, but later dropped out of the race amid opposition to his candidacy.

Rep. Jim Jordan should get ready to move on, according to fellow Republican Chris Christie. "My own party looks childish," Christie said on "Squawk on the Street," regarding the disarray among House Republicans. Christie predicted that Jordan would fail to convert enough of the 20 House Republicans who voted against him in the first ballot Tuesday. Jordan in that initial vote won just 200 of the 217 votes he needed to become speaker. You know, we have Israel aid, Ukraine aid, aid to Taiwan, border security and a budget all to get done.

Jordan's bid to become speaker appeared to be in deep trouble Wednesday, after he failed to secure the gavel by a wider margin than expected in the Tuesday vote. On that ballot, 20 Republicans publicly voted against the Judiciary Committee chairman, and 200 voted for him. Jordan's second bid already appeared doom to fail early Wednesday afternoon with at least nine Republicans voting against him so far, more than the congressman can afford to lose. Other Republicans voted for Lee Zeldin, who left Congress in January. "By empowering Patrick McHenry as Speaker Pro Tempore we can take care of our ally Israel until a new Speaker is elected."

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan failed to win enough support on the first ballot, losing 20 Republicans. Jordan, who chairs the powerful House Judiciary Committee, received 200 votes on the first ballot with 20 Republicans voting for other candidates. With full Democratic attendance and united opposition, Jordan could only afford to have lost three Republican votes. By at least one measure, Jordan would be the most conservative Speaker compared to the average House Republican in recent years. The House of Representatives is set to vote on Jim Jordan's nomination for speaker on Tuesday afternoon, two weeks after the chamber ousted Kevin McCarthy from the top spot. Jordan was scrambling to shore up the votes needed to clinch the vote in the closely divided chamber. He can likely only lose a few GOP votes to win the nod. The House is scheduled to start voting at noon in what could become a showdown for the gavel. But with public pressure bearing down on lawmakers from Trump’s allies including conservative TV hosts, it’s unclear how long the holdouts can last.

After Republicans pulled the plug on a second speaker vote on Tuesday, Representative Hakeem Jeffries went out to the Capitol steps to castigate Republicans for their predicament. He urged them to work with Democrats to find a solution, though he was not specific what that might be. Mr. Jordan also was apparently rebuffed by Mr. Scalise when he asked for help in converting those still simmering over the treatment of the majority leader. The floor showdown also gave Republicans a taste of what they could expect from Democrats if they did end up going with Mr. Jordan. He served notice that every comment and position Mr. Jordan had made or taken would be hung around the neck of House Republicans who backed him — and 200 did so on Tuesday, even as he fell short.

The U.S. House of Representatives gaveled into session Tuesday to vote on whether Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, will become its next speaker. The vote on Jordan's candidacy is scheduled to begin around 12:30 p.m. The deeply divided Republican conference has so far been unable to coalesce around a candidate for speaker after McCarthy's ouster. Jordan has said he wants the House to keep voting Tuesday until it chooses a speaker, suggesting Jordan intends to wear down his opposition on the House floor. The House has been leaderless for two weeks after a faction of eight Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida ousted McCarthy in an unprecedented no-confidence vote.

CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting. Several Republicans – including from districts won by President Joe Biden – declined to say Monday evening whether they would vote for Jordan on the floor.

Rep. Jim Jordan received his party’s nomination for speaker on Friday, becoming the second nominee after Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly abandoned his bid for the role a day earlier. The Ohio Republican fell more than 60 votes short of the threshold needed to become speaker in a test vote on Friday. Jordan, the House Judiciary Committee chairman, was known for years as an outspoken critic of leadership positioned squarely among the party’s right flank. Still, some moderates, along with Democrats, staunchly oppose a Jordan speakership, making a bipartisan path forward possible. Some have floated a bipartisan effort to empower Rep. Patrick McHenry, who has been serving as speaker pro tempore since McCarthy’s ouster, or even elect the North Carolina Republican as speaker.

Rep. Jim Jordan is the new GOP speaker nominee following Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s exit from the race. Jordan has the weekend to continue to make his case and attempt to flip holdouts, but he faces a steep uphill battle. But it soon became clear that Jordan also faces a stiff wall of resistance. That vote, which was cast by secret ballot, was 152 to 55, laying bare the major challenge Jordan faces in his bid for the gavel. Jordan or any other Republican speaker candidate can only afford to lose four GOP votes when the full House votes for speaker if all members are voting.

But not all Republicans want to see Jordan as speaker, second in line to the presidency. Overwhelmed and exhausted, anxious GOP lawmakers worry their House majority is being frittered away to countless rounds of infighting over rules, personalities and direction of the GOP. Handfuls of Republicans announced they were sticking with Jordan, McCarthy or someone other than Scalise — including Trump. The position as House speaker does not need to go to a member of Congress. Exasperated Democrats, who have been waiting for the Republican majority to recover from McCarthy’s ouster, urged them to figure it out.

“We are in uncharted waters, but it’s also very clear that we do not want to have a speaker pro tem who is leading policy. “That's the goal,” McHenry said earlier Thursday when asked if he would put a vote for speaker on the House floor. House Republicans are gridlocked with no end in sight, a war is escalating in Israel and Palestine and the U.S. government is ticking closer to a shutdown. McHenry was named to the role of speaker pro tempore by McCarthy as part of a process established in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It's an argument that may catch on in the House as lawmakers grow restless with their inability to act.

As House Republicans struggle to govern, the party suffered another black eye Thursday evening when Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly withdrew from the speaker’s race amid hardened opposition from more than a dozen holdouts. Tensions are boiling over among House Republicans frustrated at the impasse and concerned over the path forward. The problem for me though is it’s not Jim’s fault so I’m just grappling with that,” he said. House Republicans control just a razor-thin majority and a speaker candidate can only afford to lose four defections and still win. But Jordan, like Scalise and McCarthy before him, faces an uphill battle to unify the conference. With a razor-thin GOP majority in the House, he’ll need the support of nearly every Republican to become speaker. Lawmakers instead were expected to head home for the weekend before returning for a speaker vote early next week. With Trump’s endorsement, some House Republicans coalesced around Jordan, while others touted him as a change to the status quo. Still, among many moderates, a Jordan speakership is unthinkable.

GOP lawmakers did select Steve Scalise as their nominee for the job that is second in the line of presidential succession on Wednesday. The worsening debacle in the House follows the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week by eight Republicans voting with Democrats. But some GOP leaders are irritated that the jockeying is distracting from the imperative to find a speaker. He was still well short of the 217 votes – a majority of the current House – needed to claim the speakership on the floor. “He has no path to 217,” one top House Republican said on condition of anonymity.

CNN —Rep. Steve Scalise announced he was dropping out of the speaker’s race Thursday after House Republicans failed to coalesce behind him in the aftermath of Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster. And Republicans scheduled a second members-only conference meeting for Thursday evening. But the opposition to Scalise as the next speaker only grew Thursday, with roughly 20 Republicans publicly opposing him. Scalise needs a majority of the House to be elected speaker, meaning he can only afford to lose four votes. The deadlock is leading to intensifying frustration as the House GOP looks no closer to coalescing around a speaker candidate.
