I'm a professional chef with experience picking the best cuts of meat for almost any steak dish. The filet mignon pairs well with many flavors, but it's imperative to not overcook this cut of meat. SKIP AHEAD Best products for snaking a drain | How to use a drain snake drain | How to unclog a drain without a snake | Meet our experts | Why trust NBC Select? While a drain snake is incredibly helpful in clearing up your sink or bathtub drain, it’s important to prevent hair and other particles from building up in the first place. A drain snake is effective at cleaning out a bathtub drain, but they could potentially damage pipes if used improperly. Instead, use an enzyme-based liquid cleaner if you prefer that over a drain snake. If you have to unclog your bathtub drain but don’t have a drain snake, you can try using an enzyme-based cleaner, such as the Mighty Mint Drain Maintainer with Enzymes, to clear out the pipes.

Gold prices drifted higher on Thursday, as safe-haven demand countered a firmer dollar, while palladium hit a more than one-month peak. Spot gold rose 0.3% to $2,725.51 per ounce by 0143 GMT. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for other currency holders. "The Fed's monetary easing cycle, stimulus measures in China, and supply constraints will continue to drive silver prices higher into 2025 where it could potentially scale higher levels of around $45," Sachdeva said.

That is the Boeing unit that has been the most troubled, but the strike affected only the last two weeks of the three-month period. Boeing reported a $2.4 billion operating loss in its space and defense business, which is not affected by the strike. “First and foremost on everybody’s mind today is ending the IAM strike,” Ortberg told investors. Members of the International Association of Machinists from Boeing hold a march during an ongoing strike in Seattle, on October 15. Fortunately for Boeing, it is not likely it will be forced out of business by its current financial crisis.

Global public debt will rise above $100 trillion by the end of 2024, the agency projected in its annual Fiscal Monitor report. By the end of the decade, the IMF forecasts global public debt will reach 100% of world GDP. The U.S. and China account for a significant share of rising public debt levels. If the two countries were excluded from calculations, the global public debt to GDP ratio would fall around 20%, the IMF said. Unsustainable debt levels place countries' markets at risk of a sudden sell-off if investors view a country's fiscal health as too poor.

New York CNN —The strike by 33,000 workers at Boeing will continue after rank-and-file union members rejected an offer from the company in a vote on Wednesday and decided to remain on the picket lines instead. The membership of the International Association of Machinists voted 64% against the deal, the union announced late Wednesday. “Our members deserve more,” said Jon Holden, the president of the largest IAM local at Boeing and its chief negotiator. The offer would have raised wages for IAM members at Boeing by 35 percentage points over the four-year life of the contract, with an immediate 12% raise. Loss of pension a ‘sticking point’Among the major issues for many members was the loss of a traditional pension plan.

CNN —Scientists have scoured the depths of the ocean and outer space for microbes to help slow global warming. “Unusual colors, smells, textures, and other data” can help scientists identify areas of interest, Tierney said. The World Economic Forum named microbial carbon capture as one of the world’s top emerging technologies in a June report, but the technology is still in its infancy, with companies running pilot-scale programs to test commercial viability. Carbon capture — which includes a range of technology from huge vacuum-type facilities able to suck climate pollution from the air to carbon-absorbing sponges — remains controversial as a climate solution. “That’s why these technologies make sense in places where such energy is available in a sustainable manner.”The potential uses of extremophile microbes in biotech extend beyond carbon capture, according to Tierney.

Coca-Cola on Wednesday reported quarterly earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations, thanks to a boost from higher prices that offset sluggish demand. Unit case volume fell 1% in the quarter, driven by weakening demand in some international markets. Consumer companies, including Coke, have reported in recent months that customers are more price sensitive, leading to sluggish demand for its products as prices remain high. Pepsi said volume for its North American beverage business fell 3% in its third quarter, fueled by weakening demand for energy drinks. Coke is projecting a low-single-digit headwind for comparable revenue and a mid-single-digit headwind for earnings per share.

HSBC (HSBC) did not say what the projected cost savings might be or indicate how many jobs would be affected, but more details could emerge when the bank reports third-quarter results on October 29. Ever since 2022, when inflation hit a 40-year high of 9%, Americans have been pissed off about the economy. Traditionally, economists (being economists) have focused on the economic costs of inflation — i.e., are price increases wiping out everyone's annual raise? In a normal economy, the small raises companies give are enough to offset the minimal inflation we typically see. In a survey of 3,000 workers, researchers found that most — a whopping 79% — just accepted the salary they were offered. AdvertisementBut now, poring over the new study, I realize I overlooked the role inflation has played in reshaping the pandemic-era workplace.

Bonds have sold off as traders reassess the path of Fed Reserve rate cuts. AdvertisementThe bond market is in sell-off mode as traders reassess the path of interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve. That would be a big surprise to traders, with the market pricing in a 90% chance of a 25-basis point interest rate cut from the Fed next month. AdvertisementFed officials, for their part, have indicated they're likely to move cautiously, though more rate cuts are still their base case. Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said she expects interest rates will fall "gradually," and Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid endorsed a "cautious and gradual" approach to cutting interest rates.

American consumers and businesses are having a hard time paying off credit card, auto, and commercial real estate debt. Bank CEOs said on recent earnings calls that elevated prices and interest rates continue to weigh on Americans. According to Federal Reserve data, the past-due debt share for credit card, auto, and commercial real estate has recently risen to above pre-pandemic levels. That's because some loans are coming due — forcing businesses to refinance at much higher interest rates. The financial roller coaster of pandemic payments, whipsawing inflation, and high interest rates are especially affecting lower-income Americans.

Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning for president against Elon Musk at least as much as she is against former President Donald Trump, Mark Cuban said Monday, as he advocated for the Democratic nominee as the pro-business choice. "It's the Harris campaign versus Elon, not even versus Trump," the billionaire investor and former "Shark Tank" host said on CNBC's "Squawk Box." Cuban's remarks were the latest volley between the two billionaires, who have taken on increasingly prominent campaign roles while ramping up attacks against each other. Asked for his view on the latest polls, which broadly show a neck-and-neck race between Harris and Trump, Cuban said, "Nobody really knows, and so really it comes down to get out the vote." "And the crazy thing is, it's the Harris campaign versus Elon, not even versus Trump," said Cuban.

S & P 500 money is oblivious to stock valuations of any kind and ignorant to upgrades and downgrades. The Lilliputian sellers regularly fail to do damage when matched with the oblivious index money. A 4% 2-year note isn't competitive to the magnet of the S & P 500 and its kin. That's emblematic of what happens with a big buyback without stock-based compensation (something many tech firms use that renders moot the S & P 500 inflows). Because of the way that the S & P 500 money is divvied up, the share base becomes overwhelmingly index-fund based and the index fund shareholders do not sell.

It found that standing for more than two hours a day may increase the risk of circulation issues. AdvertisementA few months into the pandemic, my husband bought us a convertible standing desk. We made small talk about how our new standing desks helped with our posture and prevented us from sitting all day. While some of my colleagues felt more energized standing at their desks for three hours, I did not. Ultimately, it suggests that if you're using a standing desk to feel more active and boost your health, the trick is to actually use it to move more, frequently standing and sitting.

Howard Schnapp | Newsday | Getty ImagesThe tide could be turning for commercial real estate. That could give interest rate-sensitive sectors such as commercial real estate long-awaited positive momentum. While lower rates are not a "magic bullet," the easing of the Fed's monetary policy "lays the groundwork for a commercial real estate recovery," analysts wrote in a follow-up report in late September. More than $40 billion in transactions occurred during the second quarter, a 13.9% jump quarter over quarter, but still 9.4% lower year over year, according to real estate data intelligence firm Altus Group. While these dynamics could set the stage for a broader recovery, with some major subsectors such as commercial retail real estate picking up in tandem, the path forward will likely be uneven.

But there's another risk financial advisors are focused on — public debt, according to a new survey from Natixis Investment Managers. The term public debt is used interchangeably by the U.S. Treasury with national debt and federal debt. Experts say there are certain moves individual investors can make to limit the financial exposure they have to those broader risks. For investors who worry the country's debt may lead to slow growth, it can help to add international exposure to a portfolio, Cheng said.
